Study
Haley, Will, Olivia & Brianna

Brock Turner was a Stanford University swimmer
His victim and her sister went to a party and then she woke up at a
hospital
Brock Turner raped her outside of a frat house while she was unconscious
Two bystanders were riding their bikes and saw something behind the
dumpster
Saw Brock on top of what appeared to be a sleeping woman
He ran and the one of the bystanders chased and tackled him while one
staying with the victim

Found guilty of three felony counts
assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated
or unconscious person
sexual penetration of an intoxicated person
sexual penetration of an unconscious person
Sentenced for 6 months

according to the judge
Only served 3 months and was let out because of
good behavior
His dad believed it was a steep punishment for 20
minutes of action
Consequences for Victim
...they let me shower. I stood there examining
my body beneath the stream of water and
decided, I dont want my body anymore.
Scared to tell loved ones because she did not
want to hurt them
She didnt even know what happened to her until
she read on the news
You dont know me, but youve been inside me,
and thats why were here today.
Her humanity was devalued by the way her rape
was handled in the legal system
The Situation Today
As of September 4th, people were protesting
outside his house in Ohio
He is now a registered sex offender
Protester from his neighborhood -- Hes not going
to live some happy pleasant life. Were going to
never let him forget what he did.
Has to re-register as a sex offender 4 times a year--
for the rest of his life
New bill passed that imposes a mandatory
minimum prison sentence on those convicted of
raping an intoxicated or unconscious person
Also prohibits judges from giving the convicted
felon probation
How do you think societal gender roles for men
and women had an influence on what happened?
This rapists athletic career mattered more than this victims humanity
The athletic careers of men oftentimes takes precedence over the
humanity of women in similar cases throughout history
Victim Blaming
Most people blame the victim because she was drinking
Yet, they excuse Brocks behavior because he was drunk
This exemplifies the double standards that exist between men and
women, as men are permitted to get drunk and make mistakes but
women cant.
Men are pressured into asserting themselves through sexual conquest,
and the victim had been turning Turner down all night
What we learned from researching the case study
There are many problems with the United States
Criminal Justice System, and these issues were
highlighted by how this case was handled
Classist, sexist, racist system that also apparently
gives huge amounts of leniency to college athletes
Affluent, white, heterosexual, star-swimmer,
male Brock Turner got off in 3 months for
rape, and there are so many more low-profile
cases with similar outcomes
Sexual Assault is a recurring problem, especially on
college campuses
Colleges try to push these types of incidents under
the rug because they dont want to look bad when
they have to report it
