Competency Reflection

Throughout this past year as I completed my internship I was able to become more
familiar with the competencies that are expected out of a principal or a staff in a leadership role.
The first semester allowed me time to work in all competency areas while the second semester
allowed me time to focus on the areas that I was not comfortable with or needed more experience
in. Overall, the internship portion of the program gave me great insight into all competencies and
Through the internship, the competencies that I feel I still need to improve on are
competency 004 and competency 006. Competency 004, covers how the principal knows how to
facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching
and learning. I feel that I struggle in this area because I am still not fully involved in the general
curriculum so there are items that I am still not familiar with. I teach my students a different
curriculum and we completed different assessments. I do collaborate with the general ed when it
involves discussing tutorials because I assist them with reading. I would like to have been more
involved and I have hopes that next year regardless of what I teach, I can be engaged in more of
the general curriculum areas. In competency 006, it covered how the principal implements staff
evaluation and development systems to improve performance of staff. For this competency, I feel
that though I completed professional development, I did not attend as many as I would have
liked. I did have the opportunity to meet other campuses with questions and concerns for my
field and relations to my classroom. I would like to improve that and meet with the general ed
and attend some of their trainings and meeting to enhance my understanding of all grades and
subjects.
The competencies that I feel I am strong in are competency 002 and 007. Competency
002, covers how the principal communicates and collaborates with all members of the school

community. I am strong in this area because I communicate with my students parents daily. I
communicate with them about the progress of their child, concerns they may have, or plans that
they wish their child to be when they leave my classroom. I feel the teaching assistants and I
collaborate very well. Every day we discuss how the day went with our students, what changes
we should make, and generally just how we each are doing. I feel this competency is important
collaboration and communication does not stop in my classroom, these skills I use with the
general teachers as well. Our collaboration entails when we are discussing ideas for improving
their testing scores and how tutorials could assist them, discussing behavior problems and how
some calming techniques could decrease them, and how we can all get more family involvement.
My next competency is 007 and I feel I like our principal know how to apply organizational,
decision making and problem solving skills. There are days when my ideas or plans for my
classroom do not work. That could be because of a behavior issue, lack of material, lack of
involvement or just an unexpected assembly. Whatever the case maybe, I feel that with the
assistance of my team and students, a decision is always easily made. I have a system for
gathering my students data, and deciding what actions need to be taken to improve their scores
and be sure that they meet their goals. I think when it comes to ensuring that organization and
problem solving skills are mastered then the environment of the classroom will be successful
because items will be in place along with situations being handled when a curve ball in thrown in
the classroom.
Self-Reflection
All nine competencies are important and each carry a significance when discussing the
jobs and responsibility of the principal. As my internship comes to an end, I think about all the

areas that I have improved in as a professional in the education world, as a teacher, a leader, and
as an individual. I have learned so much through observation and collaboration with veteran staff
and administration. I think this program really allowed me to get the realization of what future
could be. It allowed me to get firsthand experience on what my potential responsibilities would
be and how I could handle them. I feel that if I had the opportunity to do this intern over, I would
like to obtain more responsibility then I was able to this round. There were two other colleagues
that were in the masters program and a lot of the duties here on campus went to them. Not
taking that as an excuse, I just would have spoken up and been more persistent on my duties and
potential jobs. I am not sure what my plans entail for next year, but I will definitely use this
experience. The experience helped me improve skills that will allow me to be more successful
with my students, my students parents, my colleagues, and with my admin. The projects that I
worked on this year involved the parents and students. I would like to continue that and increase
the amount of involvement. A lot fo the work was completed by teachers to help students and
parents, I would like to extend it and have the students assist with the work and responsibilities.
That will all them to gain responsibly and see how rewarding it is to work and see it succeed. It
will also allow them to gain experience for when they more to the next grade and school. Based
on the response of the staff and community I was able to tell if the projects were as successful as
I had hoped. One project involved mostly the special education population, I would like to
include the general population to continue to spread awareness. For our school being so small, I
feel that the special education population are still not as represented as I would hope. I plan to
use and increase the Awareness project in hopes that all see and understand how amazing these
students are.
