1.0GeneralIntroductiontoJacketedPiping
Thisspecificationcoversthedesignofsteamjacketedpiping,continuous(fullyjacketed)/discontinuous(Notfully
jacketed),foruseonprocesspipingsystemswheresolidificationofmediummayoccur.Itincludestherequirementfor
thelayout,materials,fabrication,erectionandtestingofjacketedpipingsystem.

2.0SteamJacketingSystem
2.1General

Thesteamjacketingsystemconsistsof:

Thesteamsupplypipingtothejacketsfromsteamsupplymanifold
Theindividualsteamjacketcircuits
Thecondensateoutletpipingtocondensateheader,steamtrap&trap
installationuptocondensatereturnmanifold.

2.2TypesofJacketing

a.ContinuousJacketing_

Allstraightlengths,flanges,fittings,valvesandbranchconnectionsarefullyjacketed.

b.DiscontinuousJacketing_
Onlystraightlengthofpipesarejacketed.Flanges,tees,elbows,branchconnectionsandweldsarenotjacketed.

2.3Identification

AllpipingrequiringsteamjacketingshallbeshownontheP&IDsandPipingdrawingsindicatingcontinuous(fully)
ordiscontinuous(notfully)jacketedpipingwithdoublelinesbesidesthemainline.AdditionallyinsulationtypeIJ
isgivenattheendofthefinenumberofthejacketedlinestofacilitateidentificationofthesteamjacketedlines.
Examples:
a.Continuous(fully)JacketedLines:

b.Discontinuous(notfully)jacketedlines.

Locationofcenteringguides,bafflessupportsandanchorsmustbespecifiedontheisometricdrawings.

2.4SteamSupplytoJacket

1.Thesteamsupplytoeachjacketedcircuitshallbetakenfromthemainheaderorsubheadersorsteamsupply
manifoldforjacketing.Thesteamheaderorsubheadersorsteamsupplymanifoldsshallbeprovidedwith
steamtraps.
2.Sizetobe1/2NBfor4x3jackets&smallerand3/4NBfor6x4jackets&larger.
3.Alltakeoffsfromthesteamheadersorsubheadersorsteamsupply
manifoldsshallbetakenfromthetop.
4.Thevalvesatthesteamsupplystationsandalsothesteamtrapsshallbeprovidedwithanameplatewiththeline
no.ofthepipebeingjacketed.
5.ArrangementofsteamsupplymanifoldisshowninAnnexureI.

2.5IndividualSteamJacketedCircuits

2.5.1JacketcircuitsConstructionofpipesections

1.Asteamjacketpipeconsistsofaprocesslinewhichpassesthroughthecontraofalargediametersteamline.The
nominalsizesoftheinnerpipe(core)andouterpipe(jacket)ininchesareasgiveninthetablebelow.

2.Forcontinuousjacketing,

i.theouterjacketpipeisweldedtothebackoftheendflange(modified)ofeachjacketsection.Theinner
pipeisweldedintothemodifiedflange.Fordetailsrefer.AnnexurelV

ii.Valvesareboughtasjacketedvalves,withflangedsteaminlet&outletconnections.Jacketedvalvesshallhave
standardboreandoversizedflanges.
3.Fordiscontinuousjacketing,endofthejacketingisweldedtotheinnerpipe.Fordetailofjackettopipejoint,see
AnnexureVIII.Valvesflanges,tees,elbows,branchconnections&weldsarenotjacketed.
4.CenteringguidestosupporttheinnerpipesonlongspansshallbemadeasshowninAnnexureIX.

