My dear brothers and sisters
in Christ, tonight as we gather
for this Parish Day, occasion
what we are celebrating is
togetherness of our Parish.
However, Togetherness
especially in a big family or big
parish like St. Joseph Lweza
is not easy to come by unless
guided by the Holy Spirit.
We thank God for that who
has kept us together. We have
to work hard to initiate, to build
and nurture this. Being mindful
of this Parish feast celebration is
inevitably theemed as working
towards ONENESS in heart and
spirit for the Parish. St John
ch.17:20-22 mentioned about
Oneness in the Church that they
all may be one, as You, Father,
are in me, and I in You and that
they may be one just as We are
one.
Today, I have one simple
critical message for us all
as a Parish. IT IS THIS
-Togetherness will breed Unity
because Unity is strength for
United we stand, divided we fall.
St. Paul in his letter to the
Ephesians said, the church is
one body, one Spirit, one hope,
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.
Ephesians 4:4-6.
The nature of Parish unity
is just like the human body
which is first, an organic unity.
It consists of many parts:
toes, fingers, hands, feet, legs,
eyes, ears, etc. But it is not a
collection of parts put together
as in an automobile or as in a
house. It begins from one cell
which begins to develop and to
grow and shoots off little buds
that eventually make up the
variegated parts. This is an
organic and a living unity by
creation. So is the Parish and
the Church, spiritually speaking.
To actualize this we have
engaged and involved many
in the planning, organizing,
coordinating and collaboration
for the parish feast celebration.
As Chairman organizing
committee I wish to thank
all who participated in
organizing this day, Our

Celebrating 50 years of Gods
Faithfulness in Kampala Archdiocese
Kampala Archdiocese Theme:
Remember, Rejoice, Renew
Remember, rejoice and renew
your faith, love and hope in the
living God!
As the Archdiocese celebrates
50 years, there is so much to
remember, so many reasons to
rejoice and celebrate as well as
reasons to ask for forgiveness
because at times we have not
been faithful servants to the
mission of Christ.
It is in those areas where we
have been weak and fallen short
that we need to pick ourselves
up and renew our complete
resolve and focus on Christ and
our diocese.
In the book of Leviticus (25:1-
55) explains the jubilee year. It
emphasizes several things: The
sacredness of the year; Liberty;
return to ones property, (cf.,
Lev. 25:10).we, too, in the Arch-
diocese of Kampala want to take
time, to remember what God has
done for us during the past 50
years; celebrate and rejoice in
the kindness and mercy he has
shown us; and lastly sharpen the
saw by renewing and seriously
taking up again what was our
own that we have lost over the
50 years of our existence.
The Jubilee Year calls for
special behavior, it is a year
to stop the usual labour, alter
the daily routines and renew
ourselves. The Jubilee year, as
Leviticus 25 puts it, is a time
to: rest the land and lives(v.5);
give the people an opportunity
for redemption (vs. 10,24); give
people time for reflection (v. 12),
for it is a holy time and a gift
from the Lord. The Jubilee year
is time to reward people for their
obedience a time for reward

and repair (vs. 18-19); a time for
relationship (vs.35-46); a time to
prioritize people over material
gain. It is a time to refocus
(v.55) on our values and age-old
practices; where God reminds us
we are His servants and He is
our Lord.
The Archdiocese of Kampala
has grown in many aspects of
her life, the number of believers
increases every year so does the
number of vocations to priestly,
family and religious life.
Remember
Since the founding of Kampala
Archdiocese there are some very
important events, circumstances
and realities that we need to
remember and never let go out
our memory. These include
the erection of the Archdiocese
of Kampala and the legacy of
Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga
the founding archbishop of the
Archdiocese, a visionary (started
many projects), hardworking
and with an evangelization
mission (opened many parishes),
he was strong and firm and
gave pride to Africans that they
can also lead well; the legacy of
Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala
a humble and hardworking
servant.
Rejoice
We have reason to rejoice,
during the 50 years, many
positive things have happened
in the Arch-diocese for which we
thank the Almighty God for his
goodness to us. These include
the three Papal visits to Uganda.
Renewal
We need to renew ourselves
so that we may be full of faith,
hope and love (I Cor. 13:13).
Jesus Christ our savior has a
triple Ministry deriving from
his identity as the son of God:
Priest, Prophet and Leader.
The three Muneri Christi ate
to: sanctify, teach and lead.
So the areas of renewal must
necessarily follow these three.

