Salesians - family of Life and Love

S
t John Bosco, familiarly known as Don Bosco, wanted his Congrega on to be a 'family'.
Don Bosco knew that the family forms an integral part of life, and is very important for the
holis c growth of the individual. This is the reason that the Rector Major of the Salesians
of Don Bosco, Fr ngel Fernndez Ar me, reiterates this dimension in his vision for this year's
Strenna (theme) to the Salesian Family: "We are a Family: Every home, a school of Life and Love!"
When Don Bosco was ordained in 1841, Turin was in turbulence. With the Industrial Revolu on
making headway in Piedmont, many young people migrated from the impoverished
countryside to the industrialised Turin, in the hope of finding employment and a be er life.
They lived on the streets, and were exploited by the industrialists; many ended up in prison.
Don Bosco decided to work for these youngsters.
Not everyone approved of the idea of a priest working with street children. Don Bosco was
forced to make a choice: to be a priest within the Church establishment, or with the boys
living in poverty. He made the op on for the poor. This was not an easy decision; it le him
without housing, without promo on prospects, without an income and not much of a future.
The core of his work was in the Oratory. It started as a kind of Sunday school, where Don Bosco
met the boys from the street for worship, catechesis, recrea on and breakfast. Gradually, it
developed into a youth centre, which was a combina on of a home, a school, a playground
and a parish. This combina on ensured that the young received an all-round forma on:
human and emo onal (home), intellectual (school), social and recrea onal (playground), and
spiritual (parish). Don Bosco envisaged that every Salesian work would be this combina on,
and above all, a family!
An elderly woman expressed her loneliness within her church: "I sit in the pew next to a
warm body every week, but I feel no heat. I'm in the faith, but I draw no ac ve love. I sing the
hymns with those next to me, but I hear only my voice. When the service is finished, I leave
as I came inhungry for someone to tell me that I'm a person worth something to somebody.
Just a smile would do it, or perhaps some gesture, some sign that I am not a stranger."
I daresay she is not alone in her "loneliness". We have many friends in the virtual world, but
very few companions in the real world. And yet, we need real rela onships; we need warmth
and love; we need signs that we are not strangers. We need the presence of people in our
lives. God never intended for us to be alone; He created us rela onal.
No wonder, an important aspect in Don Bosco's spirituality and pedagogy is 'presence'. In the
Salesian tradi on, 'presence' is being with the people entrusted to our care. It is a physical,
ac ve and anima ng 'being with'. It means having their best interests and welfare at heart;
it implies establishing rela onships with them based on love, mutual respect, equality and
coopera on, rather than fear and superiority. Presence demands that we love what people
love, so that they can learn to love what we love. It is a sharing in their lives: listening and
speaking, playing and praying, laughing and crying, encouraging and challenging, correc ng
and guiding. Through sharing our lives and ourselves, we communicate the presence of God's
life-giving love to His people.
For everyone, Don Bosco is a gi from heaven: for the Church, for the Salesian Family, for the
countless boys he knew personally, and for the millions with whom his sons and daughters
interact. For his Salesian Family, Don Bosco is the model, the father and the teacher to the
faithful following of Jesus. Even though the actual circumstances in which we live are very
dierent, Don Bosco's spirituality and his project have a striking relevance in our world. May
he con nue to inspire us to be a 'family', where life and love abide and grow!

Strenna to the Salesian Family
W
E ARE FAMILY! And we are born as a family!
The ecclesial events that we have experienced
a er two synods and the apostolic exhorta on
Amoris Laea (AL) of Pope Francis, demand love, which is always
gladly for us as Salesian Familythat we focus our educa onal
and pastoral a en on on the family.
One becomes a person living in a family, growing, usually
with one's parents, breathing the warmth of the home, and it
is in the family and the home that we are given a name, and
therefore a dignity; we experience aec on; we cherish the
in macy of this family, and we learn to ask for permission,
for forgiveness and express our gra tude.
Besides this, the Strenna is directed to the members of the
Salesian Family which, through its strong tradi on, is growing
as a FAMILY. That is why we, as members of the Salesian
Family, see it as a duty not only to look inward, but to love in
another direc on, in the direc on of the Universal Church in
which we are strongly involved under the leadership of Pope
Francis, whose duty it is to give the Church its direc on.
An invitaon to a calm, open reading with a ready heart
I make first of all an invita on to a calm and open reading,
with the heart ready for dialogue and encounter with what
the apostolic exhorta on says, so that it may help us as
Salesian Family to discover what the document oers.
The document is a service to humanity from the
perspec ve of Catholic belief, and a true spiritual and
pastoral treasure. And we get involved in it from the
awareness that "we are a Salesian Family."
The Pope himself says, "We need to be humble and
realis c, acknowledging that at mes we have proposed
a far too abstract and almost ar ficial theological ideal of
marriage, far removed from the concrete situa ons and
prac cal possibili es of real families. (AL n. 36).
A synthesis of the content of the Pope's exhortaon: to
discover our duty as a Salesian Family with families
The text contains the already known characteris cs of the
magisterium of Pope Francis; it is a realis c, close, direct and
sugges ve text. It is not a document that speaks of the family
in an abstract way, but one that touches life, to give a word
of encouragement to many people who need it.
In the apostolic exhorta on, the Pope traces the biblical
and theological, moral and pastoral summa concerning the
family, invi ng us to bring out the posi ve and humanising

