Safety and Health Plan for Sparrow Dairy

Enterprises

Sparrow Dairy Enterprises: Description

Sparrow dairy enterprises is a family owned dairy based in Troy Idaho.

Running approximately 1000 acres. 300 of this is used in alfalfa hay

production 680 acres in row crops and 20 acres for the dairy site itself. The row

crop is run in a three-year rotation between silage corn, wheat, and barley.

With a thousand cows in addition to heifers. We employ twelve individuals who

help to make our operation run smoothly. Machinery is used on site that is

standard to the industry.

Management Commitment:

Sparrow Dairy Enterprises is dedicated to safety on the dairy and works

very hard to maintain the highest safety regulations feasible. The safety of our
employees is our number one priority making sure that everyone goes home

safe. All accidents that happen on the dairy must be reported to the supervisor

immediately. Machinery that does not have proper safety mechanism should be

reported to the supervisor immediately. Safety rules set in place by the

company must be followed at all times. These rules are established to maintain

the highest level of personal safety and can not be varied from. The goal of this

is to make Sparrow dairy enterprises the safest dairy possible.

Safety Director:

The safety director in places is owner and manager John Sparrow. The

directors responsibilities include developing a safety budget and heading the

safety committee. Other responsibilities include verifying that the dairy is

operating at the industry standard for safety and that safety equipment is up to

date. The safety committee educates the employees about their role in the

safety program.

Safety Rules:

All Rules Must Be Followed At All Times

1. Employees must follow safety rules

2. No roof-housing or other fooling around
3. Injuries must be reported to supervisor, period
4. Chemical may only be handled by trained personel
5. Use PPE when it is necessary
6. Equipment failures must be reported to supervisor
7. Do not remove safety symbols of shields form equipment
8. Report unsafe actions
9. Report unsafe equipment
10. No drug or alcohol use on premise this includes tobacco products

Supervisor Responsibilities:
1. Investigate all accidents that are reported

2. Complete all safety reports on all accidents

3. To maintain supervision over each employee and to make sure that

each employee is trained in all safety procedures.

4. Complete a safety check around Dairy periodically

Crew Meetings

A mandatory monthly safety meeting will be held on the first

Monday of every month. All employees must attend the meetings. These

meetings will outline any changes in the safety plan and how to put them

place with suggestions be asked for to improve any conditions. Incidents

that happen will be discussed and ways to avoid these incidents will be

outlined.

Safety Information Posting

Incoming changes in the safety program will be outlined on the

board with step by step illustrations to remove confusion. The minutes

from the previous meeting will be posted to highlight any changes that

have been created. Areas of concern will be highlighted as a constant

reminder of the improvement process.

Employee Training

All employees will receive a basic safety training on hiring date, this

will be in generic form. After this a more descriptive training will be given

based on which area of the operation the will be working in. These will all

be done in the field in a one on one step by step method, in effort to help

insure clarity and understanding. Employees must understand the

importance of following these procedures, and be free to ask question to

help clarify.

Work Area Inspections:

Regular inspection of the work areas is crucial to maintaining a

safe work environment. Employees will be responsible to complete an

inspection checklist of their individual work area daily. Bi-weekly the

supervisor will complete a entire site checklist.

Areas to be inspected on a daily basis:

1. Make sure all equipment works properly and has proper safety

equipment

2. PPE

3. Individual work area

4. Equipment safety shields and guards and diagrams

5. Make sure area is free of debris that could be harmful

Periodic inspections:
1. Ventilation

2. First aid equipment

3. Building hazards and maintenance issues

4. Chemical and fertilizer storage facility

5.Electrical panels and outlets

6. Fire extinguishers

Safety Committee:

The safety committee consists of the owner and employees from

every field of the operation. They work to make safety the number one

priority. They cover all areas of the operation and have personal insite

that can be taken into account when determining a possible change in

the safety standards.
