Teaching Philosophy

Teaching has been a career I have been pursuing since I was a freshman in

high school. Since then I have had the desire to want to make a difference in the

lives of children. This comes in the form of being a good role model for younger

kids. When I look back at the people who have influenced me most in my life I often

think about the teachers I had who impacted me. As a teacher I want my students

to come out of my classroom not only as a better student but also a better all-

around person. I believe the purpose of schools is to give students a purpose for life

and the skills they need to fulfill that purpose. This goes with behavior and content

areas. In order to give the students the behavior skils I have implemented high

expectations for behavior through a PBIS system. In this system the kids are

expected to stay in their seat, keep hands off other kids and respect the privacy of

others. This seems to have worked but can always be improved and I look forward

to being able to implement a system similar to this in my classrooms. Another way I

try to help students is by showing videos that gives them a sense of purpose. The

main topics I have focused on is the good in failure, finding a purpose in life, and

how one person can make such an impact in many peoples lives.

One of my favorite ways to teach is to do the I do, We do, You do. In this

method you start out as a whole group and I will show a couple ways to perform the

problem. Then I have students talk me through the problems and lastly I have them

work on some of the problems at their seat. Their seat work often looks very

different from day to day. One day I might have them pair up and work together and

the next I might have them work on their own. I really like pairing the students up

because it gives them teamwork skills and gives the students another way to learn

the material.
In order to assess the students I often do exit tickets where I can look at what

skills they have accomplished, who has accomplished them and then dig deeper on

who may need to be challenged more or who needs more support. I also use

technology to assess my students growth. I have used technology in the form of

book creator. For the book creator I created a book for the student and as the

student read I recorded their reading. This helped the student with fluency by

hearing what she read and seeing her miscues in reading. Also in the book the

student was able to write an answer to a question that I posed for them. This helped

me assess her understanding of the text and the main points she found in the book.

These are two of the many ways I have assessed students and I look forward to

finding many more ways in the future!