aspects of human
love, which is a
reflec on of God's
stronger than the
failures of our
human plans.
The document
contains nine
chapters. Each
chapter admirably
intertwines fidelity
to the truth with
compassion and
mercy. The document
is illumined from the
Word of God, without
ignoring the present situa on.
Chapter 1, "In the Light of the Word," recalling the
unity of doctrine and praxis needed is interpreted "in a
dierent way." In Chapter 2, "The Experiences and Reali es
of Families," the survey extends to the reality and the
challenges of families, with the desire "to keep firmly
grounded in reality" (AL n. 6), with a sociological and cultural
perspec ve that seeks also to oer a nuanced, realis c, and
hopeful vision. (AL n. 57). Chapter 3, "Looking to Jesus: the
Voca on of the Family," opens the door to the witness of the
complexity of irregular situa ons, and the transmission of
life and faith to the children. Chapter 4, "Love in Marriage,"
ar culates in a beau ful way the well-known hymn to love of
1 Cor 13 without idealising ("It is not helpful to dream of an
idyllic and perfect love" [AL n. 135]); words that Pope Francis
directly addresses to the young (nn. 131-132). Chapter 5,
"Love Made Frui ul," speaks of a love that is expansive,
frui ul, dynamic, passionate: words such as frui ulness,
genera on, understanding of the father and the mother
in the process are key words, invi ng families to be places
of integra on and points of contact between the public
and the private spheres. A pastoral chapter was essen al
in order to enter concrete life in depth. Chapter 6, "Some
Pastoral Perspec ves," because they provide a nuanced,
dynamic, and complex approach in which to locate par cular
ques ons. "Toward a Be er Educa on of Children" is the
theme of Chapter 7 (AL nn. 259-290). Children are the hope
that is open to the future. At the same me, Pope Francis
hopes that "everyone should feel challenged by Chapter 8,"
which is en tled "Accompanying, Discerning, and Integra ng
Weakness" (AL nn.291-312) The ninth and last chapter is
dedicated to "The Spirituality of Marriage and the Family"
(AL nn. 313-325). Because of this, "Let us walk, families, let
us con nue to walk, and let us not lose hope."
And since we believe that the family is Good News for the
world we feel commi ed, and we want to be even more
commi ed, wherever in the world our Salesian religious
family is present.
Every Home, A School of Life and Love: our educa onal-
pastoral contribu on
Being close to help construct and repair
We already ask ourselves whether we can do something
in favour of these families, star ng from our reality as
educators and pastors, because in these contexts, we are
asked to exercise empathy in the face of the suering caused
by such situa ons. We help them to accept the condi on of
one's limits; oer each member of the family the opportunity
to enrich oneself with the love that is oered. Gratuitousness
is the star ng point for building the family. This is the
aec ve element. There is a point of cons tu ve solitude in
the human condi on that prevents total communica on. This
is the spiritual element. Eventually, we are being asked to be
present to help build and restore.
In the school of life that is the family
From a Salesian perspec ve, we cannot talk of the vital
educa onal value of the family without making families
aware that the family is more than a "centre of income
and consump on" or an "eec ve point of reference."
They should be made to realise that intense intra-familial
communica on, not limited to discussions of just a useful
nature. Children are to be so trained that concrete ethical
responsibili es are expected of them. The atmosphere in
the family should be conducive to educa on for everyday
family life, experiencing the radical equality of each one
with respect to needs, rights, and du es, as well as mutual
respect. This becomes possible when everyone realises that
there is a space for living with the capability of encouraging
real rela onships of dialogue. When this takes place, the
family becomes an experience of love, and not a place where
one feels the weight of the law, and where one learns to love

freely. Therefore, a family is a school of life, and it contains
in itself opposed but harmonised elements that prepare for
life through typical family values. It then, is a school of life,
because it oers values and hope as well.
The decisive Salesian pastoral mission: Accompaniment
As Salesian Family, we propose this beau ful challenge that
is more current than ever by helping to accompany parents,
spouses, and those who head families; teaching them to
accompany children, especially those in our communi es,
as also our youth, the families from which they come, the
parishes they belong to, and young people in general.
Firmly deciding to make a priority of educa onal-pastoral
a en on to families by taking defini ve and firm steps
to make accompaniment a priority. Therefore, seeing
this as urgent and a cause for ecclesial reflec on and
discernment. In this way, helping families to educate and
grow with aec on and heart, with everything this implies
in our educa onal ("preven ve") system. This would also
imply taking seriously the all-important task of the sexual
educa on of their children, and thus help them in due
me to discover sacramental marriage as a "voca on",
as a path to holiness. This will contribute in some way to
foster in families the sense of the joy of loving. This should
enable families to become "spaces of life" where parents
train children to freedom, to know and love God. This
will be an opportunity to educate families, educators and
young people, and be educated ourselves, to the value of
Crea on, as a responsible answer to Crea on, and to the
poverty that is generated when the harmony of Crea on is
not a ended to.
Finally, there are some concrete commitments of the
Salesian Family toward families, e.g. the mission of the
Salesian Family in the light of Don Bosco's Preven ve
System: making of the world a home like a large family
playground of friends, of training for life, of encountering
God. To help us achieve this awesome task, we commend
ourselves to the Mother who is always our guarantor, as we
make our pilgrim way.

SPCSA & Salesian India
A Strategic Evaluation and Envisioning
I
n the context of a periodic evalua on
of the SPCSA (Salesian Provincial
Council of South Asia), it was thought
appropriate, on this occasion, to also
do a Visioning exercise for Salesians of
Don Bosco, India.
SPCSA is a body, led by Rev. Fr Maria
Arokiam Kanaga, Regional Councillor,
which brings together 11 Provinces as
one body for common orienta ons and
ini a ves in the following areas viz.
Educa on, Youth Anima on, Mission,
Communica on and Forma on. Each of
these areas func ons with a Network
Head. The concept of Network means
the Network Head collaborates, Intra-
Network as well as Inter-Network, with
the various relevant cons tuencies.
Also, the Network Heads interface
with the Province Commission Heads
and members to plan and implement
programmes and projects within the
dierent Provinces.

complete the Evalua on and Visioning
exercise, eec ve February 2016.
Looking at the enormity of the exercise
and its significance, a detailed proposal
was drawn up. The Visioning for Salesians
of Don Bosco, India would be done
concurrently with the Evalua on of SPCSA.
The objec ves of the Visioning exercise
were to understand the necessary
orienta ons and possible goals to be

adopted in the context of the Salesian
iden ty, for Salesian India. This would
include understanding the current
percep ons of who should the Salesians
be serving (target group), the Services
currently being oered, any new Services
which would need to be oered, and
whether a Change in Mindset is required
to eect a greater impact.
The SPCSA evalua on would look
at the role expected of the SPCSA,
its interac ons with the Province
Commissions, the Strategic focus
needed, the Professionalism required
in its structure, processes, people
and communica on.
The Overall Process of this exercise
included the following stages:
a. In-Depth Interviews with the
Provincials and Network Heads. These
in-depth interviews covered both the
Envisioning for Salesian India and the
SPCSA Evalua on.
b. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
were also conducted among dierent
cons tuencies viz. Youth, Parents,
Parishioners, Alumni, Faculty, and Sta
across all Provinces. The objec ve of
these FGDs was to understand the
percep ons and expecta ons of Salesians
among the beneficiaries and the people
whom the Salesians work with.
c. Based on the output of the FGDs,

"Envisioning" part of the exercise
were created to be answered by the
respec ve cons tuencies viz. Salesians,
Youth, Parents, Parishioners, Alumni,
Faculty and Sta.
d. Based on the output of the in-depth
Interviews, a Ques onnaire was prepared
for the SPCSA Evalua on, to be answered
by the relevant Salesians.
The total number of responses (filled
ques onnaires) received to date is 6056.
e. These responses were analysed,
and a Strategic Plan is in the process of
being prepared, and will be presented
to the Rector Major and his team on
March 1, 2017.
The learnings from such an exercise can
be put into three buckets :
a. A be er understanding of the Salesian
Iden ty
b. Drawing up a Strategic focus for the
Salesian Mission
c. Understanding how to enhance the
eciency and eec veness of people,
structure, processes et al to progressively
implement the Salesian Mission.
This exercise required an "outside-in"
and "inside-out" mindset. The Salesians
were willing to understand the percep ons
which they have of themselves, as well as
the percep ons of the people whom they
serve and work with.
They were willing to par cipate in a
host of workshops which enabled
them to understand the environment
through Scenario Planning, and
drawing up priori es through the use
of various templates like the Four
Ac ons framework and the Ac on
Priority Matrix.
The exercise acted as an
enabler, which made the Salesians
experience being par cipants in
an all India process, as well as
facilitated among Salesians a sense
of belonging not just to a Province, but to
an All India body.
But most of all, it made the Salesians
reflect on who they are, what is dis nct
about their charism, and what should be
the focus of their Mission.
The Salesians of Don Bosco aptly
summarised the outcome of this exercise
by sta ng that it was "elaborate and
comprehensive", "brought about self-
awareness collec vely as SDB India and
as a Province" and finally, "would pave
the way for concrete future plans."