 What Every Catholic Needs To Know About
Putting God First
Ten steps to making
God our first and most
important priority

The first step toward a more mature and
living faith is the desire and willingness to
put God first in our lives. It seems so simple,
and yet most of us realize this is a challenge
of Christian living in todays world. Some
might say it is the challenge.
Ordering our lives to make God our first
and most important priority is for many of us
a consistent element in need of attention. An
Internet search illustrates the immensity of
this challenge.
Type put God first in your search engine,
and 26.4 million responses appear. We are
not alone, and we need help!
Go to any bookstore and you will find a
large section of books labeled Self-Help.
Many such books have been written by
professionals whose experience leads them
to believe they have beneficial insights for
those whose lives need change or whose life
skills need development or improvement.
In another section of the bookstore,
we find collections of quotations or brief
statements of direction or guidance. Some
are lengthy; others are little more than one-
liners. One particular genre of such books
are labeled Little Instruction books and are
intended to give the reader quick thought-
bites, small statements of instruction for
those in a particular stage or situation in life.
What about we who hope to put God first
in our lives? Where do we go for challenge
and inspiration? Where might we find a little
instruction for making God our first priority?
The answer seems simple enough: the
Bible, the collective wisdom of the Tradition
of the Church, the experience and witness of
the saints who have gone before us these
hold the insight we need in order to learn
the steps for making God the center of our
lives.
But the Bible is no Little Instruction book,
nor is the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
nor any collection of the lives of the saints.
So, from whom or from what do we learn
the steps to take to keep God our highest
priority?
Where will we find direction, and,
importantly, how might we take what we
find there and apply it to our lives today?
Learning from Jesus
While there are no doubt thousands of
applicable quotations from a variety of
sources, let us begin with our Lord and
Master. What steps does Jesus teach us in
order to put God first in our lives?
In a telling passage in the Gospel of Mark,
we learn from an encounter between Jesus
and a scribe.
Jesus is asked, Which is the first of all the
commandments? Jesus replied, The first
is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is
Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, with all
your mind, and with all your strength. The
second is this: You shall love your neighbor
as yourself. There is no other commandment
greater than these.
The scribe recognizes the truth in Jesus
reply, and we are told, And when Jesus saw
that [he] answered with understanding,
he said to him, You are not far from the
kingdom of God (Mk 12:28-34).
Guiding Passage
Sacred Scripture is filled with insightful
guidance for our living, but one section is
particularly enlightening as a plan for the
Christian life: Matthew 5:1-7:29, in which we
learn from Jesus Sermon on the Mount.
Instruction No. 1: Begin With A
Reality Check
Any time we find ourselves drifting from
our commitment to put God first, we must
search our hearts to rediscover the reality of
Gods love for us and to find again our real
and true love for God. Sometimes we say we

want to give our lives to Our Lord, yet we
do little more than go through the motions.
When our commitment comes from a real
desire to love God, in response to the great
love of God for us, keeping first things first
becomes not only possible but desirable.
Where is your relationship with God at
this time in your life? How will you take a
step toward a deeper relationship with God,
knowing that Our Lord is always ready to
embrace your heart with love?
Instruction No. 2: Pay Attention:
Recognizing Gods love for us and
deepening our response to that love is the
work of our lifetime. Notice Jesus use of the
foundational Shema prayer in response to
the scribes question. That prayer guides the
Jewish people, and us, to nurture a total and
all-encompassing love for God with all
our heart, soul, mind and strength. Such love
requires attention to the One who is loved;
such love cannot be ignored!
Being completely truthful to yourself,
how much attention do you give God? How
might you take a step toward increasing
your attention to God each day?
Instruction No. 3: Give Out of
Love
Jesus one commandment is twofold;
love God, love neighbor. Because the scribe
acknowledges Jesus answer, we are told that
he is not far from Gods reign. Are we? Jesus
links love of God with love of neighbor, yet
often we try to keep our love for God in a
neat and tidy place that seems to have little
bearing on our actions.

