plethora of cultures and
attitudes, but in general

In the Balinese Hindu religion
there are four stages in life, called
Catur Asrama. To commit to married

life is to move into the second stage
of Grehasta Asrama, or the time for
forming a family. This comes after
Brahmacari Asrama, the stage of
gaining knowledge. The third stage
is Wanaprasta Asrama, or the time
for Hindus to increase their spiritual
consciousness and reduce the desire
for glitz and glamour. The nal stage
is Bhiksuka Asrama, which means
freedom. It is believed that true
happiness will come from the ability
to live without any bonds.
COMMITMENT
& RESPONSIBILITY
In Bali, getting married is not only
about passing on DNA but also
about community ties. The main
reason Balinese Hindu parents push
their children to get married is to
make sure their family continues to
be a part of society. It is more than
just a union between two families;
there will be many responsibilities
that the newlyweds will have to take
over for their parents within their
extended family, the neighborhood
and society.
Another reason why Balinese
Hindus decide to marry is to have
a partner in maintaining the family
heritage. Heritage here refers to
neither property nor any other
earthly materials, but to the family
temple. Houses, businesses and
anything else handed over to
newlyweds by their parents are
merely tools for maintaining the
family temple and following through
with their cultural obligations in the
future.

THE PROPOSAL
After casual talks between the bride
and groom and their parents, the
proposal, or Memandik ceremony,
is conducted the traditional way. A
priest will decide on an appropriate
date for the proposal and wedding
day based on the Balinese calendar.
On the proposal day, the grooms
family will visit the brides house to
talk with her extended family.
They will come bearing offerings
and gifts such as food, clothes and
jewelry to show their enthusiasm
for the wedding. The elders from
both sides will then have a serious
conversation about their family trees,
as well as their visions and aims for
the sacred union. This is also the time
for both families to get to know each
other better.
THE WEDDING
Mungkab Lawang is when the
grooms family will pick up the
bride. This symbolizes respect from
the grooms family to the brides
family, where they ask for permission
from the brides family to let their
daughter devote the rest of her life to
the family of the groom. The eldest
of the grooms family knocks on the
main door of the brides family house
with rhymes that are answered by
the eldest from the brides side. After
legal paperwork has been signed,
the newlyweds pray at the grooms
family temple.
Next comes Medagangdagangan.
Medangan means to sell, and in this
unique ceremony the bride acts as a
seller and the groom acts as a buyer
who wants to buy whatever is being
sold by the bride (usually food). After
the bride sets a base price for the
goods, the groom bargains with her
until they nally agree on a fair price.
This ceremony represents the times in
the same page and must compromise
in order to uphold their vows.
At the end of the Medagang-
dagangan ceremony the groom cuts
a mat held by the bride with a keris
(a Balinese traditional sword). This
represents the consummation of the
marriage and the hope for offspring,
in order to build a complete family.
Finally, the bride and groom pray
again at the grooms family temple
to wish for happiness in their
married life ahead. n

As the sky turned pink, I chose
to sit by the window to admire
the scenery. Not long after, Chef
de Cuisine and Head Chef Alit
Mandala greeted me. In Ju-Ma-Na,
we present French cuisine with a
Japanese twist, he explained. We
use French cooking techniques like
sous vide and incorporate them with
Japanese avor. For instance, our
Angus beef is served with vegetables
cooked teppanyaki style and trufe
sauce.
Ju-Ma-Na also highlights fresh
seafood. Our signature dish is
Seafood Tower that serves crab,
tiger prawn, oyster, clams, lobster
and mussel, Chef Alit continued.

Most of the seafood is imported. As
for the meat, we have Kobe beef, a
top-grade beef from Australia that is
still rare to nd in Bali, and French
duck. To balance the imported
protein, Ju-Ma-Na sources local
vegetables for side dishes. We aim

dishes by combining them with our
imported meat and seafood.

REFINED CUISINE
From Alaskan king crab for an
appetizer to fresh water blue lobster
for the main course, Ju-Ma-Nas
menu sure seems appetizing. If you
want to have a complete experience,
Ju-Ma-Na presents three- to six-
course dinners I opted for the
three-course dinner, and the dishes
were beyond my expectation.
My dinner started with amuse
bouche that was made of smoked
beef with compressed watermelon
and ponzu sauce. As I took a bite,
I began to taste the Japanese twist
within the amuse bouche, and
couldnt wait for more surprising
avors in the following dishes. Next
on the menu was Ama Ebi Tartar for
appetizer. Served with white sauce,
wasabi aioli and ponzu sauce,

the Japanese prawn dish had a
bold avor with miso dressing and
avocado guacamole. It was also
presented in a sophisticated plating
as it was adorned with edible
24-carat gold leaves.
The Obe Beef Tenderloin
followed as the main course.
Served with potato mousseline and
teppanyaki vegetable, this meat dish
was even more delicious with trufe
cream and citrus reduction. The
organic Australian Obe beef was
lush and delicate as it was cooked
to perfection it was beautifully
seared on the outside and pink in
the inside. And just like the dishes
I had previously, the Obe Beef
Tenderloin had a bold Japanese
avor that gave a unique twist.

