Theprimaryconcernwithalltransformers(andalsothekeyindicatoroflifeexpectancy)istheconditionofthe

InsulationResistanceTests

Insulationresistance,measuredbyapplicationofanimpressedDCvoltage(i.e.Megger),givesageneralindication

PartialDischargeTests

Partialdischargesarelocalisedincipientelectricaldischargesthatonlypartiallybridgetheinsulationbetween

Partialdischargetestingcandetectthepresenceandlocationofpartialdischargeactivityinatransformer.Partial
dischargesintransformersaretypicallymeasuredbyapplyingaprespecifiedvoltagetothetransformerwindings
andmeasuringinducedchargesviaacouplingdevice(e.g.couplingcapacitors).

FrequencyResponseAnalysis

AcousticEmissionTests

Partialdischargesintransformerscanalsobedetectedandlocalisedviaacousticemissiontesting.Acoustic
emissiontestingisbasedontheacousticdetectionofthepartialdischargepulsesandconversiontoanelectrical
signal.Sensorsarecoupledtothesurfaceofthetransformerandduringoperationofthetransformer,theoutputof

ThermographicSurveys

Infraredthermographyiscommonlyusedinpreventativemaintenancetodetecthotspots,especiallyatjointsand
terminations.IRThermographycamerasmeasuresurfacetemperaturesandtheresultingthermalimagecanbeused
toidentifyoverheatingatthetransformerterminations.
