Annotated Bibliography

Book
Parks, Rosa, and James Haskins. Rosa Parks: My Story. New York: Dial Books, 1992. Print.

(Haskins)
This source is a book that provides details about Rosa Parks early life, the civil rights
movement, and her life after that up until she died in 2004. This source could be used for
research and also personal knowledge and entertainment. This source may be limited on
the perspectives of those around her because it is just her point of view and her opinion.
This is also a weak point. The strength of this source is the personal accounts of her life.
This source will help my project because I could discuss the things that happened after
the peak of the civil rights movement was over. I would like to be known as a person
who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity for all people.
James Haskins is a black history author that over 100 books for adults and children that
focused on historical black figures.

Yount, Lisa. A to Z of Women in Science and Math. New York, NY: Facts on File, 1999. Print.
(Yount)
This source is a book about women of all races that are in the world of science and math.
This source includes Mae Jemison and Katharine Johnson who were both involved in
NASA. This purpose of this source is for research and furthering knowledge about the
topic and it can be used by anyone. There are limitations for this source because it does
not provide many deep details about the subjects since its so many people in the book.
This could be seen as a weak source because it gives a brief summary of their life.
This source can be considered a weak source because it is limited to the basic information
such as where they are born, why they are significant in science and/or math, and what
they did. I would not use this source because this is information I could find in other
sources.
This is a credible source because Lisa Yount is a scholastic book author and she is a
nonfiction author.

Magazine
Meter, Jonathan Van. "Michelle Obama: A Candid Conversation With Americas Champion and Mother
in Chief." Vogue 11 Nov. 2016: n. pag. Print.
(Van Meter)
This interview in this magazine was talking about Michelle Obamas life in the White
House and how she deals with being a mother and a wife while being such an influence to
America. This source is for entertainment and its to inform readers about Michelles life.
This source is not really limited but it is just personal information so this is a strong
source. There are not any weaknesses.

This will help our project because it can give us more than just information found on a
biography website. We can add the personal details to what we say about her and why she
is an influence. She said, They hang on my every word, what I wear, what I say. And its
not just kids at Howard; its not just African-American kids.
This interviewer is credible because he works for Vogue Magazine and he has
interviewed Michelle a number of time and he has been to the White House countless
times which shows that he is trusted. He has a great reputation

Biographical Data." NASA. NASA, n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

(NASA, Biographical Data)
This source is a biography about Mae Jemison and it is here to inform readers about her
early life and her involvement with NASA. This can be used for research. There are no
weaknesses to this source but it is just limited to information before 1993. This can be a
strong source because it gives her experience with her college degree and with NASA.
This will help our project because we can talk about her experience with her two college
degrees and why they are important. This source talked about how she has been involved
with research with Hepatitis B and how she has went overseas to West Africa for the
Peace Corps.
This source is credible because it is NASA and it is their official website.

Loff, Sarah. "Katherine Johnson Biography." NASA. NASA, 22 Nov. 2016. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
(Loff, Katherine Johnson Biography)
This source is a biography about Katherine Johnson and it is to inform readers about her
early life and how her knowledge in math and science has been an influence and an asset
to NASA. This is also used for research and information. This source is strong because it
gives information about the recent movie, Hidden Figures. There are no limitations to this
source because it was just updated last year.
This will help for my project because it will allow me to make references to the movie so
people can relate to what we are saying. This is one of the reasons why this source is
being used. It makes a reference to Taraji P. Henson.
The source is NASA so that is a credible source that is fact checked and that is their
official website

"First Lady Biography: Michelle Obama." Michelle Obama Biography :: National First Ladies' Library.
N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
(First Lady Biography: Michelle Obama)
This source is a biography that can be used for entertainment or research purposes. It is
an informative source. It talks about her life before becoming a first lady, her education,
when and where she was born, then her achievements before and during her time as a first
lady. This is a strong source because they give detailed information about everything

from her height to her siblings and religious affiliation but the weakness is the fact that it
was last updated in 2009. That is also a limitation.
This will help our project because it will give us fun facts about her that may be some of
the things the audience wouldnt know. That is also why we will use this source.
Michelle Obama stands at the same height as Eleanor Roosevelt, making them both
equally the tallest First Ladies.
This is a credible source because this comes from the National First Ladies Library which
has information that is accurate about all first ladies.

Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-56) | The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed." Montgomery Bus
Boycott (1955-56) | The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
(Montgomery Bus Boycott)
This source gives a summary of the events leading up to the boycott, the boycott itself
and then what happened afterwards and the effects it had on the civil rights movement.
The purpose is for personal knowledge and research. There are no limitations to this
source and this source is strong because it gets straight to the point. It can also be seen as
a weakness because it does not talk about anything else. There are links to click on for
further information.
This will help our project because it can give us more information about what Rosa Parks
was involved in and it gives us background information. The only thing missing [from
the planned boycott] was a good test candidate and respectable, middle-class Rosa Parks
seemed perfect for the role.
This source seems credible but it is hard to tell because there is no author and this website
has plenty of information but that cannot be a definite indication even though the website
is .org.

"Mae Jemison." PBS. Public Broadcasting Service, n.d. Web. 05 Apr. 2017.
(PBS, Mae Jemison)
This source is a little different because it is a group of videos that talk about different
parts of Mae Jemison's life like her heavy involvement in dancing. Each video talks about
something different and it has direct quotes above the videos. There is even a part about
her acting in Star Trek. The purpose of this source is for entertainment and education.
There are no weaknesses but the strengths are how informative the short videos are and
how they give information straight from her.
This will help our project because the videos are something different and it will entertain
the audience because it will give facts that arent normally known. She said, I didnt
even think about whether Id be the first African-American woman in space I just
wanted to go into space.
This source is credible because it is PBS which is known for plenty of great interviews
and reliable information.

Bolden, Charles. "Katherine Johnson, the NASA Mathematician Who Advanced Human Rights with a
Slide Rule and Pencil." Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair, 22 Aug. 2016. Web. 05 Apr. 2017.
(Bolden, Katherine Johnson, the NASA Mathematician Who Advanced Human Rights with a Slide Rule
and Pencil)
This source is a magazine article that is an interview about her life involving math and
how her early life affected that. This source includes direct quotes which is a plus. This
source is used for entertainment and not necessarily research but it can be used for direct
quotes and personal information that couldnt be found in a biography. There are no
weaknesses or limitations because this article covers her whole life. This is a strength
because it gives so much information and direct quotes.
This will definitely help because again, the direct quotes are a plus because it lets us
know what she truly thought about her life.
This is a credible source because vanity fair is a popular and trusted magazine.
"Maya Angelou." Biography.com. A&E Networks Television, 06 Feb. 2015. Web. 05
Apr. 2017.
(A&E, Maya Angelou)
This source is another biography about Maya Angelou and it also has a written part and a video
that gives a quick summary. This is used for entertainment purposes but people would also use it
for research and information. This is limited because it gives much of the information we knew
already and it is seen in other sources. It has a strength because it has a video.
It would probably not help out project because we already have much of the information from
other sources but the video would help. It tells us that she was the first black train conductor in
San Francisco which is a great fun fact.
This source is trusted because A&E is a TV network and it has high ratings on many shows and
this source was last updated this year.