2.5.2JacketedCircuitsLayoutandconnections

1.Asteamjacketcircuitisformedbyanumberofjacketsections(pipe,
fittings,valvesetc.)whichareconnectedinseriesbyjumpovers.Each
steamjacketcircuithasitsownvalvedsteamsupplyandcondensate
drainsthroughsteamtraps.
2.Inprinciplethesteaminletpipemustbeconnectedtotheuppermost
pointofthecircuit.
3.Jumpoversconnectthelowesttappingatjacketendoveraweldedor
flangedjointtothetop(orside)tappingintheadjoiningjacketedsection
forhorizontalpiping.Thesteamandcondensatearecarriedtogether
fromonesectionthroughthejumpovertothenextsection.Incaseof
flangedjointsthejumpovershallbeprovidedwithabreakupflange.The
inlet&outlettosteamjacketshallbe1800apart.
4.Themaximumnumberofjacketedsectionsincludedinonecircuit
dependsonlayout,typeoffittingsorvalves,size,insulationsetc.
Straightrunofpipeshallhavebreakupflangejointsatevery5M(max.)
5.Thetotallengthofonecircuitshallnotexceed20Mincaseof
continuousjacketingand25Mincaseofdiscontinuousjacketing.
6.Althougheachcircuitshallbearrangedsothattheflowofcondensateis
generallydownwards,asmallverticalrise,duetolayoutispermitted
provideddrainageatlowestpointifpossible.Thetotalofindividual
verticalpiperisepercircuitshallnotbemorethan1metroandeach
individualriseshallbelessthan300mm.
7.Thelayoutofpipingandequipmentmustbesuchastoreducepotential
congealingtoaminimum.Deadendedandnoncirculatingpiping
shouldbeavoidedwherepossible.
8.Acrossshallbeprovidedincaseofdirectionchange,however,jacketedelbowsmaybeusedifspeciallyindicated
inISOS.
9.Forcontinuousjacketedfittings,jumpovers,branchconnections
(includingvents/drain/instrumentconnections)andforusageofbafflesetc.AnnexureV,VI,VII.
10.FordiscontinuousjacketingdetailsreferAnnexureVIII.
11.Tokeepproperconcentricitybetweencoreandjacketedpipeinternalguide(RodsorBars)shallbeprovidedat
intervaldependinguponsizeofthePipe.
12.Flangedjointsorendcapsshallbeusedtodiscontinueonefeedlength
fromthenext.Intermediatepartialbafflesshallbeprovidedifaseparate
branchportionistobeheatedfromthemaintinesteam.

2.6CondensateoutletpipingtocondensateheaderSteamtrapsandTrapinstallation

1.Attheendofanycircuit,thesteamcondensateistobedrainedfrom
lowestpointinanycircuit.
2.ThesteamtrapsshallbeBalancedpressurethermostaticsteamtrapswith40meshstrainer&100subcool
temperatures.
3.Thecondensatedrainlineshallbe1/2NBfor4x3jacketsandsmaller
and3/4NBfor6x4jacketsorlarger
4.Condensatedrainlinesfromeachcircuittosteamtrapstobeasshort
aspossibleforgravitydrainage.
5.Thedischargelineofthesteamtrapshallbeasshortaspossibleand
selfdraining.
6.Eachsteamjacketcircuitshallbeprovidedwithitsowntrapconnecting
tocondensaterecoverysystem.
7.ArrangementofcondensatemanifoldisshowninAnnexureI.
8.Thesteamtrapsmustbepreferablyinstalledinthehorizontalline,
9.Thedischargefromanumberofsteamtrapsshallbecombinedintoa
condensaterecoverymanifoldwhichisconnectedtomainunderground
(opensystem)condensateheader.

3.0Material
AllpipingmaterialsforProcessline(innercore),outerjacket,steamsupply
andcondensatereturnshallbeinaccordancewithmaterialspecifications.
MaterialspecificationfortheProcessline(innercore)shallbeasperP&ID.
MaterialspecforthejacketshallbecarbonsteelwhenthejacketingisdonewithLP
Steam.Materialforinletleadline,jumpoversandoutletlinesshallalsobecarbonsteel.

4.0FabricationandErection
1.FabricationanderectionofpipingsystemsshallbedoneasperCompany/Project
Specification.
2.EachweldoftheinnerpipeshallbeaccessiblefortakingXrayandshallbevisibleduringhydrotesting.
Thereforesplitjacketsshallbeusedtoenableinspectionofeachinnerpipeweld.
3.Longitudinalweldsfromthesplitpipejacketsandsplitteesorreducersshallbestaggeredtoavoidcrossweld.

5.0InspectionFlushingandTesting
1.Hydrotesting,flushing,drainingandinspectionshallbedoneaspercompany/ProjectSpecification.
2.Visualandnondestructiveexaminationsofallweldsshallbeinaccordancewiththerequirementsof
StandardSpecificationfornondestructiveexaminationrequirementofpiping.
3.Weldsoftheprocesspipeshallbeinspectedandtestedbeforejacketpipeiswelded.
4.Jacketpipeshallbeinspectedandtestedbeforesteamsupplyandcondensatereturnpipingareconnectedtothe
jacket.

6.0FabricationInspection&TestingSequenceforfullyJacketedpiping
