Body (Systems) in Motion

Driving Question:

How can an understanding of organ systems help humans to be healthy and active?

Project Overview:

Have you ever wondered why students are required to take P.E.? Middle school students learn a
variety of sports, run the mile every month, and learn to collaborate in teams. Many students
see this class as a welcome break from traditional schoolwork, and other students see it as
torture. Yet, have you considered how this class helps you grow
into a healthy, active young adult? All humans need to
participate in some kind of physical activity in order to grow
and develop, and the body needs this exercise in order to
function properly.

As a P.E. teacher-in-training, you will consider how the body

systems work together when a person is exercising. As you
learn about several different human body systems, you will
create and lead a physical activity where several body systems
work together. You will then explain, both verbally and visually,
the role of several different body systems in this activity. As a
P.E. enthusiast, your goal is to encourage growing students to build healthy, strong bodies. The
health of the SJMS student body is in your hands!

Product: Team-Led Physical Activity

You and your team will create:

A physical game or exercise routine, designed to help keep

you and your classmates healthy and active. Each team will lead
the class in this exercise routine. When creating this exercise
routine, you need to consider space limitations and the athletic
abilities of your classmates.
A verbal presentation with three components: 1) Introduce
your activity to the class; 2) Explain how four different body
systems work together to help students participate in this
exercise; 3) Justify how participation in this exercise will help with healthy growth and
development
A visual aid that explains the function of each body system as well as the major
organs involved. You will also need to explain how the different body systems
communicate with each other and work together.

Project Tasks:
Collect information about several body systems through class activities
o Nervous System
o Circulatory and Respiratory Systems
o Skeletal and Muscular Systems
Research a body system of choice
Create an exercise routine and plan out how your group will teach and lead that
activity
Design an explanation of how four different body systems work together to allow
your classmates to perform the exercise
Create a formal presentation to share your activity with the class

Assessment
Individual: individual project tasks, quizzes, labs, classwork, collaboration points
Team: team project tasks, final exercise routine and presentation (assessed according to a
rubric)

Presentation Day Details

You must wear clothes that you are comfortable exercising in.Wear comfortable
shoes! (Even if you are not presenting on that day.)
Prepare a 3-5 minute exercise routine, which you will lead with the class
Prepare a 1-2 minute introduction to your activity and a 3-5 minute explanation of
how body systems are working together in this activity
Each person in your group must speak for an equal amount of time.
