1. Detached Open-Ended Narrative Tool
also known as Selective Verbatim or Script Taping
observer records every person, event or thing that attracts his or her attention
the STAR Tool may also be utilized

2. Participant Open-Ended Observation


a situation in which the observer partakes in the classroom activities
observer may assist in the instruction by working with a group or helping individual students
advantage: insights may be culled from direct participation

3. Child-Centered Learning Observation


focuses primarily on the learner, rather than the instructor
observer may record observations in response to the following questions:
