marketingcampaigninprintandelectronicmedia.TheservicesofferedlookedreallylucrativeonpapersoI
decidedtogiveitagoandbookedticketsfromIslamabadtoKarachion16[SUP]th[/SUP]May2015,thevery
nextdaysinceit?slaunching.Iwastravelingwithmy2friendsandwewerecomingbackfromourtripto
NeelumValley,AzadKashmir.

5500forbusinessclasshavetocarrytheirheavyluggageontheirown.

Afterboarding,wefoundthatcoachesareexactlythesameonesusedinTezgamorKarakoramExpress.Each
compartmentconsistedof6berthsandcanbelockedbyadoorwhenneeded.Thenewspaper,pillows&
blanketswerealreadythere.WiFiservicewasworkingnicely.However,therewasnofeedinLCDTV.Initially
thefanwasnotworkingbutitwasrectifiedsoonafterwetoldtheattendantofourcoach.Thetrainleft
Islamabadstationatexacttimeof3:15PM.

In15minutes,thetrainreachedRawalpindiwheremanypeopleboardedthetrainandrailwaystaffrefilledthe
watertanksofallcoaches.Thetrainagainmovedatexacttimeof4PM.InfewminutesitreachedChaklala
whereitmadeastopof2minutes.Ithinkit?sagoodmovetopickpassengersfromdifferentstationswithin
samecity.
SoonafterleavingRawalpindi,WiFiserviceturnedoff.Itwasconnectingbutshowingrouterloginpagewithout
anyinternetaccess.

Nowthetrainwasmovingsteadily,soItooktimetocheckoutthesurroundings.Firstlycheckedthewashrooms
andtheywerecleanbuttherewasnoliquidhandsoapinthedispenser,neithertherewasanytissueroll.Upon
askingthestaff,weweretoldthatitwillbefilledfromLahore.Soitmeansforthenext5hours,wecan?tclean
ourhandsuntilwehaveourownsoap.Furthermore,therewasnoLCDTVfeedyet,soweaskedattendant
andweweretoldthatapersonisworkingtorectifythisissue.

Alittlebitlater,Igotabitthirstysowenttowaterdispenserbuttherewasnobottleonit.Uponinquiring,we
wereagaintoldthatwaterwillbeavailablefromLahore.Afterfewpassengersmadesceneaboutwaterissue,
wewereservedbysmall500mlwaterbottleperpassenger.

littleinvestigation,wefoundthatcateringcontractwasawardedto?NabeelMehmood?byPakistanRailways
whoisLahorebased.That?swhyalltheserviceswereexpectedtobeavailablefromLahorestation.

Whenticketcheckercame,wecomplainedhimaboutpatheticservicesandhetriedtobriefusaboutservices.
Hetoldusthatwewillbegivenoptionstoselectmeals(eitherriceorcurry).Healsotoldusthatitwilltake
about1520dayssincethisservicewillbeinnormalstatebecausestaffisnottrained.Itwassurprisingremark
becauseRailwayshadtoomuchtimetotraintheirstaffafteralltheyareprovidingbusinessclassservicesto
theirguests.

ThetrainmadeanoperationalstopatDeonaJuliani(asmallstation)forcrossingpurposeandthatwaswhen
cateringstaffrushedtolocalshopoutsidestationtobuysugarwhichwasprobablyfinishedwhileservingtea.

duringtheprocesselectricitywentoffforabout5minutes.ThetrainleftLahorestationat9PM.AtLahore
stationWiFistartedworkingagainbutassoonasweleftLahorecity,itwentbacktorouterloginstateand
remainedlikethistillKarachi,whichmeansnoWiFiafterwards.

Afterabouthalfhour,weweresuddenlyservedbydinner.Wewerenotgivenanychoicessowehadtoeat
whateverwasavailable.Themenuwaschickenqorma,alittlepotatocurry,andonenaan.Alittlesalad,a
bananaandanestleraita.Theimmediateproblemwashowtokeep6dinnertraysincompartmentbecause
thetablecouldonlyaccommodatetwo.Remaining4peoplehadtokeepthetrayintheirlaps.

Thedinnerwastastybutinmyopinionnotworththepricedifferencewewerepaying.Iwasexpectingafew
moreoptions.Anotherproblemwasnaanserving.Onlyonenaanwasservedperpersonandbothcurrieswere
inmorequantity.Alsoindinnerusuallyanormalpersoneats2naans.Uponinquiring,weweretoldthatonly
onenaanisapprovedbycateringcontractorandadditionalnaanwillcostmoney.Thismadefewpassengers
furioussotheyalmosthadfightwithstaffandthentheyservedusmorenaanswithoutanycost.

Afterdinner,wenttowashroombutsurprisedtoseethatliquidsoapwasnotyetthere.Uponaskingthe
janitorialstaff,theytoldthatliquidsoapwasnotboardedfromLahore.ThismademereallymadandI
demandedthecoachattendanttotakemetoTrainManager.Hewasreluctantatfirstandtriedtoconsoleme
withdifferentexcusesbutIdidn?tlistensohehadtotakeme4coachesaheadwheretrainmanagerwas
present.Aftermeetingtrainmanager,Itoldhimaboutmanycomplaintspassengerswerefacing.Hewas
courteousandcamewithmetosolvethecomplaints.Hekeptassuringmethatallproblemswillbesolvedin
fewdays..butwhataboutuswhoareamongthefirstcustomersofthisservice.
Hefoundtheheadofjanitorialstaff,madethemfilltheliquidsoap.Hetoldthatitwouldmostprobablyendupin
staff?shomeifhedidn?tintervened.Healsomadetheminstallthetissuerollintoilets.Afterthis,hemadethe
stafftodistributecomplimentarymorningkitstoallpassengerswhichwasdoneinnextfewminutes.The
morningkitincludedacomb,asmallsoap,atoothbrushandtoothpaste,asmallhandkerchief.

