Three Factors to Consider When Choosing a Major in

University

We, as the third graders in senior high school, have to make an important decision for the

next step of our education after the graduation. We have to choose whether we want to

continue to university or to work. If we want to continue to university, we have to choose the

major to take. If we want to continue to work, we must have skills to meet the work

requairements which are mostly difficult to meet by us. For students who want to continue to

university like us, we have to choose the right major that will lead us to a brighter future. So,

there are three factors that we must consider if we want to choose the major in the university.

The first factor has something to do with the passion and psychological side. Passion is

the first key if we want to continue our education to university. Passion is a strong feeling of

enthusiasm for something or about doing something. Why is passion the first key when we

want to choose the major in university? Because when we do something, we need not only

our logic, but also our passion. When we do something that fits our passion, we can do that

thing better than other people who do it with only their logic. Dont let people decide what

our passion is, it is our own choice and we are the one know every thing about our own self.
So, when we want to attend university, first we need to know our passion, and then after that

we can decide what major we want to choose. When we choose our major based on our

passion, we just need to develop our passion later in the university. The benefit of choosing

the major based on passion, we will not be underpressured with the major that we don not

like. Just like Ray Bradbury said Love what you do and do what you love. Dont listen to

anyone else who tells you what you want and what you love. Imagination should be the

center of your life.

The second factor is to consider the job prospects in the future, but do not be obsessed

over them. Choosing a major is not like applying for a job, it is mainly about choosing our

life's path. The jobs, internships, and other opportunities that are open for us as a result of

following our passion come second. On the other hand, if our passion lines up with our career

plans, then choose the major that will get us there fastest. For example, if we want to be an

architect and have always wanted to be an architect, then consider majoring in architecture. If

in the beginning we already consider this, the way to get us to the bright future will be much

easier and faster. And by looking at future job, we can knowing about major that has less

enthusiasts but with a big prospect job. For example, Major of Philosophy has fewer

enthusiast. But, did we know that graduates majoring in philosophy has big potential to be

success in the future. Graduates majoring in philosophy could be research advisory even state

adviser. The second example is, majority of pests and plant diseases. We rarely hear about

this major, but do we know that this major has big job prospect in the future. If we pass in

this major, we could be the originator products that can cope with pests and diseases in plant.

And also we have to remember that Indonesia is an agricultural country and most of

Indonesian peoples income comes from agriculture. so, there are 2 examples of major with

fewer enthusiasts but with big prospect.

 The last but not least factor is to look at our financial conditions. For instance, when we

want to go to medical school which is very expensive, first we have to ask our parents

whether they can afford it or not. The cheapest cost of medical school roughly 11 billion

rupiah per semester (in Andalas University of Padang). This is the cheapest cost from all

national universities in Indonesia, it is still expensive for people who can not afford it. So the

solution is, to be active and always looking for information about the university which gives

the prospective students an early college scholarship. One of national universities which

gives the prospective students early scholarship is in University of Padjajaran, Bandung.

They give the prospective students free entry tuition fee for bachelor degree and master

degree for medical students. But they give a preconditon to the prospective medical students

who want to take this scholarship. They must be prepared to be placed in West Java

(Bandung) around 3-4 years and after they graduate, they must do an internship assignment

in a state hospital in Bandung for 2-3 years. This scholarship is really interesting and

profitable for people who can not afford medical school.

In conclusion, considering our passion, job prospects in the future and financial

condition can guide us to choose the right major in the university later. So, as the third senior

high school students, we must think it over and over again, unless we will regret it. Choosing

the major in university is the first important step for our future. If we choose a wrong major,

it may ruin our future.
