Marketing Activities of NGO

'Marketing' was 'Taboo' word for Non Government Organizations few years back.
But now things have changed. Branding and Advertising has became crucial for the
survival of NGOs. Like a necessary evil the 'NGO Marketing' is evolving with the
increase in mushrooming NGOs everywhere in India.

Why Marketing is important?

Marketing becomes important so as to make Donors aware of the good social work
which an NGO is doing for the Society. It helps attract more donations which can
be used for more projects and activities for the beneficiaries.

Marketing also helps to spread awareness about the social cause of the NGO and
hence attract more non-paid basis, self-motivated people to work as Volunteers.

7 Ps of NGO sector:

PRICE: NGOs need 'funds' for implementing their programs, carry out the
projects; there is a cost associated with almost all the activities carried out by an
NGO. Hence the allocation of amount generated through donation is planned for
the cost of execution of projects and vice verse.

PLACE: NGOs operate through their Offices and Centers. They can set-up their
shops/canopy of the products which are made by their beneficiaries like
handicrafts, arts, greetings, drawings etc.

PROMOTION: Promotion is very important and relevant term in Marketing of

NGOs. Direct Marketing, Publicity,Sponsorship, Public relations etc. play vital
role in NGO Marketing.

PRODUCT: Non profit Organization can sell products made by

their beneficiaries to make them self-sufficient and improve their confidence. So
here Product is equivalent to the 'benefits' provided to the target group by NGO.
PHYSICAL EVIDENCE: Donors pay generously. So they expect their money to
be used for the correct purpose and hence 'physical evidence' of the 'use' of this
money helps gain more donations.

PROCESS: There is a process of generating funds from donors and allocating it to

projects which imparts benefits to the community. Hence the process through
which NGOs generate funds from Donor Agencies is crucial in NGOs sector

PEOPLE: NGOs are completely people-oriented Organizations. Non-paid

Volunteers who help on various projects are the most important people involved in
NGOs. Apart from that founders and members of NGO and the employees etc. are
the people who work of the community through NGOs.

At Nivara :

Here there are few activities which are worked upon as a part of marketing
those are as follows

Social Media Marketing

Events and Campaigns
Collaboration with various institute
Fundraising
1. Social Media Marketing

Just like any business house or academic institute, NGOs can also take advantage
of social media to create awareness amongst relevant stakeholders about their
activities.
Every blog post, image, video, or comment you share is a chance for
someone to react, and every reaction could lead to a site visit, and eventually
a conversion. That is posting about NGOs work on these sites help to reach
out to a ton of users. These users can be users who are already aware of its
work or they could also be potentially be new users. These new users are
reached out and made aware of work by posting on these sites.

Giving prompt response gets volunteer to get in touch. If the user has any
feedback regarding its work, volunteering or content social media is an
excellent place for users to get in touch with NGO. Also its prompt action
and active response to these feedbacks are viewable to other users. Hence
they also are made aware of its response to feedback

Social media is also a major plausible cause of traffic generator for NGOs
actual site. When it share blog posts, videos and other content from website,
it give audience a reason to click through and visit site. Once there, NGO
have the opportunity to inspire those visitors to take action by recruiting
volunteers, accepting donations etc

Online content ie Content Marketing helps to connect with the right

audiences. This concept of creating content to engage with your audience is
nothing new, but nowadays it is becoming more important to achieving
online success.
2. Events and Campaigns

This is a part of Public Marketing. NGOs often seek to cultivate public

awareness, support and involvement in their activities. As a result, NGO
public relations tend to engage heavily in relationship-building activities.

With the help of various activities like community outreach programs,

participation in public events or hosting special public functions, NGOs try
to enhance their social capital and distribute the knowledge about their
activities among the society

4. Fundraising

NGOs India has been disseminating information for plans, work, strategies and
implementation of the programmes for NGOs. Funding is the main requirement for
NGOs to implement their plans in social sector. NGOs India has been helping
NGOs for getting funds and grants by various informations, knowledgebase and
disseminating useful resources to enhance and improve programmes and activities.

The main base that donors, grant agencies and funding organisations provide funds
to NGOs are proximity, accountability and flexibility in working with local
communities. NGOs have to demonstrate the viability and enable certain solutions
to extrapolate the strategies to get funds at the local, regional, national and
international level.

The NGO management have to maintain professionalism in the NGO and to build
adequate trust with the sponsors, donors and funding agencies. To create strategy
for funding programmes NGO should start from transparency, accountability and
communication.

Learnings
The major learning is working in NGO is working with less resources yet
managing to get bigger output

Your communications must keep the target audience in mind, and must be
designed accordingly.

Most non-profit organizations design their communications built around

fundraising. However, it is important to keep the overall strategy in mind,
including the self-identity, focus on the target groups/ beneficiaries, and
future plans.

Ensure that an amalgamation of the goals of cross-functional teams takes

place, rather than teams working in silos. It is important to remember that
communication and marketing go hand in hand.

Know what to convey, when and how, and how frequently. Many
organizations develop communication tools, but their efforts remain
inadequate in dissemination, or fade away with time.

Making an emotional content/thought provoking for promotion online and

offline. Social media promotion would help in building a connect with
people. Content includes videos, posters , billboards and un conventional
marketing techniques (based on budget constraints )

Partnering with Well-Known Brands and Influencers is important

Being humble and thankful to the peoples contribution is very important

for any NGO
Conclusion
Non-profits or non-government organizations (NGOs) form the third sector
of the society, as they are institutions and bodies which are neither governmental
nor related to the business sector. They work towards addressing the social
problems which remain largely unaddressed by the state and market, thus become
the voice of the citizens on various platforms.

However, the point to note here is that NGOs are also working in a market, they
are exposed to the various market related factors and externalities. They need
mechanisms to sustain themselves, and many of the organizational and marketing
principles hold good in case of NGOs too.

It is important to learn the fundamental business principles too, in order to

understand their applicability in non-profit context. Non-profits need to reach out
to donors to raise funds for their cause, build linkages and networks to sustain their
functions and grow.
