UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Students will learn about the different aspects of the solar system, including Earth, which they will learn
about in depth to understand how life can be sustained on Earth.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:

Students will work in groups and do internet research to create and present a PowerPoint about a planet in the
solar system that addresses everything in the rubric.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

Common Core State StandardScience SPI 0307.6.1 Identify the major components of the solar system, i.e., sun
planets and moons.
ITSE StandardCommunication and Collaboration
o B. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and
formats.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

This lesson is a review lesson about the solar systemit will serve as a project grade in place of an exam grade.
Students who are not present during the two days it will take to prepare the presentation will have to take a
written exam in place of the presentation.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
First Day: The teacher will explain the project to the students so they understand what they are going to
do before they are broken into groups (900-904)

Second Day: The teacher will again explain to students what is expected of them and remind them that
they need to use the day to create their PowerPoint. (900-904)

Third Day: The teacher will list the order of presentations on the board. (900-902)

Procedures:

First Day:

1. Students will be assigned to their groupsthere will be 9 groups of 3 students. (904-910)


2. Once students have been broken into groups, the teacher will assign a planet to each group. (910-913)
3. The teacher will hand out the direction sheet and the notes sheet for the students to complete. (913-915)
4. The students will go to the computer lab with their sheets and a pencil/pen to do the research on their
planet. (915-940)
5. The students will return to the classroom and put away their work and prepare for the next subject. (940-
945)

Second Day:

1. Students will break into their groups and head to the computer lab to make their presentation. (904-940)
2. Students will save their presentation and then return to the classroom to prepare for the next subject. (940-
945)

Third Day:

1. Each group will present in the order listed on the board.


a. While the groups are presenting, the students in the audience will fill out the during presentation
note sheet to record what they learned from the presenters.

Closure: The closure of this project will be the students handing in their during presentation note sheets.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Summative Assessments:
The presentations themselvesshows the students ability to conduct research and put it into a
format that can be used to teach others
The During Presentation Note Sheetshold the students accountable for paying attention during
the presentations.

MODIFICATIONS:

Modifications will not be used for this project as it is a review project that is research based.