willingly turned over their lives to Him
as priests and religious sisters. They
reflect the light of Christ to all people,
as they become one with God, through
the vows of Poverty, Chas ty and
Obedience that they take. These vows

Promises, something we too are called
to do. The fragrance of flowers spreads
only in the direc on of the wind, but
the goodness of consecrated persons
spreads in all direc ons. This, I believe,
is possible because God sends His
Angels to accompany them, to watch
over them, to guide them, 24x7, 365
days of the year. The rela onship of a
Consecrated Person with God entails
being sent out into the world as
Prophets of His Word and as Witnesses
of His Love.
'It does not take great people to do
great things. It only takes Consecrated
People.'

Likewise, the

and temporal needs of the people,
thus serving God by serving humanity.
Some of them, as lawyers and social
ac vists, are out there figh ng for
the rights and dignity of the common
man. Those with 'the gi of the gab'
and skilled with the power of the pen,
not only oer meaningful insights
into the faith, but are able to present
convincing and persuasive arguments
of 'How' and 'Why' we are all called
to be 'Leaven' in a materialis c world.
Jesus' domain may have started with
just 12 ordinary men in an obscure
corner of Galilee, but see how far it
has spread in 2000+ years. Yes!! The
Gospel truth does make progress.
Our priests and religious also invite
us to join them in living as 'people in
the world, but not of the world.' With
them as guides, we can, within this
culture of death that prevails, become
agents of change, slowly but surely
transforming that culture from within.
For me, the most eec ve Presence of
Christ in the world are the Consecrated
Persons found serving in far-flung
mission areas, devoid some mes of the
basic ameni es we take for granted.
Especially in areas where the Catholic
faith is threatened on a regular basis,
our Missionaries proclaim Christ boldly,
with their heads held high, through
the very lives they lead, with complete
trust and an unshakable faith in God as
Provider and Nurturer.
According to Pope Francis, "Voca ons
are born in Prayer and from Prayer,
and only through Prayer, can they
persevere and bear fruit." The best gi
we laypeople can oer our Consecrated
People is to thank God for them, and
to intercede on their behalf for His
con nual strength, so that united with
Christ, their lives become a fragrant
oering to the Father. We must also
pray for God's Spirit to allow them
to turn all their ac vity to Christ, so
that they con nue to live out their
Voca on joyfully, wherever they are,
and whatever they may be doing. God
speaks to those who take me to listen,
and He listens to those who take me
to pray. So let's storm Heaven with
Prayers for our Priests and Religious
Sisters, whether serving or re red, that
they may work in the Lord's Vineyard
with open hearts and a willing spirit.
In a world where our young people
are le searching for worthwhile role
models, our Consecrated Persons stand
tall, amidst the debris of a crumbling
value system. This World Day of
Consecrated Life also calls each one of
us to ask ourselves: How is God calling
me to give of myself? How can I know
the deeper joy of service to God and
to others?

An Apostle of Peace
T
he life of Mahatma Gandhi has been a source of
inspiration for people from all over the world.
Gandhi penned his Autobiography to tell the
story of his numerous Experiments with Truth,
especially in the spiritual field which was unknown to the
people of India and the 'civilised' world. His life was so
transparent that he could declare to the whole world that
"My life is my message."
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October
2, 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, as the youngest son of
Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. His refusal to copy the
spelling of a word from his neighbour's slate, the impact
of Shravana Pitribhak Nataka and of Harishchandra on
young Mohandas show his commitment to truth at a tender
age. A er the comple on of his matricula on examina on,
he went to England in 1888 to study Law. During his stay
there, he came in contact with prominent people associated
with London Vegetarian society, Chris an missionaries and
theosophists, and was introduced to major religious texts
of various religions. His stay in London further strengthened
the interreligious approach which he got from his family
and Saurashtra's cultural environment. He passed the
examina ons in 1891, and sailed back home.
He started his legal prac ce in India, but he could not
succeed in the profession. In the mean me, he got an
oer from Dada Abdulla and Company, and sailed to South
Africa in 1893. In South Africa, he had to face the wrath
of racial discrimina on. He was literally thrown out of the
compartment at the Pietermaritzburg railway sta on in

his work, he decided to return to India. But he had to stay in
South Africa for 21 years to fight against racial discrimina on.
He established the Natal Indian Congress Indian Opinion,
Phoenix Se lement and Tolstoy Farm to consolidate the
Indian Community in South Africa. In the wake of the Boer
war and Zulu rebellion, he organised the Ambulance Corps
to nurse and serve the wounded. During his stay in South
Africa, a real metamorphosis of his personality took place,
and that finally paved the way to 'Mahatmaship' later. In
1906, he took the vow of Brahmacharya, and also formulated
his principle of Satyagraha in the same year. He led a series
of struggles on South African soil, including the Long March
ll the passage of the Indian Relief Bill in 1914. He returned
to India in 1915.
He established the Satyagraha Ashram at Kochrab,
Ahmedabad in May 1915. He launched his first Satyagraha
struggle at Champaran in Bihar against the indigo planters. It
was followed by Satyagrahas in Kheda and Ahmedabad mill
workers. His entry in Indian poli cs was marked by Rowla
Satyagraha in 1919. As the leader of the Indian masses, he
led three major na onal movements viz. Non-coopera on
Movement (1922), Salt Satyagraha (1930) and Quit India
Movement (1942). It needs to be emphasized that both
during Rowla Satyagraha and Non-coopera on Movement,
he went to the extent of withdrawing these movements
for the sake of truth and non-violence, despite all-round
opposi on to his principled approach. He also took a non-
compromising stand on the ques on of untouchability, and
went on a fast unto death on the issue of Communal Award
in 1932. Subsequently, his life entered into a new phase,
marked by service to villages that led to the establishment
of Sevagram Ashram at Wardha in 1936. Towards the end
of his life, there was a rare display of life-long Sadhana of
truth and non-violence, which he demonstrated in Noakhali,
Calcu a, Bihar and Delhi. That prompted Lord Mountba en
to describe him as a 'one man army'. It is true that he failed
to prevent the Par on of India. But the fact that India could
retain its historic role as a country of composite culture
remains as a living tes mony to Gandhi's contribu on in the
en re process. It was in the course of his a empt to integrate
the warring communi es that he a ained martyrdom at the
hands of a Hindu fana c. In short, the life of Gandhi was a life
of incessant Sadhana for truth and non-violence and their
applica on in mundane life.

