Topic: Introduction to The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

OBJECTIVES ACCORDING TO STANDARDS
Standard CC.1.3.9-10.C
Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other
characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

Standard - CC.1.4.9-10.N

Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation, establishing one
or multiple points of view, and introducing a narrator and/or characters.

Standard - CC.1.4.9-10.O

Use narrative techniques such as dialogue, description, reflection, multiple plot lines, and pacing,
to develop experiences, events, and/or characters; use precise words and phrases, telling details,
and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, settings, and/or
characters.
ANTICIPATORY SET
Introduce the class to the setting of The Great Gatsby by asking the students what they know
about the roaring 20s.

Everyone take a moment to think about anything you know about the 1920s. This includes
people, events, politics, culture, or trends.

After a few moments of thought, allow students to volunteer their ideas.

ASSESSMENT
Creating the fake Facebook profiles will help the students demonstrate their understanding on
character based on what they had learned so far. It can also allow them to make predictions
based on what kind of comments they make.

PROCEDURES
1.Opening Discussion about students knowledge on the Roaring Twenties
a. What do you already know about The Roaring Twenties?
b. It could be anything:
i. People of the Time
ii. Events
iii. Politics
iv. Culture
v. Trends
vi. One word that comes to mind
b. Students share their ideas with the class
2. Powerpoint introducing the setting of The Great Gatsby and six main characters
a. Each character page has pictures of the characters from the movie to help visual
learners.

3. Students will break up into six groups of two for an activity.


a. Each group chooses at random a paper slip out of a hat. On the paper will be the
character, a brief description and a quote.
b. Each group will plan and create a Facebook profile poster for the character they chose.
i. Students are required to make at least one post that their character might make
on their social media wall, but are welcome to get creative. Students should
consider making a status, posting their mood, relationship statuses, drawing a
profile picture, and/ or creating a bio.
c. Tape profiles on the walls for display
d. Each group is assigned a certain color marker to represent their character and required to
make at least one social media post as their character on each other characters profile.
1. Consider each characters relationship with each other.

4. Group share & Discussion


a. After the activity, each group presents their social media profile, and discusses their
thought process in creating the profile, and the comments on the profile as well.

Accommodations will be made as required from IEPs and 504s.

Exit slips character predictions

Write down on a piece of paper a prediction for your character and how you think the activity
helped you make that prediction
