Children are subject to whatever adults choose to inflict upon them. As I watch the

community around me I feel an increasing need to lift where I stand. Who around me is in need

of lifting up? My final answer to that question was children, I then asked myself, how do I truly

make a difference in the lives of children here in my community without asking my family to pay

the price? Education seemed to be the loud and clear answer. With education comes

opportunity, and with opportunity comes the ability to achieve whatever your heart desires. As I

educate myself to become a teacher I find that my formal education, work experience, and

community service have added to my talents, intrapersonal skills and abilities to become an

effective teacher.

Educational Background

My early education started in the rural community of Rupert, Idaho

where I attended Acequia Elementary until 5th grade. Then because our

school was overcrowded we were bused to Big Valley Elementary for 6th

grade. Sixth grade was an especially ruff year for me and I finished the

second half of it being schooled at home. I then attended East Minico

Junior High School from 7th to 9th grade followed by attending Minico High

School where I graduated in 2000. After High School I attended Idaho

State University in Pocatello, Idaho. Currently I am attending the College

of Southern Idaho, majoring in Special Education k-12. I will transfer to

Grand Canyon University this coming Fall where I will complete my

Masters Degree in Special Education K-12.

Currently I have an Associates of Applied Science in Culinary Arts. I love

my cooking degree and use it at home every day, I however found that I do

not love the hours cooks/chefs work. I wanted to have a family and did not

see this as a family friendly profession. Most chefs work nights, weekends,

and holidays. I still love to cook and I am glad that I spent the time and

money to get the degree.

Work History

I babysat from the time I was twelve until about 5 years ago. Having been

around children has added to my love for them. I have always enjoyed

working with children. I started babysitting when I was twelve years old. I

have had a unique opportunity to see how other people run their homes, how

they raised their children differently than me. This also gave me the

opportunity to work with a variety of personalities and backgrounds.

My husband and I have five children in our home, four biological and one

foster. (Whom we are working on adopting.) I have gone through the PRIDE

classes from the Department of Health and Welfare and am currently a foster

parent. I have had special needs children placed in my home, while this is

not formal training it is training through life experience. In order to maintain

our foster- care license we will continue to take child development and

trauma classes.

Service/Extra Curricular section

I have run the childrens program at our local church for the past 4 and years. This is a

volunteer position in which we spend 2 hours every Sunday teaching Children from ages 3 to 11.

This has helped me learn how to teach a group of children varying in backgrounds, education,

and age. Our curriculum is set up to allow for 25 minutes of singing time and 25 minutes of

Bible study time. The children are then divided up into classes and have 50 minutes of Bible

discussion. One child in particular has taught me how to work with a child who has ADHD. He is

not physically capable of sitting for that long and listening. This has helped me learn how to

modify my teaching so that I can be more interactive with the children. It has also provided me

with tools that help him keep his hands busy. Before working with him I was not aware of some

of the tools to help children with ADHD. We used a fidget cub, pipe cleaners, and other objects

during the lesson to help him keep his hands busy when we had sitting time.

Why I choose to teach

I love children, I have always enjoyed their honest fun personalities. I want to make a

difference in the lives of not only the children in my home but the children all around me. I

decided that becoming an educator was the best way to lift, and inspire the children in the

community around me. I firmly believe that the children in our communities are meant to do

great things. If I can help them on their way that is what I want to do and teaching is the best way

to do that. All around us in our society children are being put last, I get asked all the time why I

choose to have four children and what I was thinking when my Husband and I became foster

parents and decided to adopt a fifth child. My response is that I love children, it is okay to love

children, it is okay to have more than one or two. I believe that we need to teach our children that

they are wanted, and valued. The world as a whole seems to teach them that they are not a

priority which I find ironic as we all started as children, no one was born an adult. If I can help

one child learn to love learning, then I will feel as though my time has been well spent.

Professional Goals

My first goal is to finish school with my Masters degree, I will work hard in order to

finish this degree, part of knowing that you can do something is by doing it. I know it is going to

take many days and nights of study and work to make this happen. I feel it is important to obtain

my Masters Degree because I am hoping it will inspire others to rise to the occasion. Example is

the best Teacher I want to be a great example of higher education.

I want to help change the education system for the better. It has been proven that traditional

classrooms are not the best form of instruction for students. As I use the UDL and develop out of

the box lesson plans I want to keep track of student progress to show how much better student

retain the information, UDL lessons work. I know that it is hard to change the current idea in a

society so I want to show them why it works and allow them to reform their own idea about

education. I will track lessons and results, then publish them for others to read and learn from.

I will learn to engage the students. I want to learn how best to engage the students in

learning. I believe this is going to be a small goal that I have with each class I teach as each class

will have a different dynamic and need a little different form of inspiration. I have combined this

goal with my goal to create universal lesson plans, this is because I believe inspired students are

engaged students.