My three-course dinner had a
sweet ending with Mon Merveilleux
for dessert. The mascarpone passion
cream served with vanilla chantilly
and meringue tuille had a balanced
sweet and sour avor with carrot
and ginger candy as well as slices of
orange and strawberry. It was such
a perfect way to end the night at
Ju-Ma-Na. n

BB: What made you fall in love with
the wedding dcor business?
EW: In 2010, I started to decorate
booths for exhibitions and tourism
events. From there, I jumped into
the wedding dcor business by
providing a photo booth. The
wedding dcor industry is really

interesting because theres always
new ideas that we can turn into
reality and see the result right away.
BB: What is your favorite part of the
job?
EW: Exploring the theme and the
concept has always been my favorite
part of the job. When it comes
to creating a certain atmosphere,

accordance to the desired concept
and theme.
Not only being passionate about
it, I also see a good chance in the
professional wedding industry in
Bali. Every year more and more
couples want to get married here,
making Bali one of the most popular
wedding destinations in the world.In
addition,myprofession as an
architect before makes it even easier
for me to turn my ideas and dream
into reality.
BB: How do you portray the couples
characters in the wedding dcor?
EW: Clients opinion matters, so
we ask their references to ensure
that the pictures I have in mind
are similaror at least close to the
couples expectation. Since words
can be hard to interpret, I prefer to
meet the couples and talk about their
wedding more personally. That way,
I have a better understanding about
their characters and see what their
dream wedding looks like.
Yes, we initially ask for related
information such as the venue,
number of guests, theme, color and
others.Equally important is the
reference picture from the couple so
we can see their expectation for the
decorations. Then we can determine
the price and the details of the
proposal. After we make a deal, we
can proceed with the dcor design
and mock up design for the table
setting, followed by preparation and
execution on the wedding day.
BB: Do you have any favorite
wedding theme?
EW: I nd it hard to answer this
because most of the time I decorate
a venue with my favorite theme. But
I have personal favorite characters
that I like to put as elements there
must be a touch of elegant and
natural elements like crystal, wood
or stone.
BB: What are the challenges in
this business?
EW: The biggest challenge in every
wedding is the end-to-end process.
There are always small changes
until the wedding day comes, so we
need to work fast as a team. The
next challenge is terrain area and
unpredictable weather. Since Bali is
famous for its nature, almost every
wedding is heldoutside and it takes
a solid team to make an outdoor
wedding celebration. Having a
good design is not enough it is the
reliable crews that counts to make the
clients dream wedding come true.
Last but not least, being perfect
is the only choice. The weddingis
a very important moment for every
couple, family and invited guest, so
perfection in details is crucial for
wedding professionals during the
wedding day.
BB: Where do you source the owers
and the ornaments?
EW: We bring both imported and
local owers. Local owers are
sourced from Java and Bali. As for
the imported owers, we source

them from a number of countries that
have high-quality owers.
BB: How do you see the future of the
wedding business in Bali?
EW: Weddings in Bali is such a
promising business. I see a good
future of Balis tourism as well
as its wedding industry because
Bali with its natural beauty makes
couples want to capture their special
moments here.
BB: What are your tips and tricks
for those who want to be a wedding
decorator?
EW: Patience and willingness are
the cores. You have to be willing
to serve every bride and groom
and their families in preparing the
most important day of their lives.
We, wedding vendors, have to be
their best friend to discuss all of
the couples needs. This business
is full of personal touches because
a wedding is very intimate and
personalized for each couple. n

WIJAYA GOES BEACH HOPPING IN
GUNUNGKIDUL
F
or centuries, poets have
been writing poems about
this beautiful coastline.
Musicians also sing a
song about this place.
People come and share stories from
across Indonesia. Im not sure why
Gunungkidul, a region in the south
coast of Yogyakarta, always inicts
a sense of melancholy. Maybe
because of its serenity, the sound
of the waves and the remarkable
view of the horizon. No wonder
the area that was once rather quiet
and unheard of among outsiders
is now a magnet for tourists and
residents, including young couples
for pre-wedding photographs and
honeymoons.
To this day, even with the
rise of visitors, the south coast of
Gunungkidul is still as beautiful as it
used to be. Clean beaches with white
sand and towering rocks, all remain
untouched by luxurious hotel or resort
chains. Low prole accommodation
and small hotels run by locals
are available nearby, while fresh
seafood with affordable price can
be easily found. However, getting to
the beach is quite challenging as the
area is hilly which somehow makes

