Central focus:
The world is an enormous place, filled with people who are spread throughout the vast expanse of Fantasy and Reality. This
lesson explores this space between fantasy and reality and challenges students to invent an imaginary form out of clay. Students
will study the work of artist Lindsay Feuer, which often demonstrate hybridity of natural forms with implied movement. Students
will do personal research on different existing organic forms in Nature. Students will create sketches to brainstorm ideas, and one
sketch will be used to develop the final clay form. Various hand building techniques will be used, and clay forms will evolve and
change throughout the construction. Students will write a paragraph explaining their work.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify fantasy and reality through organic forms in the work of Lindsay Feuer, and interpret it in their
own artworks.

2. Students will interpret and explore multiple solutions to a 3D artwork through

at least 3 sketches before starting the clay work, and write at least a paragraph to describe their inspiration, and thought process
in sculpting their clay work, after finishing the project.

3. Students will combine hand building techniques to create an hybrid organic

sculptural form with variety of surface textures.

4. Students will demonstrate good craftsmanship.

Art making activity:

Students will brainstorm different ways to combine at least two different organic forms through pencil sketches.

Students will use different handbuilding techniques to create an imaginary, hybrid organic form.

Students will create at least three different surface textures on their sculptures.

After the sculptures are fired in the kiln for the first time, students will coat their sculptures in clear, white glaze before
being fired a second time.

Assessment:

and interpret it in their own artworks.
Students will proficiently interpret and explore multiple solutions to a 3D artwork through pencil sketches.
