1.**Description*of*Summer*Program*and*how*it*fulfills*a*recreational*and/or*youth*developmental*need:*

Fuente* Nueva* Charter* School* will* conduct* its* third* Spanish* Summer* Day* Camp* in* 2017.* The*
program* focuses* on* engaging* students* through* language,* culture,* arts,* science,* games* and* field*
trips.* This* summerUlong* day* camp* is* designed* to* serve* Fuente* Nueva* Students* along* with*
elementary*school*age*students*from*the*greater*community.*
*
Many* Hispanic* parents* from* the* adjacent* Pacific* Union* School* District* (with* over* 25%* Hispanic*
enrollment)*are*interested*in*sending*their*children*to*this*summer*program*to*learn*how*to*read*and*
write* in* Spanish.* * These* scholarships* would* help* Hispanic* youth* become* truly* bilingual* by* adding*
reading* and* writing* to* their* Native* Spanish* speaking* abilities.* * This* opportunity* would* also* provide*
access*to*summer*enrichment*activities,*which*has*been*shown*to*result*in*academic*progress*the*
next*year.**Weekly*topics*will*include:*The*SpanishUSpeaking*World,*Science*Week,*Sports*Week,*
The*Redwood*Forest,*Our*Ocean,*and*All*About*Mexico.*

NonUHispanic* children* would* also* benefit* from* this* arrangement* by* interacting* with* native* Spanish*
speakers*of*their*same*age*group.*Studies*show*that*children*tend*to*retain*more*knowledge*when*it*
is*presented*to*them*by*their*peers.*

The*summer*camp*will*be*conducted*from*July*24**August*19=8,*Monday*through*Friday,*from*7:30*
a.m.**5:30*p.m.**Fuente*Nueva*Charter*School*is*located*at*1730*Janes*Road,*Arcata.*

Fee* is* $120/week* and* participation* is* open* to* any* student* from* transitional* kindergarten* to* fifth*

unemployment* compensation,* or* a* pay* stub* which* reflects* an* income* level* that* meets* Humboldt*
County*low*income*limits.*

Our*fundraising*goal*is*$4800,*which*would*provide*scholarships*for*10*low*income*students*to*
attend*for*4*weeks.*We*are*asking*for*$1400*from*HAF*Summer*Youth*Partnership*2017.**
Humboldt*Sponsors*has*donated*$800*in*2017.**HispanicUowned*businesses*and*local*banks*
have*donated*the*remaining*$2600.**

8.***Please*describe*the*process*you*use*for*advertising*and*doing*outreach*to*the*community*for*****
******your*Summer*Program:*

Fuente*Nueva*students*are*encouraged*to*attend*through*announcements*in*the*monthly*newsletter,*
fliers,*and*announcements*in*classrooms.**At*Pacific*Union*School,*flyers*are*being*distributed*at*the*
Comite*de*Padres*(i.e.,*District*English*Language*Advisory*Committee)*meetings*and*to*English*
Language*Learners.*Advertisements*are*placed*in*both*the*North*Coast*Journal*and*the*Mad*River*
Union.*When*available*we*advertise*on*KHSUs*community*calendar,*and*other*radio*outlets.**

These*scholarships*are*targeted*for*lowUincome,*Hispanic*students.*Not*only*does*it*provide*a*
safe*place*for*low*income*students*to*spend*their*summer*days,*it*also*gives*them*a*chance*to*
learn*to*read*and*write*in*their*native*language.*We*offer*a*free*lunch*for*those*who*qualify*for*the*
scholarship.*The*friendships*that*are*made*with*children*from*diverse*backgrounds*will*be*
founded*on*a*respect*for*the*Spanish*language*and*cultural*sharing.*This*is*a*great*way*to*invest*
in*the*future*unity*of*our*community.**