Divine Renovation from
a Maintenance to a Mis-
sional Church
Wrien by Fr James Mallon
In his encyclical on the Church's primary
mission of evangelisa on in the modern
world, Pope Francis says, "My mission
of being in the heart of the people is
not just a part of my life, or a badge I
can take o; it is not an "extra" or just
another moment in life. Instead, it is
something I cannot uproot from my
being without destroying my very self.
I am a mission on this earth; that is the
reason why I am here in this world."
[Evangelii Gaudium - no. 273]
Significantly, it is with this quote
that Fr James Mallon's book, DIVINE
RENOVATION, opens [p 11], as if to
remind the reader at the very outset
that the raison d'tre of our existence
on earth is to strive with Jesus to bring,
each in our own way, the en re world
to the Father in Jesus. Isn't that what
evangelisa on is all about? And yet,
we'd be missing the wood for the trees,
if we were to overlook the fact that more than the need for
evangelisa on among non-Chris ans, the need is the greater
within the Catholic fold itself, which of course is of a piece with
the Lord's command to Francis d'Assisi, the present pope's
namesake and model: "Francis, go rebuild my house, which as
you see is falling into ruin." (p 33) That's where the sagacity of
the text of DIVINE RENOVATION [pp 317 / Rs 300] comes in.
Mallon's disserta on concerns the challenges he faced as
Vicar. His discovery that a frivolous social pas me such as 'card
playing', rather than worship and catechesis, cons tuted the
life of the parish he was called to pastor, and that the use of
church premises for such socialising over and above the need
for catechesis-based ac vity was de rigueur, did give the young
pastor tense moments. That he surmounted the situa on with
steely determina on and succeeded in gaining for community-
centred cateche cal ac vity the place and importance due,
redounds en rely to his credit, his ini a ve and innova veness,
overriding gently, yet firmly, all odds and objec ons.
DIVINE RENOVATION is essen ally about enabling the reader
whether clerical, religious or lay to perceive the status of
one's Chris anness as a sign of a deep understanding of the
Faith as the source and means of salva on. The sub- tle of
the book, 'From a Maintenance to a Missional Parish' applies
very well to India, where the Church could surely take a leaf
from the book, whose contents challenge the reader to bear
in mind that a 'Parish' is not a social club. Mallon enables you
to see at length that there is much more to being Catholic than
indulging in whist drives, jam sessions and the like. Strangely,
on the one hand there is Faith-based emphasis laid by certain
parishes which earn for themselves the 'missional' tag; on the
other, there is a huge pull towards the social circuit with fashion
shows and dance contests that promote vulgarity being given
undue prominence, and fetes and fairs taking up the lion's share
of me and ac vity. All this on huge grounds owned by dioceses
or parishes, with non-Chris ans par cipa ng
as contestants, judges or spectators, all with
li le or no knowledge of Chris an morals and
ethics. O en, fes ve occasions in the life of
the parish and week-long events like the so-
called Youth Week held during the Church's
major liturgical seasons like Advent and Lent,
send out a wrong message, stuck as such
parishes are with the 'maintenance' tag.
Wri en under the influence of head and
heart alike, DIVINE RENOVATION is packed
with stories, ideas and prac cal ini a ves
for creating healthy and vibrant parish
communities. Making readers aware of
their fundamental identity in Christ, the
fresh vision and real-life strategies emerging
from this book both inspire and challenge
parish communitiespastors, co-pastors
and parishionersto rethink their culture,
break free of the status quo and engage every
believer in missionary discipleship. Showing
the way to achieving this ideal, Mallon avers:
"It has been said that Church renewal is
all about the three Hs: hospitality, hymns and homilies." (p
124) Mallon sure knows his onions, for he speaks from the
experience of having spared no pains in devising novel ways
of successfully making members of his congrega on feel
welcome in church, freely encouraging music of all genres
in congrega onal par cipa on, and consciously ensuring
that his homilies, well-prepared and to the point with the
composi on of the congrega on in mind, le his listeners
virtually asking for more.
All in all, what Mallon proves through this book is that
vibrant parish renewal (call it transforma on or renova on
of communi es and individuals) is not merely essen al, but
eminently possible, much of course depending on the dynamism
of the Parish Priest, the coopera on of the parishioners and
the support of the Ordinary of the diocese. And so it is that
Patrick Lencioni, bestselling author of The Five Dysfuncons
of a Team, makes bold to advise: "Buy a copy for yourself, and
another for your pastor" (p 2)! Indeed, what be er me to do
precisely that than now, pu ng into eect Mallon's DIVINE
RENOVATION [published by ST PAUL'S], se ng the ball rolling
by way of turning our respec ve parishes from 'maintenance'

The Journey to Priesthood
W
hen the Bollywood movie Ghulam, starring
Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee released in
1998, it changed one man's course of life.
Fr Ajay Shelke SDB (33) had just appeared
for his standard 10 exams, while at a Salesian boarding in
Ahmednagar. He was invited by a priest to pursue further
studies at the Don Bosco Junior college in Lonavla.
Ajay Shelke found the proposi on alluring; not the studies,
but what was on oer in Aamir Khan's famous song, 'Aa
Kya KhandalaLonavle
Mein Chikki Khayenge'
(Will you come to
Khandala? We'll eat chikki
in Lonavla). He thought
to himself, "I have never
gone beyond my village
in Ahmednagar. If I go to
Lonavla, at least I will get
to see Aamir Khan and
Rani Mukherjee."
So he reached Lonavla,
excitedly, but what he saw
next threw him into a zzy.
"I never saw the actors,
but I saw lots of children
playing on les on the
ground. And I saw huge
grounds, and I became
crazy. Then the actors and actress' craze went, and my focus
was only on games. Every year, I said, "Let me experience
one year, let me experience one year, and that experience
brought me to priesthood. Today, as a priest, I am very happy
that God has called me to the Don Bosco way," Fr Shelke said.
While Don Bosco ins tu ons are synonymous with sport,
Fr Mylin Noronha SDB (29) confesses, "I was always bad at
sports; I s ll am bad at sports." But the plethora of other
ac vi es on oer was most appealing. "I was tone deaf
before I joined Don Bosco Lonavla. I learnt to play the
piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet and drums. I was even
part of the band and by the end, I was in-charge of the
band," Fr Noronha said.

