N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Tarryn OMahoney Date of Activity: 4/6/17 Faculty name: Darlene Lacroix

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

I attended a pediatric advanced life support (PALS) class where we learned about what to do in

scenarios where children were about to be or were currently in respiratory or cardiac arrest. We

learned what steps to take and what common treatments are for these scenarios. The class used a

combination of methods of teaching, including videos, practicing on mannequins, and the use of

questions throughout to ensure we were understanding the material.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This was held at Eclipse CPR, and the length of the activity was 6 hours, however I stayed an

additional 20 minutes to finish my post-test. There was also an additional pre-test which took an

hour.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience was very valuable to me because it pertained to the specialty of nursing that I

want to pursue. I feel like I can apply this information to my nursing practice, and this has given

me some confidence in my decision to pursue pediatric or neonatal nursing. Especially since we

do not learn about pediatrics in the context of an intensive care unit in class, this helped me feel

better prepared for my future.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend this experience in the future because I learned so much in this class. The

teacher was great at explaining things and making the dense material understandable. A lot of the
material learned in this class was new and things that we do not cover in nursing school, so I

believe it would be beneficial to anyone wanting to go into pediatric nursing. These were all

skills that would be applicable to lots of different types of nursing, since there were cardiac,

respiratory, and shock components. So even if other students are unsure of what kind of nursing

they want to go into, this would still be a beneficial class.