Afterthis,wehadalittlechitchatwithourcoach?scateringwaiter.Hewasanicepersonandtoldusallabout
problemsfacedbytheirstaff.Thehigherauthoritiesdidn?tprovidethemdiningcarwhichmadetoomuch
problemsforthem.Alsotheywerenotallocatedanyplacetokeeptheirpersonalbelongingsandtosleep.
Thesepoorchapsweresleepinginpassagewaysandemptyplaceneartoilets.Itwasreallyheartbreakingto
seeallthis.

Afterthat,Iwenttosleepbutmyfriendstoldmethatinnightelectricitywentoffagainforfewminutes.Iwoke
upat6:30AMafterhearingtheknockonourcompartmentdoor.Itwascateringstaffinquiringaboutnumberof
guestsinourcompartmentforbreakfast.Itoldhimthatweare6butbringbreakfastalittlelateaseveryoneis
sleepingnow.
By7:30AM,allwereawakesoIaskedhimtobringbreakfast.Breakfastincluded2slicesofbread,atinypack
ofstrawberryjam,atinypackofnurpurbutter,2eggomeletandtea.Someofthepeoplewantedtoeathalf
friedeggbutwewerenotgivenanyoption.Thebreakfastwasfreshandtasty.Wewereservedwithextra
breadsliceswithoutanycost.

TheLCDTvwasnotprovidedwithfeedyetsowefriendsusedourownUSBtowatchamovie.Atleastwe
madeuseoftheresourcesavailable.ThetrainreachedRohriontimewherestationstaffonceagainrefilledthe
waterintanks.Thetoiletswerecleanandjanitorialstaffalsocameinourcompartmenttocleanthedustbin.

Restofthejourneywasok.Therewasnostuffofferedafterbreakfast.AlthoughKarachireachingtimeis2:30
PMsotheyshouldalsoofferlunchoratleastsnacksbutnothingwasservedafterbreakfast.

ThetrainreachedDrighRoadrailwaystationat2:05PMwhichwasexactlyontime.WelandedatDrighRoad
andhenceourjourneyfinishedinGreenline.

MyfinalreviewaboutGreenlinetrainwouldbethesamewordsIusedinposttitle?i.e.MismanagedLuxury?.If
PakistanRailwayshaddoneproperhomeworkbeforelaunchingthisservice..itwouldhavebeenexcellent
additiontoPakistanRailways.BeingaPakistanRailwaylovermyself,Idohopetheywillovercometheir
shortcomingsinnextfewdaysotherwise,itwouldsoonerorlatercollapsewhichIreallydon?twant.

demandedthecoachattendanttotakemetoTrainManager.Hewasreluctantatfirstandtriedtoconsole
mewithdifferentexcusesbutIdidn?tlistensohehadtotakeme4coachesaheadwheretrainmanager
waspresent.Aftermeetingtrainmanager,Itoldhimaboutmanycomplaintspassengerswerefacing.He
wascourteousandcamewithmetosolvethecomplaints.Hekeptassuringmethatallproblemswillbe
solvedinfewdays..butwhataboutuswhoareamongthefirstcustomersofthisservice.
Hefoundtheheadofjanitorialstaff,madethemfilltheliquidsoap.Hetoldthatitwouldmostprobablyend
upinstaff?shomeifhedidn?tintervened.Healsomadetheminstallthetissuerollintoilets.Afterthis,he
madethestafftodistributecomplimentarymorningkitstoallpassengerswhichwasdoneinnextfew

breakingtoseeallthis.

Afterthat,Iwenttosleepbutmyfriendstoldmethatinnightelectricitywentoffagainforfewminutes.I
wokeupat6:30AMafterhearingtheknockonourcompartmentdoor.Itwascateringstaffinquiringabout
numberofguestsinourcompartmentforbreakfast.Itoldhimthatweare6butbringbreakfastalittlelate
aseveryoneissleepingnow.
By7:30AM,allwereawakesoIaskedhimtobringbreakfast.Breakfastincluded2slicesofbread,atiny
packofstrawberryjam,atinypackofnurpurbutter,2eggomeletandtea.Someofthepeoplewantedto
eathalffriedeggbutwewerenotgivenanyoption.Thebreakfastwasfreshandtasty.Wewereserved
withextrabreadsliceswithoutanycost.

TheLCDTvwasnotprovidedwithfeedyetsowefriendsusedourownUSBtowatchamovie.Atleastwe
madeuseoftheresourcesavailable.ThetrainreachedRohriontimewherestationstaffonceagain
refilledthewaterintanks.Thetoiletswerecleanandjanitorialstaffalsocameinourcompartmenttoclean
thedustbin.

Restofthejourneywasok.Therewasnostuffofferedafterbreakfast.AlthoughKarachireachingtimeis
2:30PMsotheyshouldalsoofferlunchoratleastsnacksbutnothingwasservedafterbreakfast.
