broughthimtothebadmintonhall.Attractingtheattentionofalocal
coach,thecoachaskedLee'sfatherifhecouldtakehimasa
student.Afterreceivinghisfather'sconsent,thecoachbeganto
trainLeeafterschool.[6]DiscoveredbyMisbunSidek,hewas
draftedintothenationalsquadwhenhewasseventeenyears

LeereceivedRM300,000on21August2008,asarewardforhis
silvermedaleffortinthe2008OlympicGames.Also,hereceived
RM3,000amonthasalifetimepensionbeginninginAugust
2008.[8]Forthesameachievement,hewasconferredwithaDarjah
SetiaPangkuanNegeri(DSPN),whichcarriedthetitleDato'by
GovernorofPenang,TunAbdulRahmanAbbason30August

On6June2009,LeereceivedtheDarjahBakti(DB)award,
fromTuankuMizanZainalAbidin,inconjunctionwiththeBirthday
ofSeriPadukaBagindaYangdiPertuanAgong,forhis
achievementsinthe2008Olympics.[11]Hewasinarelationship
withWongMewChoo,histeammate.In2009,LeeandWong
announcedtheyarenolongertogetherduringthe2009World
ChampionshipsinHyderabad,India.However,Leeannouncedhis
reconciliationwithMewChooafterwinningasilvermedalin2012
SummerOlympics.[12]Theyweremarriedon9November
2012,[13]andhadtwochildren,KingstonandTerrance,whichwere

promotedtotherankofhonoraryCommanderoftheRoyal
MalaysianNavyVolunteerReserveUnitinrecognitionofhis
successattheRiodeJaneiroOlympics.[20]On15October2016,
LeewasmadearecipientofDarjahCemerlangSeriMelaka
(DCSM)carryingthetitleof"DatukWira"fromMalacca
GovernorMohdKhalilYaakob.
