We are so grateful for everyone that has donated, shared, and helped spread the word.
Because of you we have been able to finish building the roof for all three classrooms on
the second floor! Your generosity is much appreciated. All that remains now is to make
each classroom a safe and educational environment for the children. This includes
cementing the floors and walls, putting in windows and lights, and installing the bathrooms.
To accomplish this, we would like to ask our supporters once more to continue spreading
our campaign so that more people can be given the opportunity to contribute and make a
difference. Every little bit helps, and we are optimistic that together this project can
become a great success. A HUGE thanks to everyone for your continuous support and for
believing in the organization and our work!
Blandine was unable to go to school for two months because of her battle with
tuberculosis. The weight loss and loss of appetite made her extremely weak and the spinal
pain and joint destruction made walking a difficult task. She is now well enough to return to
school and continue her studies. Blandine is currently in her 3rd year of elementary school
and is very excited to go back!
Everyone at PDH is very thankful for her recovery and whishes Blandine all the best in
continuing her education and everything else she may pursue!
Abla has managed to continue paying her childrens school fees even after her husband
left eight years ago, and her children love going to school every day! If you or someone
you know is interested in sponsoring this family, please see section 9. Abla and PDH
would greatly appreciate any support that can be given to ensure that this family can
continue sending Amouzou Yayra and Amouzou Kokou to school as well as having a safe
place to live. Thank you!
Girl with Mental Illness Spends Days Chained to Bench at Local Church
In Togo, it is a common practice to take those with mental illnesses to a church where they
are often kept for multiple days. The logic behind this is that they are less of a danger to
themselves and others when they become agitated and violent and that by being in a
church together with prayer they will be healed.
On Monday February 27th a women came to PDH asking for help in getting her younger
sister from the church and to a hospital where she can get the proper care that she needs.
PDH is looking to work together with the church to get this woman to a hospital where she
can be treated by a professional as well as through prayer.
On Feburary 11th Togolese street artists Sitou (SMI), Patriot and Trez set up an art
exhibition at the French Institute located in downtown Lom to display their work. Not only
were they present opening day to create most of the pieces displayed, the three artists
also did a live demonstration on one of the Institutes blank walls. The Institute will host
this exhibition for approximately a month.
Since opening day these three artists have painted over their live demonstration work and
collaborated together to create a pre-planned piece. The wall is now covered with 3D
graffiti lettering, a portrait of NBA player James Harden (though most people think it is a
portrait of Sitou himself), a colourful chameleon and more!
On February 25th the artists began their first childrens workshop on graffiti art, and over
twenty Togolese children attended. The second workshop will be held on March 1 st, where
the children will be given the opportunity to work together to create their own graffiti art on
one of the Institutes walls. The following week a film on the history of graffiti art will be
shown.
If you would like to check out more of their work, all three
of them can be found on Instagram!

PDH warmly welcomes international interest in our volunteer program. We have hosted a
diverse crowd in Lom over the last decade from solo travelers, to groups of friends, to
one mother-daughter pairing all of whom fit into the organization equally well.
Regardless of your age (we have seen 18 through to 67) or your profession, volunteer
work in Togo can be a profound, rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Volunteer News:
We are excited to announce that two of our current volunteers, Kristiana Dhillon and
Benjamin Francis Lew, have decided to start their own projects to aid PDH and the
local community!
As with any small organization, PDH heavily relies on volunteer donations, a funding
source that is not always very reliable. A method that PDH can use to secure more
funding is by applying for grants and requests for proposals. However in order to do
so any proposal designed by PDH must meet certain standards in order for their
requests to be considered. Kristiana is in the process of planning a weeklong
workshop on creating grant proposals for the interns of PDH. The workshop will
cover topics such as project design, searching for funding opportunities, and
monitoring and evaluation. The goal of this workshop is to strengthen PDHs capacity
to seek out and secure funding for their various projects. The workshop will introduce
the interns to the grant writing process, instruct them on the basics of projects
design, and emphasize the importance of M&E and designing sustainable projects. It
will be comprised of a mix of lectures and presentations, group activities,
brainstorming sessions, and a final evaluation to assess the interns comprehension
and give them the opportunity to provide feedback. Instruction will take place during
Here in Togo where the rate of HIV infection is 2.5% in the general population, there
are certain key populations that suffer disproportionately from the virus such as sex
workers (11.7%) and men engaging in sexual relations with other men (MSM;
13.1%). Members of these populations are at a much higher risk of infection not only
because of their sexual practices but also because of the social stigma directed
towards them. Benjamin is currently working on a project to address this imbalance
and provide urgent support for the most vulnerable members of the MSM
community. Project Safehouse is a collaborative effort between PDH and JMAH
(Jeunes Missionnaries dAide Humanitaire) to provide emergency shelter and
support for victims of social exclusion and discrimination. This can include being
thrown out of their homes or being put in other highly compromised conditions. The
project is being designed to supplement the existing medical programmes of PDH
and JMSH, which provide testing and medication to these communities and by
helping these individuals with the most basic of human needs. Once functioning the
Safehouse will provide a safe space for these people to regain their dignity as well
as services that will provide education, mediation and opportunity to its clients so as
to rehabilitate them into society. Reconciling them with their families where possible
and providing the requisite skills and knowledge to earn a living are some of the
services that The Safehouse will be providing.
We are open-minded and welcome the insights of those willing to share with us. If
you or someone you know may want to volunteer and help us make a difference,
reach out to us and come join us. No matter how long or short your visit will be we
trust that your time here will be memorable and teach you many things unachievable
by reading the pages of a book. We also know that any length of stay always proves
very helpful to us for achieving our common goal of providing support for those in
need.
