I. Introduction

I had the opportunity to observe two wonderful teachers who seemed so passionate

about what they do. The teacher I observed for my P.E class was Rob Stipe. Mr. Stipe is a gym

teacher at White Oak Elementary. The health class I observed was located at Avon Intermediate

school East. My teacher that I had observed was Frank Slaven. Mr. Slaven showed much interest

in the material being taught, and his class. He thought it was extremely important to remind his

class of the importance of drugs, and the effects that could occur.

II. Health Classroom Observation Experiences

While being in the classroom I didnt know what to expect at first. I was in a classroom

with sixth graders, and never really had the opportunity of experiencing what its like

being in this age group. During this class, Mr. Slaven had led the class into discussion. A

lot of children didnt show much interest in the topic of drugs. Mr. Slaven had done a

wonderful job giving direction to the kids about drugs, and how it can affect you long-

term. We then watched YouTube videos on drugs, and how harmful it can be to your

body. As the teacher asked his students questions not many wanted to participate in this

discussion. I think that Mr. Slaven did a wonderful job going into detail about drugs, and

showing the children statistics. It had come to my attention that not many of the kids

were engaged in this lesson. I didnt necessarily agree with some of the material being

shown to a group of 6th graders. Mr. Slaven had stated, we only get one body and its

important we learn the long time effects of drugs.

III. Physical Education Classroom Observation Experiences

In Mr. Stipes class I was extremely excited for this opportunity to observe. In the past

working at an Elementary school third grade would probably be my favorite grade. While

being in the gym I had noticed how prepared Mr. Stipe was for his class to begin. One

thing that I find extremely important while being in a classroom is preparation. Without

preparation, the classroom would be a complete disaster. I was very impressed on how

quickly the class had started, and how efficiently it was. The equipment was ready to go,

and ready for maximized learning. Mr. Stipe had well developed lesson plans already

written ready to go for the day. I still remember as of today, being in gym class, and

having a teacher that wasnt prepared for anything. Everyday my class had gym we

would always have free play, and never had any activities planned. Mr. Stipe had led the

class in warm up exercises. I was very impressed how well the teacher instructed each

child during the warm-up. Mr. Stipe had the children play red light green light to warm

up as well. The game Mr. Stipe introduced to the class was called, Foot Whacker. The

equipment needed for this game is 2-5 red balls. He explained to the class that the red

balls are supposed to be called evil red balls. Five children were picked for this game and

the object of the game was to tag other people who have an evil red ball. If a child gets

tagged, then the child must lay on their back. As the children are on their backs they

should spread their arms, and then their legs should be in the air. If they get tagged from

both legs, then they are able to stand back up. Mr. Stipe explained to the class that its

important we rotate taggers so everyone has a turn. I really liked how he was all about

being fair toward his students. After the children, had participated in this activity they

were given the opportunity to have free time. One thing that I had really admired was

how eager, and anxious each child was being able to have free play. It was amazing being

able to experience the childrens excitement. I never realized how excited a group of

small young children could get.

IV. Teacher Comments

While asking each teacher questions, one thing that had really stood out to be was how

thankful both teachers were having the job they have. Mr. Slaven had stated that he

believes as an educator he can make a difference in, and even outside of the classroom.

While speaking with Mr. Stipe he had stated that his job isnt just for the money. He

explained how its important you go out, and work somewhere that you absolutely love.

He also had stated, you have to have passion for what you do. It takes a special heart to

teach the minds of young children. He explained that its important that as educators we

need to push our children to be the best they can be.

V. Summary
Based on each observation Ive come to conclusion that both teachers had put each

childs best interest at heart. It was a fun experience being able to observe each teacher,

and understand their different teaching styles. Ive learned the importance of why

children need physical education inside the classroom, and even outside of school.

Fitness is a necessity in all schools, and its important for all ages to be active. Standard 5

states, The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for

health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. (Health Standards,

N.D) This plays an important factor for both classes, and explains the importance of

having fitness. In both classes observed they both did a great job accomplishing that

standard from speaking about drugs to moving our bodies physically. In the article by

Health Fitness it states, A person who is fit is capable of living live to its fullest extent.
