Intro to Writing ENGL 1010

Semester Reflection

When enrolling in this course I assumed it would be another

typical English course. I anticipated writing and submitting many

assignments only to enter and leave the class with the same exact set of

writing skills. However, to my surprise, that view was proved otherwise.

I was intimidated by the 1200 word requirements and it was difficult

trying to express myself using these new methods. Transitions were also a

significant concern. I have a track record of jumping from topic to topic

without rhyme or reason.

Finally when I received the feedback from project one, I was shocked.

My professors feedback was almost as extensive as the work I turned in. It

was impossible to be upset with my grade because of the concise coaching

that was provided. Quickly I learned the true meaning of draft work. The only

way to improve writing is under examination. I have acquired a new respect

for proofing.

The most needed skill acquired from project two was finally starting to

grasp analytical thinking. Suspend judgment of the artifacts. You should be

describing and explaining not evaluating and critiquing. Observe what

actually is... Doctor Christopher N Blankenship. Suspending judgment

initially seems like you should take yourself away from the writing. What it

actually means, is explain why it is, that you or the author decided to express

them self in that manner and then prove it. I would consider generally this

skill to be the most valuable of my writing and speaking. Describing and

explaining for the most part removes personal bias from the analysis.

Over the course of project three I learned the significance of an

interview when compiling data. Like discussed in my project, having current

up to date information about any area of study is irreplaceable. However,

more than that I discovered that person to person communication yields

great results! This was true for my interview for this project but also when

interacting with my professor. The 1 on 1 support visits with Doctor

Blankenship were extremely useful. Despite the fact that the outlines he

provided for adjustments were always very descriptive. The result of these

support visits gave a perspective and learning opportunity unattainable by

any other means.

Despite my pre conceived notions this course has improved my writing

abilities. I am convinced that the skills and patience that I acquired

throughout the duration of this class will serve me well for the rest of my life.
