- How do we understand disability?

Class One
More experiential ?
Guiding Questions:
- What is a disability and how have our understandings about disabilities changed
over time?
- Why is it important to understand disabilities as future educators or social
workers? If were a teacher, how can we include students with disabilities in our
classroom? If were a social worker, how can we be sure to work with these clients
without being judgemental or coddling?
- How do you think the education system would function if The Education for All
Handicapped Children was not passed in 1975?

For class:
1. Go to http://www.fortschools.org/m/content.cfm?subpage=62980 to view the
timeline of Special Education in history. Write down some key ideas you have about how
they impacted schools. How do you see these changes in schools and in children? How
do you think this impacted teachers and social workers, as well as these students?
2. Visit http://www.copower.org/leadership/models-of-disability and take notes over
the different models of disabilities. After taking your notes, ask yourself what models of
disabilities youve seen, and those you havent. Compare your list; What side is longer,
and why do you think that is? Be prepared to bring your lists to class. (Have them share
in groups?)
3. Watch Including Samuel
Class:
(20 minutes total) Count off into groups and share your ideas about the history of
Special Education. Talk about how you think it was like before disabled students had the
opportunity for equal education. What does this make you feel like as pre-service
teachers or social workers (10 minutes)? Share ideas as a class (10 minutes tops) Be sure
to have at least two people from each group talk-- dont allow them to say things shortly,
but really help the express their thoughts descriptively. If they seem to have a hard time,
ask leading questions or address another member in the group.
(30-40 minutes total) Ask each group to regroup and talk about the different
models of disability (10 minutes); Share the lists with group members and
compare/contrast. Circle back up as a class (10-20 minutes) and discuss what they found
as they compared/contrasted their lists-- tally up each group exposed to the models of
each disability. Were there any that were more evident than others? Why do you think x
model was more apparent than x model? Are there any models youve never considered;
Why?
(15 minutes total) What do you think the purpose of todays class was? (Post
answers on class thread for participation) Discuss after 5ish minutes have passed, or after
each colleague has posted their answers.
Blog:

Tuesdays Discussion:
Think back to when we asked you to write your own definition and
understanding what a disability is. Compare your thoughts from the beginning of the
week to the end of the week. Did your thoughts change, or did they stay the same?
Explain.
Did you know that there were different models of disability? If you did, explain
how and where you learned about them. If not, explain how they made you rethink about
disabilities in their various contexts. Did they surprise you?
Consider the different models of disabilities and our discussion from Tuesdays
class. Why do you think some models are better known and some are not? Explain.
Why do you think Special Education (equal education) wasnt thought much of
before the Education for All Handicapped Students Act? Explain and justify your reason
with facts, opinions, and at least one outside source-- it cannot be the website we
provided you.

Wheelchair simulation:
What were some of the reactions that the community had when seeing you or your
group member in the wheelchair? Did you expect to have those reactions; Why or why
not?
When you had to get on the bus, what was it like for you and your group
members? Did you have to wait for a bus with a ramp? Did other riders give you space or
were they angry when you had to get on the bus and they had to move?
What did it feel like to try and get to the top floor of Lafollette? Were other people
surprised when you said you needed to go to the top floor? What were your reactions
upon hearing that the student elevator only went to the sixth floor of the building? Were
you frustrated; What were the emotions you and your group experienced?
Did you find campus to be wheelchair friendly? Name at least five places on
campus that you encountered and describe the setting-- did the room have a table where
you could sit? Was the room big enough for you to move around in, or were you confined
to one area? Could you do everything that your other classmates could? Explain.
Did people kneel down to talk to you when you or your colleague was in the
wheelchair? How did it make you feel? Was the world different from this point of view?
Be sure to explain your answers thoroughly. (universal design) Discuss experience.

Including Samuel:
How are people with disabilities typically portrayed in the mediaon TV, in
movies, in the newspaper? Give examples of this.
Norman Kunc and Joe Petner say that people with disabilities are a normal part of
human diversity. That is very different from viewing people with disabilities as deviant or
brokenneeding to be cured or fixed. Do you see disabilities as a part of diversity, like
ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation? Explain.
What are the qualities within Barbara OBriens classroom (Samuels class) or
Haggerty School (Nathaniels school) that allow inclusion to succeed?
Now that you have watched the film, do you think youll do anything differently
in your home, work or community life as a result? What and why?