this hidden paradise even more
worth a visit.
BEACH HOPPING
I started my trip to Gunungkidul
Beach from Yogyakarta early in
the morning. My rst stop was
Ngobaran Beach, a wonderful
starting point to follow the trail of
Gunungkidul coast line that boasts
layers of rocks, cliffs and the ocean.
A temple stands at the edge of the
cliff, making the view even more
breath taking.
Dawn had come when I moved
on to Nglambor Beach, a relatively
 ocean. As for those who were not
up for a swim, lounging in a hotel
or resort along the beach was the
perfect option.
Morning seemed to end rather
quickly and it was time for lunch.
I continued to Ngrenehan Beach
where shermen unloaded their
freshly caught sh from their trip at
dawn. The drive from Nglambor to
Ngrenehan took me through more
hills and small towns. It was not long
before the scent of sea returned to
the air. Ngrenehan Beach is shaped
like a horseshoe with one of its ends
resembling a crocodile head. During
rainy season, the horseshoe-shaped
part is lush and green but during
summer it is quite rocky.
Fishing boats lined up neatly in a
row. Children run to the water every
time they saw a boat approaching,
as if they were welcoming their
fathers, uncles, brothers or neighbors.
Meanwhile, the men helped each
other to pull their shing boats to

new destination that became

popular through social media. This
beach is more like a small bay
with low tide, perfect for swimming
and snorkeling. There are at least
three snorkeling establishments here
that offer packages which include
goggles, ns and underwater
photography. On my visit, the water
was warm and a guide from one
of the snorkeling centers stated that
the current was causing the water to
be a little bit muddy, which meant
that the view underwater may not be
clear. Even so, a number of visitors

shore and lifted the boats on their
shoulders off the shore. There was
no need to ask for a help, everyone
worked to do this chore together. It
was such a joyful view to see.
FRESH SEAFOOD
At Ngrenehan Beach, visitors can
enjoy freshly caught seafood at
many food joints along the beach
entrance. A wholesale sh market is
also standing nearby. I was not in
a rush to relish some fresh seafood,
so I took my time to chat with some

boat. One of them had a small
bucket lled with a crab that he just
took out of his net. He offered it to
me with a price much cheaper than
that of surrounding stalls. It was a
deal not to be missed for sure. I took
the bucket to a nearby food joint,
asked them to cook the crab for me.
Devouring the crab with some rice
for the side dish and coconut water
for my drink on a woven mat at the
beach gave a different sensation,
certainly much better than enjoying

top of that, to see the shermens
smiles as they walked by and saw
me enjoying the sweet tender crab
meat was a pleasure on its own.
Their look showed that they felt
appreciated for their hard work.
With a full stomach, I decided it
was time to hit the road and nd a
spot for a sunset session. The most
popular beach to enjoy sunset on this
coastline is either Baron or Kukup
Beach, the two beaches that could
have become one if it werent for the
hill standing between them. Getting
to Baron and Kukup Beach is quite
easy and thats why these beaches
tend to be crowded on the weekends
or public holidays even so, both
Baron and Kukup are worth a visit.
Finally, my beach day at
Gunungkidul came to an end. As I

stop capturing the beautiful view of
sunset that left a trace of crimson

expected to have a good capability
in reading and reciting the Koran to
prove he can be a religious leader
in the family.
But as time passed, not so many
men in Jakarta can do Pencak Silat
or recite the Koran as good as in
the old days. Most couples now hire
a Betawi cultural ensemble from a
Betawi cultural center to represent
them in the Palang Pintu ritual. This
group, which consists of several
Betawi artists, will perform Pencak

the family of the groom-to-be will
parade to the bride-to-bes home
accompanied by marawis (a Betawi
traditional percussion ensemble)
playing Arabic songs. Entering the
brides front yard, the troupe will
be intercepted by the brides family
and the groom-to-be will then be
challenged by a local champion.
This challenge is the Palang Pintu
ritual that the groom should pass
before he marries his loved one.
The Palang Pintu ritual begins
by a pantun (a rhyming quatrain)
jam from the groom and the brides
side. The families will take turns to
recite their poem until nally the

brides family requests the groom-
to-be to show his ability in Pencak
Silat. The groom-to-be must accept
the challenge to assure the whole
family that he is a good man and is
capable of protecting his future wife
and children.

protect their daughter, just like what
they have always wished for. The
brides family will recite another
pantun to welcome the grooms
family at the beginning of the
ceremony. The grooms family will
enter the brides home afterwards
with marawis music playing in the
background. They will continue the
wedding ceremony inside the brides
home which is usually held in an
Islamic ceremony.
The philosophical meaning of
Palang Pintu is actually to always
be prepared if you are going to
make an important decision in
your life. Not only is Palang Pintu

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot
more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
