PROPOSAL
In this proposal I am going to be discussing how and what I am going to be doing when it
comes to creating an album cover and poster for the local band from Manchester. The
pixels are a Manchester based band who has had a reasonably successful career in and
around the local Manchester local music scene for the last five years. They have now
been picked up by and offered a deal by a record company, this is where the opportunity
came for me to create, and design a rage of promotional materials; a logo, A3 poster and
CD cover designed to launch them into a national and possibly international audience
and market place. The Pixels are a mid-20s ages band with 5 members being: 2
guitarists, 1 bassist, a drummer and a singer. The names included are Ben Barlow, Fil
Thorpe-Evans, Dani Washington, Matt West and Sam Bowden. In this proposal, I will focus
on and describe, develops and establishes what concepts, formats, dimension layouts,
content, formats and images I would agree to be suitable within the album art and
poster, which meets the brief/scenario. When it comes to the creation of the cover and
poster this will be recorded in a software diary.

CONCEPTS
The pixels are a pop punk band from Manchester who formed in 2012. I want to keep the
theme of pop punk, use bright colours, and use the songs that are featured on the CD to
influence the look of the poster and CD. I am also doing research on some bands and
there album covers for some inspiration that are of the same genre and these can be
seen below. Of course, I want everything that I do to appeal to the demographic and to
also fit with the band and what they stand for and to make sure that it fits the look that
they are going for. Some of the album covers that I have researched do not necessary fit
the vibe that I want the album to give out. However, I can use them as inspiration on
what I want the final look to be for the A3 poster and the CD.

PROPOSAL BY IZZY MCKENZIE

Wheatus is an American
rock band from
Northport, New York,
formed in 1995. They
are best known for their
2000 single "Teenage
Dirtbag" which was
featured in the movie
Loser, the HBO
miniseries Generation
Kill and most recently as
an acoustic opening for the anti-bully film Bully. Wheatus
was formed by Brendan B. Brown in 1995, on the lower
east side of New York City. Brown began by writing a few
songs, and subsequently enlisted the help of his brother
Peter Brown on drums, Rich Liegey on bass and b acking
vocals and Philip A. Jimenez on various percussion
instruments, keyboards, harmonica, providing samples
and special effects. The band derives its name from the
nickname "wedus" given to the Brown brothers by their
father when they were children. They ma de regular
appearances at a local venue called the Luna Lounge
until 1999 when they hired New York entertainment
attorney Ray Maiello. He helped the group and shopped their self-produced debut album
to major record companies and they soon signed a record deal with Kevin Patrick at
Columbia Records. Maiello was subsequently hired as the band's manager. Their self-
titled debut album was rele ased on August 15, 2000 and spawned the band's first and
largest hit, "Teenage Dirtbag", a song which charted at No. 2 in the United Kingdom.

5 seconds of summer

5 Seconds of Summer are an Australian

pop punk band from Sydney that
formed in 2011. The group were
originally YouTube celebrities, posting
videos of themselves covering songs
from various artists during 2011 and
early 2012. They rose to international
fame while touring with One Direction
on the Take Me Home Tour. The group
have been referred to as a pop punk
band in the media, though the
members reject this description, claiming that they desire to play more music than just
pop punk. In early 2014, the band released "She Looks So Perfect" as its debut single,
which topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The
self-titled debut studio album was released in June 2014, which peaked #1 in 11
countries, and followed by a live album titled LiveSOS. The band released their second
album Sounds Good Feels Good in October 2015 and followed up with the release of a
live / documentary DVD called How Did We End Up Here. On 2 December 2016 the band
announced the release of their b-sides and rarities previously unavailable worldwide
under the title This Is Everything We Ever Said to celebrate their fifth anniversary as a
band.

All of theses bands that I have used are all in the sane
genra as The Pixels and I like the look of all of these
album covers too and they are definalty the look of what I
am going to work towards with the look of the promotanl
matrials for The Pixels and one thing that I have noticed
with this genra is that there are so many different varities
of artwork when it comes to the album artwork.

FORMATS
Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format released in 1982 and co-
developed by Philips and Sony. The format was originally developed to store and play
only sound recordings but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM). Several other
formats were further derived from these, including write-once audio and data storage
(CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), Video Compact Disc (VCD), Super Video Compact Disc
(SVCD), Photo CD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced Music CD. The first commercially
available Audio CD player, the Sony CDP-101, was released October 1982 in Japan.

Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in) and can hold up to about 80
minutes of uncompressed audio or about 700 MiB of data. The Mini CD has various
diameters ranging from 60 to 80 millimetres (2.4 to 3.1 in); they are sometimes used for
CD singles, storing up to 24 minutes of audio, or delivering device drivers.

The format that I will be using is the standard optical disc as this allows me to store 80
minutes of audio as this is going to be plenty of time and I defiantly will not need all that
space. Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in) and can hold up to
about 80 minutes of uncompressed audio or about 700 MiB of data.