Article (from every blog):

Share an article or video this week that impacted you this week. Explain why you
think this an article worth sharing with your colleagues.
Describe how this article impacted you and how youre going to use it in either
your classroom or your life. Why is it important that your article or video impacts you
personally?

Remember to write your blog in APA format, including a citation/reference for every source
(e.g., TedTalks). Choose 2-3 InTASC standards: write out the standards you selected and briefly
explain how we addressed those standards this week.

Class Two

Guiding Questions:
- Looking back at what we did last week, what have you learned? What new things
were brought to your attention? Did you have any preconceptions that were proven
wrong or right? What were your eyes opened to?

For class:
1. Complete your blog and send it to edmu205@yahoo.com prior to the beginning of
class. Be sure that it is in APA format, includes citations/references for your sources, and
thoroughly addresses how the class achieved 2-3 InTASC standards.
2. Read this article about disability culture (http://dsq-sds.org/article/view/343/433)
and come up with three lingering questions that you had after reading the article. Be sure
to take notes of what different types of disability culture there is and be prepared to
explain what each culture means to you. Are they the same/different? Explain.

Class:
THIS IS WHERE WE GO TO CARLOS LAB
(40 minutes) Count off into groups, take a whiteboard, and have each group write
out/explain what disability culture is to them, and provide examples (15 minutes). Have
each group present what they wrote on what disability culture is to them. Pick one
lingering question from the group to write on the board. Address each lingering question
after all groups share their definitions and examples as a class.
(35 minutes) Discuss the wheelchair simulation and have each group meet-up to
explain what it felt like for them (5 minutes), Allow the groups to share their ideas and
experiences. What was it like to experience an aspect of disability culture for yourself?

Disability Curriculum

March 28th and April 4th

(1st day) Class for March 28th: Discussion day

Guiding Questions:
- What is a disability and how have our understandings about disabilities changed
over time?
- Why is it important to understand disabilities as future educators or social
workers? If were a teacher, how can we include students with disabilities in our
classroom? If were a social worker, how can we be sure to work with these clients
without being judgemental or coddling?
- How accepting
- How do you think the education system would function if The Education for All
Handicapped Children was not passed in 1975?

To complete before class:

1) There is a weebly website over disabilities in which you will need to have

completed before class Tuesday. Make sure to pay close attention to each page on the

website and leave comments with your name. We will be having a discussion over this so

make sure to come prepared to class in order to participate in the activity and class

discussion.
2) Heads up: Including Samuel is a movie that will need to be watched. This can be

purchased on Amazon for $1.99. There will be a section in your blog over this so make

sure to watch it. If you need help getting it, do not be afraid to ask anyone. We could

possibly watch it together? Since the Disability curriculum is split up in two different

weeks, this will not need to be completed until the week of April 4th. The questions over

this movie will be in the blog for that week, therefore this gives you time to watch it.

In class on March 28th: (Laurinda and Holyn will be leading)

Discussion day

Blog questions covering Day 1 of curriculum

1) Weebly Questions/ class discussion:

Think back to when we asked you to write your own definition and understanding
what a disability is. Compare your thoughts from the beginning of the week to the end of
the week. Did your thoughts change, or did they stay the same? Explain.
Did you know that there were different models of disability? If you did, explain

with facts, opinions, and at least one outside source-- it cannot be the website we
provided you.

2) Non-visible disabilities:

How do we help those around us with non visible disabilities? How do we create
environments where they feel safe?
Think of these disabilities in the perspective of being a teacher or social worker.
How are you going to make sure that what you do fit every student's needs?
While watching the videos for anxiety and OCD on the disability website, what
did you feel? What thoughts/questions came to mind? Did these videos open your eyes
about non-visible disabilities and give a good example of why its so important to be
aware of these?

(2nd day) Class for April 4th: Visit to Carlos Lab

To complete before class:

1) We will be visiting Carlos Lab Tuesday. Make sure to have any questions that you

want them to cover for you this day about disability. This could be anything related to

disability and technology, access on campus for people with disabilities, resources, etc.
2) Reminder: Make sure you have access to Including Samuel and watch it. You

have until Tuesday April 11th (the day the blog is due for this unit) to watch this video.

This will be in your blog so it is important that you watch it in order to complete this

section. If you need help getting access dont be afraid to ask.

In class on April 4th:

1) We will meet at Carlos lab where Lary will be there to talk as well. This should be

an interesting field trip and youll learn a lot. Make sure to bring your comp book

because you will want to take notes and there will be questions in your blog.