we started observing, improvising to the point that I can't call
myself an ar st today, but I can confidently do artwork."
Fr Noronha a ributes his growth to the personal a en on
he received throughout his forma on, from the senior
priests he was entrusted to. "Outside, in the secular world,
it would not happen. The follow-up we received has made a
dierence. Priests and brothers in-charge saw the poten al
in us, and trained us
thoroughly," he said.
"It took a long me

not gone to a regular
college, and have not
lived their lifestyle.
But when we see
the youth coming
to us, sharing their
problems at home,
their problems with
friends, trea ng us
like friends, pulling
our legs, laughing
and joking with us,
that's when we are
grateful to Don Bosco for the kind of training we receive,"
Fr Noronha added.
When in class 10, he was asked by a Salesian voca on
promoter to ck three careers from a wide variety of op ons,
he picked 'priest' as his third and last choice.
The voca on promoter followed up, and the then
rebellious teenager, Mylin Noronha decided to join the Don
Bosco boarding. "I went merely to get freedom from my
family, and I ended up taking a vow of priesthood," he smiles.
Fr Noronha and his companion for 13 years, Fr Shaun
D'Lima SDB (29) have a lot in common. Father D'Lima
also left home in Mumbai as a rebellious youngster,
seeking the adventures of a Salesian boarding life, and
he was not disappointed.
"In class seven, I had a ended a Salesian camp, and
I loved the hikes, walks, games. So I wanted to join," Fr
D'Lima said. He completed class 11 and 12 at the Lonavla

 boarding. Two years of noviate followed, where he was
introduced to the life of the Salesians. He then completed
a Bachelor in Philosophy degree at the Salesian Instute of
Philosophy in Nashik. In his three years of praccal training
called 'Regency', he lived and worked like the Salesians at
the instute he was placed at. Four years of theology at the
Papal seminary in Pune completed his formaon studies.
While his journey to priesthood may seem long to many, to
him, it was a memorable adventure. At the end of each year,
when he had to take a decision if he wanted to connue or
return home, he would say to himself, "Let me experience
this for one more year."
"Once I was almost out of seminary life as I was very
naughty. My father was called. But when he saw me
pleading with the superior there that I didn't want to go
(home), that day, I saw my father cry. I have never seen him
cry. He asked the priest to give me a second chance. And to
see my father support me at something that I really wanted,
created great feelings in me. I didn't want that adventure to
go. I was enjoying seminary life and the opportunies we
get there. I didn't want to get back to the mundane family
life, " Fr D'Lima said.
Not all priests walk into the unknown. While in class three,
Fr Vishal Lopes SDB (29), on seeing a bishop in his village,
ran to his mother and whispered in her ear, "Please tell the
bishop, I want to be a priest." His mum replied, "You say it
yourself," and before she could finish, he was tugging at the
bishop's cassock, saying, "I want to be a priest."

Fr Lopes pursued his childhood desire, and aer class 12,
joined the Salesians. He was the 68th priest to be ordained
from his parish, Holy Spirit in Nandakhal, Vasai.
"Many said to me you will never complete your priestly
studies. From school and college days, I was a notorious
fellow. I was always suspended. And now teachers are
awestruckhow did you become a priest?" Fr Lopes said.
"One thing that has kept me faithful is the prayers of
my parents. In my village, priesthood is a privilege. At my
Ordinaon, many were wishing my parents more than me,
that they are the parents of a priest. So I would like to call
parents to start praying for their sons and daughters to join
religious life."
Fr Ajay D'Monte SDB (30), like Father Lopes, is the son of
a farmer from Vasai. "My father is a very poor farmer. He
had taken a loan. And at the same me, I felt called to join
the Salesians. But my father didn't tell me even once that I
was needed to help him out. He let me go. And I enjoyed my
studies and my life with the Salesians," Fr D'Monte said.
"I always felt that coming from a poor family, I did not do
jusce to my family. Maybe I could have helped them out
more. My friends have made big bungalows. We are sll the
same. But today, my dad is the proud father of a priest."
"My villagers gave me the biggest felicitaon aer my
ordinaon. I am the first priest in my village - Agashi. My
father says, "Naam kamaya" (You earned a name). If I had
to work outside, I could have built a big house for them, but
my parents are not regreng. Even among their friends, they
are proud, as their colleagues feel their son is a priest; what
about our son?"
Today, Fr D'Monte may be content, but during his years
of formaon, he had his moments of trepidaon. He recalls
an incident during his assignment to care for village kids.
Sprawled on the floor, he was cung a newspaper with
them, when he got a call from an old classmate. The friend
spoke about his high paying job in America.
When he hung up, Fr D'Monte felt weighed down with a
big queson: "What am I doing with my life? I must decide."
He looked at the children around him, "That's when I had
the strongest feeling and I said to myself, 'I will give my life to
these kids'. The love that I received from them touched and
transformed me. They became so aached to me, they cried
when I was leaving."
Now, there was no looking back. Just before his Ordinaon,
Fr D'Monte asked his mother, like Don Bosco asked his Mama
Margaret, "What kind of a priest do you want me to be?" She
said, "Be holy."
The Salesians of the Mumbai province have been blessed
with these five new priests, who received the Sacrament of
Holy Orders (Priesthood) in December 2016. They all joined
young, and grew strong, in academics, acvies, sports
and above all in loving kindness, to the point of dedicang

What is common between veteran Bollywood film makers
Mahesh Bha , Anand Patwardhan and famous actor Akshay
Kumar? They are all alumni of the reputed Don Bosco High
School at Matunga, Mumbai. While the trio took the mass
medium to greater heights in their own right to entertain
and drive home a lesson or two, their mentors, known
as the Salesian priests of the Catholic Church, have also
started reaching out to the masses through the medium of
the films.
The second annual edi on of the Don Bosco Youth Film
Fes val of India will screen 24 short films (under 30 minutes
dura on) at 90 venues across 22 states in the country on
January 28 and 29. The short films revolve around the
theme of youth, their issues and concerns and nation
building. "The mega event is to celebrate the spirit of youth,
and we are touched with the overwhelming response
from across the country from all faiths and communi es,
irrespective of caste, creed, colour or language," said
Salesian Fr Joaquim Fernandes, a delegate from Boscom
South Asia, the communica on wing. While last year, the

one-day event screened 20 short films across 55 loca ons
in 19 states and a racted over 6 lakh viewers, this year, the
organisers expect 8-10 lakh viewers. The entry is free at
all venues.
This film festival is a unique attempt to showcase the

they go through, and their issues and concerns are
highlighted in these short films. "Film is a powerful medium
that can communicate, educate, elevate and inspire the
young viewers," said Fr Harris Pakkam, SDB, director of
the Film Festival. The theme of the Film Festival is the

way, narra ng stories of young people who face challenges

New priests visit Shelter Don

Lopesblessed Shelter Don Bosco with a visit on January
12. They celebrated the Holy Eucharist for the inten ons
of the house. Fr Lopes was the main celebrant. Fr D'Lima,
in his homily, shared the experience of his journey towards
priesthood. He encouraged all to be on fire with the spirit of
the merciful Jesus and work towards building the kingdom
of God.
The Rector, Fr Gregory D'Almeida, in his thanksgiving
address, encouraged the new priests to sustain their ini al
fervour and enthusiasm throughout their life as priests of
God. On behalf of all the newly ordained priests, Fr D'Monte
expressed his gra tude to the community.

