Overview of the Lesson
Lesson Summary:
The students will learn about MC Escher and his artwork, the different types of
tessellations and then create their own unique composition.
Massachusetts Framework Standards:

Lesson Objectives:
The students will use their new knowledge of MC Escher and tessellations to
design and create their own unique composition.
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
- Paper - MC Escher PP
- Rulers - Tessellation packets
- Index Cards (2 x2)
Enduring Understandings:
Big Ideas:
- A tessellation is repeating shapes or patterns that cover a surface
without gaps or overlaps.
Concepts:
- There are three types of tessellations Translation, Reflection, and
Rotation.
Essential Questions:
- What are some other images that you see insides or you shape?
- How does MC Escher integrate math and art into is tessellations?

Action/Instructional Procedures

Procedures: For each procedure, list the teacher or student actions (with accommodations and
modifications) as well as the anticipated amount of time it will take to accomplish each task.

Anticipatory Set: (hook)


o The teacher will show the students a PowerPoint that explains who MC Escher is
and shows examples of his work and other tessellations.
o The teacher will do a demonstration on how to create a tessellation.
Draw the lines on the index card, cut them out, tape them to the correct
side, create a 2 by 2 grid on paper and trace index card piece in grid.
The students will receive a packet the shows them how to do all three types of
tessellations (translation, reflection, rotation.)
o The students will choose which type they want to do.
The students will create their tessellation puzzle piece.
The students will draw a 2 by 2 grid on their large paper.
The students will trace their puzzle piece into the grid following the instructions for the
tessellation that they chose.
The students will then have to try and find an image inside of their shape that they
created and add that into their tessellation.
They will go over everything with a thin sharpie.
They will color everything in.
Closure:
o The students will take turns giving a critique of each others art work.