Catholic Parish
Lweza Parish has year after
year been engaged in the
implementation of at least one
major project and a number of
minor projects.
For example, we had the
Parish office project, which was
completed, then we started the
Parish boundary wall project
which is about to get finished -
we have a few areas to build.
We also need gates to the
main entrance and to the
football playing field.
Whereas those were major
projects, during the same period
minor projects like the grotto,
the Parish Public address
system and the Generator were
also implemented.
We profoundly thank you for
your unwavering support.

Short and long term

We have many projects in the

offing which require colossal
amounts of money to implement
both long and short term.
In the long term we hope that
the Parish will develop a guest
house and a Parish hall among
others.
In the short term we have the
Fathers residence, the main
road to the parish and the repair
of the football playing field just
to mention a few. Some of these
projects will provide financial
sustainability of the Parish.
This Year we embark on the
fathers residence project among
other highly needed projects,
like the main road to the
parish and I feel that I owe an
explanation to the parishioners
for undertaking the chosen
project.
In 2015, we had a fund-
raising where the president
contributed Shs. 60M towards
the construction of the fathers
residence.
This project did not take
off then due to the process of
getting the necessary documents
(architectural and structural
drawings) and approvals at the
diocese and the local government
level.
Having completed that process
and considering that funds
donated by the President ought
to be accounted for but also
considering that money has
stayed for somehow a long time
on an account and is likely
to lose value, the executive
committee with the Parish
priest decided to embark on the
Fathers residence project. It is
also true that the Parish can
only embark on one project at a
time.
The estimated and aggregated
cost for the project are given
above (the details are available
in case they are required)
We appeal for your usual
support both financial and
advice not only for this project
but even the others.
We are aware that this is a
blessed Parish with a myriad of
professions and acquaintances.
Reach out to your acquaintances
for support that is why in
a special way we thank the
parishioner who spearheaded
the presidential visit which bore
so much support.
We encourage and implore you
to regularly visit the ongoing
project to monitor progress and
offer advice.
We need two gates to enclose
the Parish, which is the only
way we will protect the property
of the Parish and that of those
who stay and work at the
Parish.
We also need support to repair
the football playing field so
that is can become an income
generating asset of the Parish.

 Pope Francis : The Cross is
not a badge of belonging

The Popes words came during
morning Mass at the Casa Santa
Marta.
Three times, Pope Francis
said, in todays liturgical reading
Jesus says to the Pharisees:
You will die in your sins.
Thats because their hearts
were closed and they did not
understand the mystery of the
Lord. To die in your sins he
said, is a bad thing.
Reflecting on the First Reading
in which the Lord tells Moses
to make a saraph serpent and
mount it on a pole and whoever
looks at it after being bitten will
live, the Pope said the serpent
is the symbol of the devil, the
father of lies, he who caused
humanity to sin.
And he recalled that Jesus said
When you lift up the Son of
Man, then you will realize that I
AM, and that I do nothing on my
own. This, Francis said, is the
mystery of the Cross.
The bronze serpent was the
sign of two things: the sign of
sin and of the seductive power
of sin, and it was a prophecy of
the Cross, he said.
The Cross, he continued, is not
only a symbol of belonging, but
it is the memory of God who was
made sin for love. As Saint Paul
says: For our sake he made him
to be sin who did not know sin.
Taking upon Himself all the
filth of humanity, the Pope said,
He was lifted so that all men
wounded by sin would be able to
see Him.
Salvation comes only from the
Cross, from this Cross that is
God made flesh he said.
And he pointed out: There
is no salvation in ideas, there
is no salvation in good will, in
the desire to be good ... The
only salvation is in the crucified
Christ, because like the bronze
serpent, He was able to take all
the poison of sin and heal us.
Then the Pope asked: what is