Christian Unity Prayer Service
at IC Church, Borivli
On the occasion of the Christian Unity Octave being
celebrated by the Catholic Church worldwide, I C Church,
Borivli organised a Prayer Service in the Pope Paul VI Hall
on Sunday, January 22, 2017, to which the priests of the
Mainline Reforma on churches and Pastors of the New Life
Movements lying within the jurisdic on of the parish were
invited to par cipate.
The theme chosen for the Prayer Service was: 'Everything
has become new' (2 Cor 5:17) 'being born in the Spirit' (Jn
3:8) which was in sync with the theme of the parish for the
year 'Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges'.
The Prayer Service opened with a praise and worship
session, prayerfully led by the English Prayer Group of I C
Church, invoking the power of the Holy Spirit.
Fr Barthol Barretto Parish Priest and Bishop-Elect
welcomed the gathering and introduced Fr Jude Ferreira
the Resource Person. Fr Jude of St Anthony Church, Vakola,
an eminent Bible Scholar and Faculty in the Ministry of the
Word programme proclaimed the Word of God and shared
his reflec ons on the above-men oned theme.
Being a 'new' crea on through the merits of the Passion,
death and Resurrec on of Jesus, Fr Jude explained what
it meant to be part of the 'old' creationin which sin
contaminated all human beings. He also stressed that

whatever be one's calling, being bap sed, we should all be
aware of the shadow of the Cross in our lives and strive
to be faithful to one's callingwhether to the priesthood,
religious life or the married life. Fr Jude explained that

Therea er, intercessory prayers were made based on the
theme and on Jesus' prayer in Jn 18:20-21, 'that they may
all be one' - wherein pastors of the Pentecostal Church
also par cipated.
Fr Vincent Barboza, who is ac vely involved in Apologe cs
and in reaching out to the Pentecostal Churches, presently
Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Forsaken Parish, Malvani
Colony, led the closing prayer.
Exhibitions etc at St Isabel
St Isabel's School at Mazagaon, a reputed educational
institution, celebrated the commencement of its 130 th
Anniversary [Founders' Day - October 9]. The Board of
Trustees, Headmistress of the Pre-Primary/Primary and
Secondary Sections and the Staff put in much dedicated
eort to organise an even ul fes ve season for students,
sta and employees.
An inter-School Vernacular Singing Programme was
staged in the central compound with a festive 'Best Of
Waste' exhibi on in the hall alongside. About 150 student
participants from six schools took part [St Agnes, Gloria
Convent, St Isabel, St Mary's SSC Sec on, Regina Pacis and
Rosary School]. Every student from these schools performed
angelically, ushering in the true spirit of the birth of Infant
Jesus on Christmas Day. Student spectators, including
Principals and Teaching Sta who accompanied them, as
well as the School Trustees and their special guests, warmly
applauded each performance. Refreshments were served
to all participants. The Management hosted a delicious
Christmas lunch for guest Principals, Teachers and Staff
and employees of St Isabel's therea er. Proceeds from the
exhibi on were donated to charity.
St Isabel's celebrated the Pre-Primary and Primary Annual
Day on December 16, and the Secondary Sec on Annual Day
on December 17. Our Headmistresses always invite ex-students
who are doing well in their careers to grace these func ons
as Chief Guests, and give away the numerous scholarships to
deserving proud students. On December 21, an inter-School
'Best of Waste' Christmas Symbol Contest was held. The
innova ve well designed Crib and Christmas Tree, assembled
by some teachers and students of St Isabel's, was judged and
awarded the First Prize. Christmas Tree celebrations for all
students, staff and employees were held on December 22,
when everybody was gifted a sumptuous box of Cadbury
chocolates by Santa Claus. The Headmistresses organised the
Annual Athle c Meet for students and sta on January 6, 2017
at St Xavier's Grounds, Parel.
CIC's interactive session with
political party reps
Fr Felix D'Souza, the Ecclesias cal advisor of 'Church in the
City' (CIC), welcomed the representa ves of 100 parishes to
the interac ve session with poli cal party spokespersons,
on January 20, 2017 at Salva on Church, Dadar. They had
gathered to know, from the poli cal par es, the roadmap
to make Mumbai a world class city. Their concerns were:
proper roadways, good transport system, clear drinking
water, be er educa onal system, hygienic living condi ons,
good healthcare system etc.
The MNS leader, Mr Sandeep Deshpande, said that the
BMC budget must be a major concern, wherein the ci zens
get their requirements. He talked about a transparent
system in the Corporation's functioning. The Congress
spokesperson, Mr Charansingh Sapra, said if the party is
elected to power, it would take care of migrants, proper
water distribution, food joints at reasonable cost, etc.
The BJP spokesperson, Mr Balchandra Shirsat, echoed the
party's policy that all transac ons should be digital to cut
down on corrup on and ineciency.
The NGOs' representa ves were given a chance to present
their charter of demands. AGNI's representative, Shyama
Kulkarni, highlighted the deplorable state of the city markets,
as well as the deteriora ng roads and transport system in the
city. The NGO, Borivli-Dahisar Jagruk Nagrik Manch, spoke
about the common minimum programme for all the poli cal
par es to ensure sustainable development in Mumbai.
Shailesh Gandhi opined that OPEN SPACES must not be
leased to any one, but instead should be maintained from
the BMC's own funds. Other NGOs said that greater a en on
must be given to make livable conditions for the citizens.
On behalf of CIC, Willie Shirsat men oned that once the
elec ons are over, the CIC would regularly hold an "audit"
of work done relating to the promises made prior to
elec ons. Ms Celine Patel proposed the vote of thanks.

A training programme for Vocation Promoters was
organised by Fr Godwin Fernandes (Diocesan Vocation
Director) and his team on January 12, 2017 at Salvation
Church, Dadar. 65 priests, religious and brothers were
present for this programme. The resource persons were
Bishop John Rodrigues and Fr Brian Moras, sdb.
The session started with the ligh ng of the lamp, followed
by meaningful ac on songs and prayer. Fr Brian started o by
creatively presenting the situation of the Christian families
and society today. He gave three watchwords: 1) Grow: in
number and in qualitythus becoming the salt of the earth.

Church expresses concern
about increasing child abuse
offences
A 38-year-old man has confessed to sexually assaulting as
many as 500 kids, mostly girls, in northern India, stunning
the nation and kicking off a discussion on child abuse.
Sunil Rastogi, who was arrested on Jan. 15 in New
Delhi, confessed to sexually assaulting hundreds of
children aged 7-10 years, over a period of 12 years
in the neighbouring states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh
and Uttarakhand.
Apart from sexually assaulting the children, Rastogi
also claimed to have attempted to abuse about 2,500
children in the region, police said.
Child abuse in India has been rising these past few
years. According to data from the Na onal Crime Records
Bureau, there were nearly 58,224 cases of child abuse in
2013, as compared to 38,172 in 2012, and 33,052 in 2011.

