LESSONSUMMARY/OVERVIEW

Thislessonwillbefocusedaroundputtingpovertyintoperspectiveandwillprovidestudents
withtheopportunitytoreflectonwhatwehavediscussedaboutpovertyinthepastfewdays.
Thislessonofferstimeforstudentstoworkindependentlytocompletetheirreflectionpapers
theystartedthedaybefore.Then,wewillgetbacktogetherasaclassandhaveadiscussion
aboutwhatstudentswroteandreflectedon.Then,Iwillconductanexperimentthatwillallow
studentstoseeandfeelfirsthandaboutwhatimpoverishedchildrengothrough.

OBJECTIVES

SWBATconstructareflectionpaperbasedupontheirlearningofpovertystatistics,thereality
ofdaytodayexpenses,andtheonlinesimulationfromthepreviousday.

SWBATputthemselvesintotheshoesofchildrenlivinginpovertywhilebeingrespectfuland
keepinganopenmind.

SWBATengageinclassdiscussionandtakeintoconsiderationthefeelingsoftheirclassmates
(becausetherearemorepeoplethanyouknowlivinginpovertyandtheycouldbeintheseat
rightnexttoyou!)

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

ToensurethatmystudentshavemettheobjectiveIwillendtheexperimentwithaseriesof
questionsthatwillgetmystudentsthinkingdeeperandmoremeaningfullyintotherealityof
povertyandhomelessness.Sincemylessononthisdayconsistsmostlyofanexperimenttoget
themthinking,Iwillgaugewhattheyhavelearnedbythequalityandthoughtfulnessoftheir
responsesduringtheclassdiscussion.Thisexperimentshouldbeverymovingandopentheir
eyes.Oncethediscussionisover,Iwillshowstudentsavideoaboutimpoverishedyoungpeople
sharingtheirstoriesandhardships.Whenthevideoends,Iwilltellstudentstheywillbewriting
apaperinournextclassmeeting.Studentswillbeinstructedtogohomeandsimplythinkabout
theexperimentandvideotodayandjotdownnotesbaseduponhowitmadethemfeel.
