4Cantarow, Ellen. Sex, Race, and Criticism: Thoughts of a White Feminist on Kate Chopin and

Zora Neale Hurston. The Radical Teacher, no. 9, 1978, pp. 3033

This article talks about Kate Chopin and her book the awakening. This article talks about how

her book was a feminist piece. Although the focus on this source was on Kate Chopins the

awakening I feel that pull bits and pieces from this article and apply it to my paper. I am thinking

that if this article argues that she is a feminist writer than I will have a source that backs me up

when I say Kate Chopin was a feminist writer. This source is mildly reliable because the author

does start off with a memory of her life then starts talking about the different aspects of feminine

writings. Therefore, I feel this source may be a little biased.

Chopin, Kate The story of an hour The Norton Introduction to Literature, edited by Kelly J

Mays, W.W. Norton & Company. Inc., 2014, 278-280,

This source is the story itself. I will be pulling from this text to generate evidence that supports

my thesis. This source is reliable because it provides the story objectively.

the way Louise dealt with the news of her husband death. Louise was first sad then she thought

about her love for him which was conditionally and that with him being dead she had a feeling

taking a hold of her. The feeling was freedom and then Louise was instantaneously happy. The

article also talks about Kate Chopins life and how the story was a parallel to her parents life.

Her father died in a train wreck like Mr. Mallard and after Chopins fathers death her mother

Eliza had this new found freedom. After reading this article I am confident that I can use this

article for my paper. It has background into Kate Chopins Life and does a great job of analyzing

the text. This text supports my main theory of what I wanted to express not exactly but as close

as it is going to get. The text talks about how Louise was clearly unhappy in her marriage

because she was elated that her husband passed. I feel that this source is reliable it is objective.

Tolentino, Jasdomin Kate Chopin's Life and Personal Influence. Excellence in Research

Award. (2008) Paper 2. 10-1

The author of this article gives a break down into Kate Chopins life. The author actually

provides a time line of life events for Chopin. Then the author goes into detail about Chopins

life. I feel this article is reliable because it gives me further background information about

Chopins life. I could use this article to support my idea of how the main character was unhappy

in her marriage and the supporting evidence would be Kate Chopin drew from her own

experiences when she was creating Louise Mallard the character. But also I feel this article

wouldnt provide me with too much information other than Chopins life and I would be reliant

on other sources to further my paper.

Sabbagh, Mahmoud Reza Ghorban Conjured-Up reality shattered: examining the Uncertain

ideology underlying Chopins The Story of an Hour. Procedia - Social and

Behavioral Sciences. (2014) 3-1

This author analyzes Kate Chopins work. The author talks about the arguments people make for

it being a feminist paper and then gives the counter arguments on against the feminist side. I feel

that this source is reliable but not useful. Out of the eight pages of the article I only found one

paragraph that talked about how the paper was feminist. I feel that to argue that this is a feminist

paper I would need an article with more substance to it in order to be able to argue my point

effectively.

Yinhua, Hou. An Hour's Freedom, Timeless Feminism: On Irony and Imagery in Kate Chopin's

The Story of an Hour. Overseas English (2011) 2-1.

In this article, the author is using the ironies in the story to state that it is a feminist piece. The

article talks about the relationship Louise and her sister Josephine had. It talks about how when

Louise was joyful about the news but her sister could not see it because her sister could not see

past her gender role as a woman. The author also includes other examples of irony throughout

the paper, the author mentions how Louise was whispering free free at last to herself but she

would never be free because she died within the hour. She essentially lived one hour of freedom

or the feeling at least. After reading this article I have concluded that this source is beneficial to

my paper. It clearly talks about how the paper is a feminist paper and gives reason that I agree

with as to why. This source is recent and scholarly therefore I can use it for my paper. I feel this