The Act, which was brought into force in 2012, aims to
protect children from sexual assault, sexual harassment

Joseph said that the incident was "sickening," adding
that the issue has been raised repeatedly, but nothing
concrete has been done on the ground to prevent it.
"Child abuse is a priority issue. People are aware, but
they are not focusing on it. We need parents to come out
and speak against it," she said.
Joseph said that they rescued 150 children who were
victims of human trafficking last year in the northeast
Indian city of Darjeeling.

Chavanod Sister Lucy Kurien, who works with the
victims of child abuse through her organisation, 'Maher',
told ucanews.com that sometimes a child who undergoes
such trauma is scarred for life. It has a hugely negative
effect on their mental health and well-being.
"Girls who go through this experience develop a fear
of men, and start hating them. The victims also tend to
emotionally withdraw and do not open up easily," said
Sr Kurien.

Archbishop Bernard Moras Bengaluru called upon Catholic
youth on Jan 18 to participate more in church activities,
besides giving a voice to the voiceless in society.
Speaking after inaugurating the 10 th National Youth
Conven on, Archbishop Moras said these days, Chris an
youth are seen everywhere, except in liturgical ac vi es.
The Catholic Conference of Bishops in India (CBCI)
organises the Youth Conven on every three years, and this
year, it was held at Mangaluru. The conven on deliberated
on issues like environment, harmony and peace in society
and leadership. The participants also discussed about
the means of networking with organisations that share
similar concerns.

Lawyer nuns, priests pledge to
work for poor
Responding to the invita on of Streevani and Mon ort Social
Ins tute, 33 lawyers (women and men Religious, as well as
diocesan priests) came together at Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth
(JDV), Pune, from January 13-15, to reflect on a 'Prophetic
Response to the Pursuit of Jus ce.'
"Adopt a rights-based approach as NGO lawyering is a space
away from commercial lawyering. The law can be used to bring
about social transformation," said advocate Flavia Agnes, a
resource person.
The resource persons encouraged the par cipants to make
faith-based responses to the most vulnerable in India.
Pune-based 'Streevani', (the voice of women) and
Hyderabad-based Montfort Social Institute organised
the event.
Fr M.T. Joseph and Jesuit Fr P.D. Mathew encouraged
the lawyers to use the Constitution to enforce equality
and rights.
"The monolithic idea of India siding with the
corporates against the tribals and poor has generated
a discourse that silences people in our so-called
democracy," said Fr M.T. Joseph. "The narratives used
are cleverly manipulated to substantiate the discourse
on democracy and nationalism. The monopoly of one
party, supported by business, creates an environment of
silence and fear by using intimidating tactics to promote
the idea of 'Nation', 'nationalism', and patriotism,"
he added.
"Fear and silencing is managed by professionals. To
counter this, we need to build a strong support system
to become pressure groups using symbolic power. Power
can be broken by resistance. Power thrives when spaces
of resistance are reduced. Enlarge spaces of resistance.
Support persons who are attacked because of their
resistance. Create spaces of resistance within ourselves and
in society," the priest said.
The sharing of stories by the par cipants reinforced the
need for building solidarity among lawyers who are nuns,
brothers and priests. The group felt that they had much to
learn and share with each other for solidarity and support.
In the final session, while reviewing and evaluating the
meeting, the participants expressed the need to form an
inclusive Forum of Lawyers with men. So far, there has been
a Forum of Religious Women Lawyers who have had regular
mee ngs over the nine years of their existence.

Blood ecumenism
In Orissa, "ecumenism among Christians is a living reality,
because it is a blood ecumenism," said Msgr John Barwa,
Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, intervening in the
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. He explained that
it was the "circumstances", that is, the anti-Christian
pogrom of 2008, "to make us united and ecumenical and
to fight for peace and mutual development."
Msgr Barwa continued: "The horrific anti-Christian
violence united us all as Christians, followers of Jesus
Christ. Our persecutors failed to distinguish between
denominations; they only knew that we belong to Jesus,
we love Him, we are ready to die for Him."
The archbishop argued that the Hindu radicals targeted
the Christian community in Orissa, and in particular
those of Kandhamal district, because "our faith is visible,
and therefore the extremists have killed our people ...
burned our churches and homes. The Cross of Christ was
proof that united us. This is ecumenism for us, and we,
His people, are proud of our ecumenical love, solidarity,
unity and peace."

Jesus' preaching. But another answer is that they followed
the Lord, because the Father always leads us to His Son.
Jesus was moved by these people he saw as sheep
without a shepherd, Pope Francis said, these people who
are being led to him by the Holy Spirit. "May the Lord give
us the grace to know how to discern what is going on in our
hearts, and to choose the right path upon which the Father
draws us to Jesus."

"MLK wanted to renew, not
divide the Church"
Pope Francis has told Lutheran pilgrims from Finland that
Mar n Luther's inten on 500 years ago "was to renew the
Church, not divide Her."
The Pope was speaking to a delegation of pilgrims led
by the Lutheran Archbishop Kari Makinen of Turku. Their
annual visit takes place during the Week of Prayer for
Chris an Unity.
In his address, Pope recalled his visit to Sweden
last October, marking 500 years since the start of the
Reforma on, saying it was a "significant step" that "gave us
courage" for the ecumenical journey ahead.
"This joint commemoration of the Reformation was
important on both the human and theological-spiritual
levels," he said. "After 50 years of official ecumenical
dialogue between Catholics and Lutherans, we have
succeeded in clearly ar cula ng points of view which today
we agree on. For this, we are grateful."
"At the same me, we keep alive in our hearts sincere
contri on for our faults," the Pope said. "In this spirit, we
recalled in Lund that the intention of Martin Luther 500
years ago was to renew the Church, not divide Her. "The
gathering there gave us the courage and strength, in our
Lord Jesus Christ, to look ahead to the ecumenical journey
that we are called to walk together," he said.
The materials for the week, published by the Pon fical
Council for Promoting Christian Unity, say that, after 50
years of dialogue, "Catholics are now able to hear Luther's
challenge for the Church of today, recognising him as a
'witness to the Gospel'". Germany's Catholic bishops praised
Luther as a "Gospel witness and teacher of the faith" in a

