Professor Research

To get more familiar with my academic discipline Civil and Infrastructure

Engineering, I will research on Prof. Elise Miller-Hooks who is my current professor

of CEIE 601 Infrastructure Modeling in my department. There is some academic

information as follows.

After getting a Bachelors degree of Science in Civil Engineering at Lafayette

College in 1992, Dr. Miller-Hooks got the degree of Master of Science in Engineering

in 1994 and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1997 at University of Texas Austin [1].

So far, Dr. Miller-Hooks has published approximately 76 articles in many top-

level journals such as ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering,

Transportation Research, Transportation Science, and so on [2]. Her academic articles

are mainly about transportation engineering, especially in network optimization,

estimation, and infrastructure modeling [2]. As another important part of Civil

Engineering, transportation includes many significant infrastructures such as roads,

bridges and airports. For example, in her article Optimizing Ridesharing Services for

Airport Access, Dr. Miller-Hooks dealt with a problem of optimally routing and

scheduling airport shuttle vehicles that offer pickup and drop off services to customers

through ridesharing [3]. In the future, I would like to choose a concentration on

transportation engineering, so I should read more academic articles written by Dr.

Miller-Hooks.
Whats more, the research interests of Dr. Miller-Hooks are also about

interdependent infrastructure systems modeling, disaster planning and response, and

optimization and mathematical modeling with applications in transportation which all

are concerning transportation systems engineering [2]. Whether I stay here or return to

China, this is the foundational knowledge in my discipline.

As a professor, Dr. Miller-Hooks taught and did research in several top-level

university, like Duke University, Pennsylvania State University and University of

Maryland [2]. Since 2016, she has been being Bill & Eleanor Hazel Endowed Chair in

Infrastructure Engineering at George Mason University as well as teaching the class

of Civil Infrastructure Systems Modeling which I am taking and Transportation

Systems Engineering which I will take [1]. Besides the position inside the university,

Dr. Miller-Hooks also participates in other academic communities. Previously, she has

been serving as Program Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Civil

Infrastructure Systems Program in the Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing

Innovation (CMMI), Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS), and members of other

academic organizations [2]. Additionally, Dr. Miller-Hooks serves on the editorial

boards of Transportation Science, Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems and

Transportation Research Part B as well as referee for over 40 journals [2]. All these

academic communities are so important in my discipline that many academic articles

and activities come from them, where I can learn much knowledge for my field.