the Cross for you? Yes, it is the
Christian symbol. We make the
sign of the Cross, but often we
do not do it well
For some, he said, the Cross
is like a badge of belonging,
they wear it to show they are
Christians, or even in search
of visibility, they wear it as
an ornament decorated with
precious gems.
But, he reminded the faithful:
God said to Moses whoever
looks at the serpent will live;
and Jesus said to his enemies
When you lift up the Son of
Man, then you will realize that I
am the son of God.
He who does not look to the
Cross with faith, the Pope said,
will die in his sins, will not
receive salvation.
Today, Pope Francis said, the
Church proposes a dialogue
with the Mystery of the Cross,
with God who became sin for our
sake.
Each of us can say He became
sin for love of me he said.
Inviting all faithful to think
about how they wear the Cross,
and how aware they are when
making the sign of the cross,
the Pope concluded asking each
of us to look to this God who
became sin so that we do not die
in our sins, and to reflect on the
questions just suggested.
Do we understand what we
wear and why we wear/use these
sacred/holy objects? (this part is
added)
Sacred objects, not only
symbolize our faith; they also
ignite it. While physically visual,
audible and tangible, they are
spiritually dynamic as well.
Prayers, blessings and objects
help us to see, hear, smell, taste
and feel Gods work in our lives,
not simply by reminding us of
Him but by actually grazing us
with His touch.
When we pray with a blessed
rosary before assisting at the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or
cross ourselves using holy water
before entering the confessional,
we may not be armed with magic
amulets, but we are armed
in a different kind. Sacred
Objects open a door and invite
Gods grace to come in. If their
use disposes us to receive the
Eucharist with deeper reverence
or to confess our sins with
greater contrition, that is a very
real power.
Grace before a meal is one
example of a simple lay
blessing. By asking God to bless
our food, we elevate the mere
intake of calories to something
more momentous: a meal
becomes an opportunity to praise
God, to ask for His grace, and to
thank Him for His providential
care.
It is through simple actions,
then saying grace before a
meal, clutching a rosary in
time of despair that various
occasions in life are rendered
holy (CCC, no. 1667). This is
not because we have faith in
some magical power of food,
water or beads in themselves,
but because we have faith in the
One who gives us such good gifts
in answer to the prayer of the
Church.
Therefore the pope wants us
to give due context to the use of
sacred objects and symbols. One
should not expect that by simply
putting on the scapular then
everything is done. The scapular
should draw us to a more
profound intimacy with God.

- St Angella Bugema aims for the sky

St Angela Bugema Catholic
Sub-Parish is composed of six
basic Christian Communities (6
Bubondos). These include; St
Angela, St Pope John Paul 11,
St Balikudembe, St
Muggaga, St Jude
and Kissa Kyamaria.
The sub- Parish
started on 13th
March 1985 after it
was curved out off
St Peter and Paul
Katale Busawula
sub-parish. The sub-
parish began under a
tree in the compound
of late Zaverio Kagwa
and Mrs. Benadin
Kagwa .
On 17th March
1985, just after four
days a leadership
to lead the sub-
parish was elected.
It should be noted that the first
Ssabkristu of the sub-Parish
was Mrs. Benadin Kagwa very
elderly and unable to be with us.
The first Catechist was the late
Zaverio Kagwa(RIP). We thank
them for the great work they did
during that time as a Ssabkristu
and Catechist.
On 2nd December 1990 the
2nd leadership was elected.
On 13th December 1990, the
then Ssabakristu Mr. Vincent
Katabazi brought the first
proposal to have the first mass
in our sub-parish. The issue was
discussed and members agreed
to have the first mass. On 13th
/01/1991, the Parish priest
accepted to have the first mass
which was scheduled on 27th
/ 01/ 1991 at 10:00am under
the tree in the Compound of
late Zaverio Kagwa. On 14th
/01/ 1991, the sub- parish choir
of Bugama started to prepare Saint (St. Angela) donated a

