Document Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide project personnel with the high-level information
and design of the development project and specifications for the design of the course or
learning product.

2012 Cisco Systems, Inc. Detailed Design Document 3

Product Information
The two Introduction to Cisco Data Centers courses, DCICN and ICDCT, will prepare the
learner for a CCNA Data Center exam certification. They will cover the Data Center Cisco
technologies, including Unified Computing and virtualization, Unified Fabric (Nexus product
family and Storage Networking), Network Services (Application Control Engine (ACE), Wide
Area Application Services (WAAS), and Global Site Selector (GSS)). The courses will be
partitioned in the most effective way to reflect the need to increase the skills of various
learners. Learners may be specialized in some of the Data Center technologies and may need to
be able to perform in a broader role. For example, a computer or storage expert may need to
learn about networking, or vice versa.

Project Description
List all project components, such as courses, exams, and other learning products here:
Associate Level Data Center 1.

Course Description
DCNF will introduce the students to the three primary technologies that are used in the
Cisco Data Center. The introductory level of knowledge that is taught in these courses is
targeted for individuals that will perform only the more basic configuration tasks. The
course labs will focus on viewing configurations, but not making configuration changes or
creating new topologies.

Development Lab Equipment Requirements

This section details the resources and requirements needed to develop and test the course labs.

Required Resources
Required Item Explanation and Notes

Internet access Remote lab must be accessible from the

Internet.

Supporting Personnel
Required Item Explanation and Notes

Lab Support Personnel Remote hands to manage remote equipment.

Laboratory Topology (Development)

These tables list the recommended equipment to support the lab activities. These tables assume
a class size of eight learners.
The development hardware and software requirements are identical for development and
production. At the discretion of the Cisco Learning Partner, the number of B200 and C200
servers can be reduced to suit the needs of their developers.

Lab 1-1: Using Windows Applications as Network Tools
Item Description

Activity Objectives In this activity, you will be able to use Windows

applications and commands to investigate the IP
configuration of your PC, and your local network.
After completing this activity, you will be able to
meet these objectives:
Using the Windows command ipconfig,
determine the current network addressing
information of a PC.
Using the Windows command ping, test
connectivity to the default gateway router.
Using the Windows command arp a, view
the ARP table of the local PC and determine
the association between the IP address and
the MAC address of the default-gateway.

Activity Type Lab Exercise

Visual Objective (Required for Lab) Graphic of PC, switch and router, command
prompt and Windows configuration window.

Required Resources A PC connected to a functioning network, with

connectivity to the Internet.

Command List (Required for Lab) The following Microsoft Windows commands are
required:
arp a
ipconfig
ping

Activity Tasks

Task Objective

Task 1 Obtain the Current IP Address Information.

Task 2 View the Network Properties of the PC Ethernet

Adapter.

Task 3 Test Connectivity to the Default Gateway Router.

Task 4 View the ARP Bindings of IP Address to MAC

Address.

Activity Verification Learners have completed the activity when they

have attained these results:
Obtained valid IP address information from
the ipconfig command.
Used the Windows TCP/IP properties to view
the current configuration for the local area
connection.
Confirmed that the values set in the TCP/IP
properties were consistent with the
information obtained using the ipconfig
command.
Used the Windows ping command to test the
connectivity to the default gateway router.
Verified that the round trip time is very low.
Viewed the binding of the IP address to the
MAC address.

Lab 1-2: Observing the TCP Three-Way Handshake
Item Description

Activity Objectives In this activity, you will use a protocol analyzer

software application to view the TCP initial three-
way handshake. After completing this activity,
you will be able to meet these objectives:
Start the packet sniffer software application, to
monitor the appropriate Ethernet interface for
recording the packet flow.
Generate a TCP connection using a web
browser.
Observe the initial packets of the TCP flow,
especially the SYN packet, SYN ACK packet,
and finally the ACK packet.

Activity Type Lab Exercise

Visual Objective (Required for Lab) Graphic of PC, switch, router and internet, with a
protocol analyzer window.

Required Resources These are the resources and equipment that are
required to complete this activity:
A PC with access to the Internet

Activity Verification Learners have completed the activity when they

have attained these results:
Created an open packet-capture window,
associated with the Ethernet interface
connected to the default router.
Identified capture of the packet sequence
described.
Noted the first packet in the sequence to be
inspected in detail.
Selected and decoded three identified
captured packets, and the values match those
shown and discussed in the examples within
the task.
