Title of Lesson: Make a statement
Grade: 8th

STANDARDS
PO 5. Analyze changing ideas and viewpoints on the best use of natural resources (e.g., value of
oil, water use, forest management).

other information in print and digital texts.
LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

To begin this lesson, there will be a quick review over the uses of water that was discussed in
previous days as part of the unit overview. After the review on what was discussed in the
previous lessons, there will be a discussion about the importance of conserving water and how
the students can take simple actions to conserve water in their everyday lives.
After class discussion, the students will create a poster that will represent water
conservation/why you should save water/water sustainability. Students can work individually,
with a partner or in a group of three. This topic is relevant to the unit on sustainability as it makes
a statement of how or why it is important to conserve water.

OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to analyze information and create a poster ways to reduce, reuse,
and recycle water.
Students will be able to understand the amount of water we have available on earth.
Students will be able to know that water is a natural resource and ways to help conserve it
in various ways.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
To assess students knowledge, I will be checking to see that the students have represented
through the poster at least one example of how they can conserve water or represented why it is
important to conserve water.

Students will need to know how we use water every day personally as well as a society. That we
have a limited amount of water available on Earth for human use.

TEACHING PROCEDURES
The teacher will display several different posters from various sources. As a class, students will
brainstorm the purpose of posters. Some responses may include: To get peoples attention, to get
people to do something, to give people information.

Examples of posters
Movie posters
Advertisements
Campaign signs
Billboard pictures

Have a class discussion about ways to conserve water. We will develop a class list that I will
write on the white board for students to reflect on and reference. Let students know that they will
construct a poster that will represent water conservation/sustainability and they can work alone,
with a partner or a group of three. As students are working I will leave the class list about ways
to conserve water on the board for students to reference. When students are complete they will
share with the class and state their thought process behind their poster.

WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION

Water is limited and an irreplaceable resource that is fundamental to sustain life. It is only
renewable if well managed, to do this it involves strategic thinking. Strategic Thinking means
forming a strategy or plan by understanding the possible outcomes to achieve short or long term
goals. Having a strategic vision helps address the needs water users to ensure the capability of
the future.