planned how to raise funds under
the leadership of Ssabkristu Mrs.
Annet Nakanyike and Musomesa
Mr Faustino Mbwanika. The two
are present here with us. On 18th
01. 2003, a new foundation for a
church was excavated above the
Karipuso but this land was later
taken by the Landlords when
they were demarcating the plots
for sale and project stalled.
With my family we joined
this sub-parish on Sunday
13th August 2006. Mrs Alvera
Kamwesiga together with the
then Ssabakristu Omukadde
Annet Nakanyike moved house to
house mobilizing the Christians
who had lost energy. These two
people did a wonderful revival
work of the sub parish. Masses
were arranged into peoples home
and the catholic faith in Bugema
regained momentum as it was
a new beginning that ushered
the developments you see today.
And later I was chosen to lead
the development committee for
construction of the new church.
On 4th March 2007, we took the
measurements of the new church
Nabwegamo and excavated the
foundation with combined efforts
of all the sub-parishioners. After
observing that the land at which
we were building was small, In
July 2007,
I with my wife Alvera
Kamwesiga we visited our
neighbor Mr. Joseph Yiga
Magandazi, the Proprietor of
JOMAYI and fronted proposal
with a request for land donation
to the church. He first gave us
land in Nalumunye Estate where
St. Josephat stands today but the
area was under the Jurisdiction of
Busega Parish yet we are under
Lweza Parish but he later gave
two plots of this land where we
stand now.
On 13th. 01. 2008, His Grace
Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, our
Archbishop laid the foundation
stone of the new church of
Bugema. On 7th July 2008, I
was chosen as a Ssabkristu. The

FEAR: The enemy of Christians

Every Christian needs the power
of God to do his/her purpose
on earth. The Holy Spirit is
the source of this power and
works in us when we call upon
his help. However, there is an
enemy of this power called Fear;
the weapon the evil one uses to
destroy all that is good in us as
Christians.
You want to be a great child of
God fight the fear in you caused
by the evil one.
Fear is the source of sin in
our lives. There is no sin in
the church not caused by fear.
Without fear we are certain of
heaven. We need to work hard
to fight this enemy by saying
No to fear every time we feel it
approaching us.
See what fear can do.
l Many people who fear
poverty have ended up breaking
into peoples homes and
businesses to steal, and in the
process of fearing to be known
they kill innocent people.
l Students in school who fear
failing exams end up copying
and in the process when they
are caught, through fear of
disqualification they end up
bribing invigilators.
l Wives fear their husbands
to stray and join witchcraft, and
in the process the witch doctors
after doing harm on the husband
end up using them sexually
fearing the husband to know her
mess. This puts her in bondage.
l Daughters engaging in
fornication and eventually get
pregnant; the parents decide to
help her abort in fear for shame
upon the entire family. Again
they commit murder.
The list is so long just thinks
about every sin in the church,
you will see the power of fear
behind it and how much you
need to fight this enemy.
What a joy to live a life that is
fearless!
Nothing shakes you; you have
no fear of death, of tomorrow,
of hunger, of sickness, of being
hurt, of ending up alone or
loneliness, of not being accepted.
Not even fear of yourself.
You sail through life with
indescribable joy; even in the
times of uncertainty trusting
God above all.
God is calling me and you to
live a life free of fear. Fear that
controls us and keeps us in
bondage, prevents us from living
life to the fullest. John 10:10.
Fear is the barrier between us
and our God.
As we know God has no
relationship with sin. The
reason his son was forsaken on
the cross.
Let everybody reading this
article say: The lord is my light
and my salvation whom shall I
fear? Psalms 27:1

Jesus knows that when we love God,
that love will be spilled out for others. The
scribe who is not far from the kingdom
of God understood this. Sometimes we
need to recognize that we are blessed
with talents and gifts that are meant to
be shared. Disciples give of themselves in
meaningful ways for others, especially the
poor, lonely, imprisoned, sick and weak,
by using their talents as reflections of
Gods grace in their lives. This call to being
poured out in service helps us to prioritize
our lives in gratitude for the talents, time
and resources we have been given, and for
the grace of God which propels us toward
others.
How will you take a step toward
identifying and offering your talents in
service, out of love for God and others?
Instruction No. 4: Pray
It is not surprising to think of prayer as an
important step on the path to put God first
in our lives. Prayer is the way to place God
in the center of our lives, knowing that God
is there first! Your Father knows what you
need before you ask him, Jesus tells us,
and then we are taught the Lords Prayer
(see Mt 6:8-13). By ordering our day around
prayer, our days take on a more ordered
tone. We are able to clearly keep the
challenges, activities and responsibilities
of life in perspective, and realize again and
again that God is both the path and the
destination of our walk, step by step.
In bringing us to the reality of our life,
prayer also introduces us to the reality of
Gods life. We are put in touch with the
persons of the Holy Trinity, not through
words but at a deeper level. We feel that
we are from the Father and that our whole
life is a journey toward God. We discover
a sense of solidarity with the Word, in
our being bonded with the person of
Jesus and in our union with all the saints,
Abbot Michael Casey writes in Toward
God (Triumph, $12.99). We experience
the presence of the Holy Spirit, inciting
us to good, turning our thoughts to God,
directing our actions, supplying for our
weakness and, like a homing beacon for an
incoming plane, guiding our steps toward
the very heart of God.
How might you take a step toward
beginning or deepening prayer as the
cornerstone of your days activities?