World Youth Day 2019
Archbishop Jos Domingo Ulloa Mendieta of Panama
ocially announced the dates of the next World Youth Day,
which is set to take place in January, rather than July as is
usual, due to the weather.
Speaking directly to youth, Ulloa said, "You are the true
protagonists of this World Youth Day. Panama awaits you
with an open heart and with open arms to share the faith,
to feel that you are the Church!"
In a news conference a er the announcement of Panama
as the next loca on was made, the country's bishops said
the decision is a reflec on of the Pope's a en on to the
peripheries, and voiced their hope to be a "bridge" for those
who come from all con nents. "I think that it will be an
occasion for revitalisa on of the Church in general, and for
the youth in par cular not just from Panama, but from
Central America and all of La n America," Cardinal Jos Luis
Lacunza Maestrojun of David told CNA July 31.
Panama, he said, will be an opportunity for a
demographically young Latin America to "charge their

location, Panama serves as "a bridge" connecting North,

Takayama Ukon - 'Samurai of
Christ' - to be beatified
The solemn ceremony of bea fica on of Justo Takayama
Ukon (1552-1615), the 'Samurai of Christ', a person dear to
the Japanese Church, will be held on February 7 in Osaka.
This was announced by Bishop Isao Kikuchi, SVD, head of
the Diocese of Niigata and President of Caritas Japan. Pope
Francis signed the decree of bea fica on in January 2016,
and the Japanese Church has been preparing for the event
for a long year, asking for the ceremony to be celebrated
on Japanese soil. Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the
Congrega on for the Causes of Saints will preside over the
celebra on which will be broadcast live on TV in Japan.
Among the many saints in the history of the Church in the
Land of the Rising Sun (42 saints and 393 blessed, including
European missionaries), all martyrs killed "in odium fidei"
during several waves of persecu on, the case of Takayama
is a special figure: he is in fact, a layman, a politician, a
soldier (he was a feudatory and samurai), who was not
killed, but chose the path of following Christ, poor, obedient
and crucified. Ukon gave up a social posi on of high rank
and wealth, in order to remain faithful to Christ and to
the Gospel.

Born into a family of landowners, Ukon converted to
Chris anity at the age of 12, coming into contact with Jesuit
missionaries, following the footsteps of his father. The
Gospel was introduced in Japan by the Jesuit Francis Xavier
in 1549, and had quickly spread. When shogun Toyotomi
Hideyoshi took power and prohibited the practice of
Chris anity, all the great feudal lords accepted the measure,
but not Ukon. He lost his proper es, his posi on, his social
status, honour and respectability. He was a wanderer, forced
into exile. With 300 other Japanese Chris ans, he fled to
Manila where, just forty days a er his arrival, he fell ill and
died on February 4, 1615.

Centennial of Fatima
apparition celebrated
A statue of Our Lady of Fatima blessed by Pope Francis
started its Asian pilgrimage with Hong Kong as its first stop
to celebrate the centennial of the Marian apparition in
Portugal. Pope Francis blessed six Centennial Pilgrim Statues
of Our Lady of Fatima at the Vatican on Jan. 11, before
sending them on tour in six con nents. Hong Kong is the
first place in the world where a statue landed.
On Jan. 16, more than 1,000 Catholics packed St Teresa
Church for a special Mass, followed by an overnight
adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. "It is a good time
to re-proclaim Fatima's message about world peace and
conversion, along with the pastoral direc on of Hong Kong
Diocese," said Fr Dominic Chan, vicar general.
"Cardinal John Tong Hon of Hong Kong has decided to
adopt marriage and family as the pastoral direction for
this year," said Fr Chan, who is also parish priest of the
Immaculate Concep on Cathedral which hosted the statue.
Louis Kwan, a member of the Legion of Mary, said his first
impression of the Our Lady of Fa ma were the messages
associated with the apparition. "I understand they were
related to repentance and prayer. Although the messages
were 100 years ago, they are s ll relevant today," Kwan said.
The Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children
in Fa ma, Portugal in 1917, and told them three prophecies:
of hell, the consecra on of Russia and the death of a Pope
and other religious figures. The statue of Our Lady will
con nue its journey to the Philippines at the end of January.

Drs Rui and Armida Fernandez lost their only child, Romila,
to cancer. This tragedy spurred the indefatigable Armida
to launch a new ini a ve, 'Romila Pallia ve Care', through
SNEHA. This centre seeks to address the needs of homebound
cancer pa ents, en rely free of cost. 'Romila Pallia ve Care'
will be launched on January 27, 2017 and will be opera ng
from the premises of Holy Family Hospital, Bandra. The
team will consist of a doctor, nurse and counsellor; it will
be supported by a team of volunteers. Some of the services
provided would be providing treatment op ons, assis ng in
pain relief, providing counselling and emo onal support to
the pa ent and his/her caregivers, providing a reference point
for services such as physiotherapy and legal aid, assis ng in
running errands, reading to the pa ent.

A Delightful Senior Citizens
Day Out
Sir, The DCCW had organised a Fellowship Mission Visit
on Saturday, November 12, 2016 to the St Joseph's
Aged Home, recently built in very tranquil surroundings
near Vikramgad, a village in Palghar. The trip was well
organised, keeping all our 50 seniors busy with dierent
kinds of ac vi es, which included the Home's residents,
who joined in the fun-filled games.
Senior Ci zens from dierent parishes of Mumbai joined
together at St Andrew's Church in Bandra - around 50,
including couples and singles. They le at 8 am by bus to
Vikramgad. Many were picked up at dierent points during
the exci ng journey, and they reached St Joseph's Home at
around 10:30 am.
The journey started with prayers, followed by breakfast
served in the bus. On the way to Wada, we had to
introduce ourselves, so we could get to know one another,

also enjoying the scenic beauty on the way. Many of us
became good friends.
The best thing about the place is the clean air, as
compared to the polluted air of Mumbai. The facilities
provided to the residents are excellent; the rooms are well
furnished and there is no restriction on personal items
like TVs, computers, mobile phones, etc. The charges for
all this are nominal, since it includes full board, house-
keeping and laundry. All the residents I met were very
happy, and did not seem to miss their folks or their original
homes. This is probably due to the clean surroundings,
coupled with the sisters' loving care. The layout of the
home is well designed, secure, and it has a pre y balcony
facing a flowing stream. There is also a beau ful Chapel
within the premises. I would definitely recommend it to
any one looking for a place for their aged rela ves.
Hats off to Phil Fernandes, the former President of
DCCW, and her dedicated team of organisers who managed
the entire outing, looking into every minute detail from
boarding the buses to returning home. They planned
games where winners were awarded useful gi s. They also
arranged a dona on cheque of Rs 50,000/- towards funds
for comple on of building of the first floor, and hope people
will monetarily help to complete this project.
Sr Sebi, in charge of the Home, welcomed those
interested to stay overnight or for a few days. She
said this place can be used as a Resort or a Holiday
Home for relatives or friends to enjoy the surrounding
beauty. Charges would be Rs 600 per person for food and
accommoda on. Those interested may contact Sr Geeta on

the Vasai diocese has visited this Home, which is under

Seaside Cemetery, Bandra
Sir, Seaside Cemetery, Bandra is facing illegal and unauthorised
encroachment from slum dwellers. Along the wall, shanty huts
existed before. Now, more are erected, rising one storey above
the wall. The drainage and sewage waste is flowing into the
Cemetery complex. The Management has lodged a complaint
with the BMC, but no ac on has been taken as yet. An online
complaint has also been sent to the Asst Commissioner. The
Corporator of the area, a Catholic, is aware of this nuisance.
In spite of all these complaints, the BMC has not shown any
concern to the ci zens' demands.
