The Parts of a Computer

Title:

In this lesson students will identify the basic parts of a computer and
Overview/Annotation: the functions of each component. Students will create a model of a
computer.

Associated Standards and Objectives

Content Standard(s): TC2 (K-2) 1. Identify basic parts of various technology
systems.
Naming input and output devices
Examples: inputkeyboard, stylus
outputprinter

Local/National
Standards:

Students will name each part of the computer and describe the main
Primary Learning function. Students will create a model computer and label the parts
Objective(s): correctly.

Additional Learning
Objective(s):

Preparation Information
Total Duration: 31 to 60 Minutes

Small cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, box lids, crayons, glue,

Materials and Resources: scissors, construction paper, poster board, yarn

(remedial) cards with computer part pictures, 1 set for each

student

(Use index cards, then paste various pictures of computer parts

cut from magazines, sales papers, etc.)

Classroom computer and printer,

Technology Resources
Needed: Computer Lab (if available),

Student Writing Center software or other word processing

software

Students do not need previous knowledge of a computer or the

Background/Preparation: functions.

Procedures/Activities:
1.)The class should be positioned so that each student can see the class computer. If a
computer lab is available, each student should be seated at a computer. Have students follow
each step on their computers after the teacher models each step, if possible.

2.)Begin by showing the students the CPU, explain that this is the "brain", this is where the
computer performs all tasks. Point to the power button, tell the class this is how we turn the
computer on. Turn on.

3.)While the computer is booting up, point to the blinking light, explain that this is how we
know the computer is working or busy. There should also be a power light, that does not blink,
point to this light and explain that if this light is on the computer is on.

4.)Next show the students the CD-ROM drive and a CD-ROM. Explain that this is one way to
input information into the computer "brain".

5.)Now show the students a 3.5" floppy disk. Tell them that this is another way to input
information and that you can also save information to the floppy and take it with you.
Demonstrate how to put the floppy disk in the drive, and then how to use the button to remove
the disk.

6.)Show the class the monitor. Explain that this is where we see what we are doing on the
computer. Show the students the power button. Turn the monitor on and explain that the
computer can still be on if the monitor is off.

7.)Show the students the keyboard and the mouse. Explain that these are also input devices,
what each does and how we use them.

8.)Use the mouse to click on the Student Writing Center icon (or other word processing
program). Open a blank journal page.

9.)Use the keyboard to type on the blank page so the students can see how the keyboard
works. If all students are seated at computers, they may type their names, the ABC's, or
sentences.

10.)Close the program by clicking on the X in the top right corner of the screen. Click on the
No when the save box appears.

11.)Divide students into groups of 3, allow students a few minutes to brainstorm how they can
create a model computer.

12.)One student from each group will gather the needed supplies from supply areas, and
students will design and create their own computer. When finished students will attach a label
to each component.

Assessment
Assessment of this lesson will be by teacher observation of students working in
Assessment small groups to create a model computer and label the parts. The monitor,
Strategies keyboard, CPU, and mouse must be labeled correctly.

Students may write a story using word processing software and print it.
Acceleration:

Students will play " Name that Computer Part."

Intervention:
Each student will be given a set of cards with pictures of the computer parts on
them. The teacher will read a statement and the students will hold up the
appropriate computer part. For example:

a) I show you what you are doing on the computer.

b) I am an input device that has keys with letters on them. You use me to type.

c) I am the "brain" of the computer.

d) I am an input device named after a rodent.

e) The computer power button is located here.

f) Just point and click me to select something.

g) Where can you see what programs are on a computer?

h) What is a monitor?

i) What is a keyboard?

j) What is a CPU?

k) What is a mouse?

Teacher may add additional questions if desired.