Attention, Activity

What Every Catholic Needs to
into a rush of activities or a blur of details,
losing sight of Gods path in the process?
Jesus reminds us, Do not store up for
yourselves treasures on earth, where moth
and decay destroy, and thieves break in
and steal. But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroy,
nor thieves break in and steal. For where
your treasure is, there your heart will be
(Mt 6:19-21). Some of the steps on the
path of faith and discipleship necessitate a
step back in order to reflect and to regain
a vision of that which is most important,
so that we may focus our time, attention
and activity with the goal of Gods way
as our way. When we recall what is most
important, we treasure the moments along
the journey and our steps become surer
and stronger.
In Go and Make Disciples, their pastoral
letter on evangelization, the U.S. bishops
wrote: The Gospel speaks across time
and space to each human being, each
mind, each heart. It asks us what we think
about our lives, how we hope, whom we
love, and what we live for. If faith is not
transforming each heart and life, it is dead
(No. 16).
Take a step back and reflect: How is your
faith transforming your heart and life?
Or drawing on Jesus words, what do you
treasure, and how does what you treasure
point to what is deep within your heart?
Instruction No. 6: Keep money in
its place
This one is really rather straight-forward.
No one can serve two masters. He will
either hate one and love the other, or be
devoted to one and despise the other. You
cannot serve God and mammon [money].
Jesus does not tell us that money is evil,
but rather directs us to keep money in its
place as a resource for our living, and a
blessing to be shared with those who are
in need.
How might you take a step to be a good
steward of your resources for the sake of
others, in Christs name?
Instruction No. 7: Decisions are
steps
Enter through the narrow gate; for
the gate is wide and the road broad that
leads to destruction, and those who enter
through it are many. How narrow the gate
and constricted the road that leads to life.
And those who find it are few (Mt 7:13-14).
The decisions we make each day are the
steps that either lead toward a life centered
on God, or on a life that has as its center
things that are not of God. Some decisions
are clear-cut: Sunday Mass; beginning each
day with prayer; cherishing family, friends
and your faith community; serving those
in need as a reflection of Gods love in the
world.
Other decisions need the focus and
direction of Church teaching, often
through the personal guidance of the
pastor or a knowledgeable staff member
or teacher. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church illustrates the importance of
conscience formation in walking the
narrow path to which Jesus refers: In the
formation of conscience the Word of God is
the light for our path; we must assimilate it
in faith and prayer and put it into practice.
We must also examine our conscience
before the Lords Cross. We are assisted by
the gifts of the Holy Spirit, aided by the
witness or advice of others and guided by
the authoritative teaching of the Church
(No. 1785).
The steps that lead us toward God are
not always easy ones, as Jesus indicates in
the passage above, but we are certain that
Our Lord walks with us throughout the
journey.
What steps on the narrow road do you
find yourself needing to take? In what
ways are you tempted to take the easy way
instead? How will you take a step in which
you put God and Gods ways first?
Instruction No. 8: Trust in God
Ultimately, the steps on the path of
faith and discipleship require us to make
a decision: Do we trust in God or in the
things of this world? It is not that the world
is bad; Jesus came to redeem this world,
and to restore our path toward God, but
we do seem to have a great tendency to
become consumed by worry and attention
toward the passing things of this world
rather than on putting God first in our
lives. Jesus knows this, and offers this
instruction: Therefore I tell you, do not
worry about your life, what you will eat
(or drink), or about your body, what you
will wear. Is not life more than food and
the body more than clothing? Look at the
birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap,
they gather nothing into barns, yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you
more important than they? Can any of you
by worrying add a single moment to your
life-span? So do not worry and say, What
are we to eat? or What are we to drink? or
What are we to wear? All these things the
pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows
that you need them all. But seek first the
kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you
besides. Do not worry about tomorrow;
tomorrow will take care of itself (Mt 6:25-
27,31-34).
How will you take a step to be reasonable
in your acquisition of material goods? How
will you trust in Gods love, even when life
seems uncertain?
Instruction No. 9; Eucharist and
Reconciliation
Know about putting God first
For I received from the Lord what I also
handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on
the night he was handed over, took bread,
and, after he had given thanks, broke it and
said, This is my body that is for you. Do this
in remembrance of me. In the same way also
the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the
new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often
as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as
often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the death of the Lord until he
comes (1 Cor 11:23-26). What better way to
really put God first than to remain in Christ
through regular and active participation
in the Eucharist and in the Sacrament of
Penance? While we might sometimes think
to ourselves, How do I put God first whom
I cannot see or hear, when there is so much
around me that cries out for my attention
that I can see and hear? Yet when we take
just a few moments to reflect on it, we realize
we can see and hear Gods presence and
voice with clarity every time we participation
in the Mass and in reconciliation.
We also remember that the sacraments
celebrate our communion with Christ and
with each other. As members of Christs
body, we bear responsibility for drawing
others to Our Lord, to evangelize.
Pope John Paul II, in his apostolic letter
Novo Millennio Ineunte, said this: To make
the Church the home and the school of
communion: that is the great challenge
facing us in the millennium which is now
beginning, if we wish to be faithful to Gods
plan and respond to the worlds deepest
yearnings. A spirituality of communion
indicates above all the hearts contemplation
of the mystery of the Trinity dwelling in
us, and whose light we must also be able
to see shining on the face of the brothers
and sisters around us. A spirituality of
communion also means an ability to think
of our brothers and sisters in faith within the
profound unity of the Mystical Body, and
therefore as those who are a part of me.
This makes us able to share their joys and
sufferings, to sense their desires and attend
to their needs, to offer them deep and
genuine friendship (No. 43).
There is much in our society that tries to
convince us that we do not need community
in our lives. Yet we know that the Christian
life is lived within the community of faith.
Community places demands upon us, and
we might prefer to be singularly focused on
our lives as individuals or within our family
at home. Yet we also recognize that being a
lone ranger is not the Christian way. Being
a part of a community that knows each other
as those who are a part of me will give us
the support, the call to be accountable and
the sense of belonging that we need in order
to prioritize our lives with God at the center.
How will you take a step toward more
authentic participation in Mass, in the life of
your parish, in the Sacrament of Penance?
How might you draw others to Christ
through the body of Christ, the Church?

saints

We recognize the saints as people who
kept God first in their lives, often in the midst
of the threat of bodily torture, imprisonment,
persecution and trials beyond what most of
us can imagine. We know that their resolve
was not always without struggle. Still they
found the grace to put God at the center
of their lives and to order their thoughts,
actions, decisions and relationships
accordingly. As St. Teresa of vila prayed, Let
us make our way together, Lord; wherever
you go I must go: and through whatever
you pass, there too I will pass (The Way of
Perfection, No. 26).
The saints who have gone before us lived
as those whom Jesus describes as blessed
in his Sermon on the Mount. They met the
very real and challenging demands of life
by placing their trust in God, and keeping
God first before all else. They, like the scribe
whom Jesus encountered, understood and
embraced Jesus path and found themselves
not far from the kingdom of God in this
life, and we believe they now enjoy Gods
presence for eternity.
How will you take a step toward putting
God first in your life? Who stands as a model
and inspiration for you? Who intercedes
for you, asking the Lord to fill you with the
wisdom and courage needed in order to
grow in holiness?
