D'Agostino, T. A., Atkinson, T. M., Latella, L. E., Rogers, M., Morrissey, D., DeRosa, A. P., &
Parker, P. A. (2017). Promoting patient participation in healthcare interactions through
communication skills training: A systematic review. Patient Education And Counseling,
doi:10.1016/j.pec.2017.02.016z

In the article, a study was conducted to research the effectiveness of communication

skills training on enhancing patient interaction in the healthcare field. The studied showed
that communication training increases the level of active participation by patients. The
active participation by patients was shown to not increase appointment time, but was
shown to increase the amount of information exchanged during the given time.

The article is a credible source because it was written by authors from the Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This is a
reputable source for this article to come from. The article was also published in a journal
for Patient Education and Counseling. The knowledge in the article comes directly from a
study done by the authors and results from the studying were posted in the article. All of
this information shows the article is a reliable source to use.

The article is a good example to use for common grounds part of the essay. The article
shows that patient participation affects the amount of information presented during a
doctor appointment which could help Mr. Smiths situation. This is a good article to use
to show Dr. Jones that Mr. Smith sees his part in the situation as well and that it is not
strictly up to Dr. Jones to fix the communication barrier.

Ha, J. F., & Longnecker, N. (2010). Doctor-Patient Communication: A Review. The Ochsner
Journal, 10(1), 3843.

The article serves the show the importance of effective doctor-patient communication and
the consequences of bad communication. The article discusses why doctors need good
communication skills, including to diagnose, give instructions, and establish a caring
environment with their patients. Without these things, correct healthcare could not be
provided. A lot of literature has been written on this topic. The article analyses this
literature and gives feedback on doctor-patient communication in the process.

This article proves it credibility through its publication in the Ochsner Journal at the US
National Library of Medicine. The article was also written by doctors who have first hand
experience on the subject. Their expertise enables the reader to know the source is
reliable information and its recent publication date shows the information is up to date.
This article would serve well to back up the new contribution made by Mr. Smith in the
letter. The article backs up a lot of information presented in the case study, like the ability
to receive more important information from the patient when the doctor has good
communication skills. The article also includes strategies to improve communication
skills that Mr. Smith can suggest to Dr. Jones.

Kee, J. W., H. S., Lim, I., & Koh, M. Y. (2017). Communication Skills in Patient-Doctor
Interactions: Learning from Patient Complaints. Health Professions Education,
doi:10.106/j.hpe.2017.03.006

The above source discusses communication skills taught to doctors in medical school.
Although doctors are taught communication skills, there is still a great amount of
ineffective communication between doctors and their patients. In the source, a study was
conducted to analyze the complaints by patients about their doctors communication
skills. The results of the study were used to find solutions to the common mistakes of
doctors, including active listening and interrupting the patient.

The credibility of this source is proven through the education of its authors, credibility of
the journal, and date it was written. This is a credible source because the authors are
educated members of the National Healthcare Group in Singapore who have done
research on the subjects discussed in the article. The article was also published in a
journal which shows that it is reliable information. Because the article was published
recently, it is also known that the information stated is not outdated.

The source is a useful example of the problems associated with poor doctor-patient
communication. Some of the complaints in the source study directly relate to the
complaints Mr. Smith has towards Dr. Jones. I will use this source to show Dr. Jones the
downfalls in doctor-patient communication and ways to fix the unproductive
communication that was exhibited in the case study.

Zuger, A. (2016). A Doctor on Schedule, Rarely on Time. The New York Times. p. D5.

The article A Doctor on Schedule, Rarely on Time tells the story of Abigail Zuger, a
medical doctor who is late for work. The narrative provides the reader with an inside
looks on the thoughts of doctors who must follow a strict schedule in order to survive the
day. Zuger shows how detrimental being behind on their schedules can be on doctors
communication with their patients. Due to lack of time, doctors often resort to bad
communication skills in order to get to the most important issue at hand. Instead of taking
their time and fully evaluating the patient, they try to get through the appointment as
quickly as possible and onto the next patient.

The article is a credible source because it comes first hand from a medical doctor. Dr.
Zugar provides an expert testimony in her article that is often missed out on from other
articles on the subject. The reader can be sure the information given in the article is a true
reason for bad communication from doctors because it is told from the perspective of a
doctor who has experienced it.
The article provides a nice view from the doctors perspective that can be used to help in
persuading Dr. Jones to see Mr. Smiths view on communication. The article provides
good information that can be used in the area of the letter that summarizes the audiences
side of the argument. By knowing the other side of the argument, Mr. Smith will be better
able to relate to Dr. Jones which will help when writing the letter.