DIMENSIONS

PROPOSAL BY IZZY MCKENZIE

Seen as I am going to be
designing an A3 poster
and an album cover I am
going to need to know
the sizes of what it is
that I am going to be
making all of my work.
As this means that when
I am creating my
products, I will know
what size things such as
the writing and also
other images need to be when I am including them. As the last thing I want to do is resize
something and it be too small or too big for me to use. The first graphic that I will be
creating is my album cover. The size of an average album covers 12x12. The
measurements that I will be using is for a standard CD cover. The diagram to the right
shows the measurements and the reason for the back cover being longer is that it also
includes the spine as well as the actual cover itself. I will take 12cm from 15cm, leaving
around 3cm then split this in half-so 1.5cm then I will design two sides of this length.
Therefore, they will be 15x12. Then I will be creating my poster an A3 poster however,
the different sizes for a medium or large poster are 18x24 which is a medium sized
poster, then the large being 24x36. However, I am still going to stick with making my
poster A3.

LENGTH AND NATURE OF CONTENT

Starting with the CD album, I will of course be including the name of the band and the list
of songs that are featured on this album this is of course so people know whom it is by
and what they are listening to. The record label and copy right as these are two very
impotent things that I need to include for legal reasons. A barcode as this is need so that
are people are actually able to by the album. I will also include the social media of the
band on the album cover as this is going to help get them more publicity and hopefully
contribute to the growth of the band and help to get them better known. Of course seen
as it is an album I will be including some album artwork of the band as this is normally
what is going to attract the attention of the album to byers that may not have heard of
the band before and are just looking to pick up an album as if they like the artwork that
are more likely to listen or buy the bands album. Finally, of course I am going to include
the logo of the band on the album as this is going to be a recognisable feature for many
people. Below I am going to include some examples of a bands logo. I will also be
including the same for my poster however, the poster will be more basic that the CD
cover but I will be keeping to the same colours that I have been using for the CD cover.
Again, the poster will include the band name tour dates and locations along with social
media and where you are able to purchase the tickets by keeping the poster basic it
makes it easier for people to read and actually find out the information that they need to

know. Here is the storyboard design for my logo and what I want my final logo to look
like.

CONSIDERATION OF AUDIENCE USAGE

The target audience is mainly aimed at young adults age 20 and upwards. But mainly
anyone who enjoys the genre of pop punk. This is why it is so important to make sure
that my products are fitting with the look and vibe of the music. And also attracted the
target audience.

LAYOUT

DESIGN
CD Cover

The layout of my CD cover is going to be the same as any other CD cover as the front will

have a graphic on it and include the band name/ logo along with the name of the album
as you can see by my example to the left this is what I am going to be aiming for my
cover too look like as this is also what a lot of other album covers look like. Of course, I
do not want the cover to be too busy and make it so that people are unable to read the
band name and the name of the album. My example is very simple however, it is along
the lines of what I am looking to achieve. The back is also going to be very similar as it is
going to include the barcode and recorder label and the list of songs that are featured on

7 |Page

the album. Here is the starboard design of what I want the

front cover of my CD too look like.

A3 Poster

8 |Page
PROPOSAL BY IZZY MCKENZIE

I am going to keep my poster basic as I plan to do with the CD cover. As my poster is just
going to include locations and tour date, the name of the tour/band and when the album
is on sale, website address where you are able to purchase the tickets from along with
the social media of the band. Of course, I am going to be keeping the colours the same of
what I am going to use on my album cover. The examples that I am using below is what I
want my final product too look like. As it also include all of the information that is needed
and considering that it is a band that is from the same genre of what I am doing it is also
I look I want to
go for. Although
as you can see

by the
comparison although they are the same band the posters that they have used have a
different look thought. The last poster is my favourite and going to be what I am going to
be aiming for. Especially when it comes to the look of the poster and theses are prime
examples as they include all of the information needed.

Here is what I am planning to make my poster look like as you can see from what I have
designed on the storyboard however, I have decided to change one thing and that is the
colour of the main writing as I am going to make it white so that it is easier to read this is
stated on my storyboard.

INPUT AND MANIPULATION OF IMAGES

Photo manipulation involves transforming or altering a photograph using various
methods and techniques to achieve desired results. Some photo manipulations are
considered skillful artwork while others are frowned upon as unethical practices,
especially when used to deceive the public, such as that used for political propaganda, or
to make a product or person look better. All of the separate graphics that are not the
background will be separate graphics and will be imported where they are needed of
course for the posted and the CD cover these are completely different sizes I am going to
have to be change the sizes of singular graphics a lot although theses graphics are from
the inter net to make them more bolder and more fitting with the style that I want them
to look like I will be going around them with a black like and also filling in areas to make
them more blocked colours than they originally where and just going over where the
images look pixelated to make them look more crisp

9 |Page
PROPOSAL BY IZZY MCKENZIE

SELECTION OF STYLE AND TONE

The style of my CD cover and poster is animated. However, the images that will feature
on the products will be done as single graphics on Photoshop as this is going to be the
easiest way to make it so that I am able to manipulate a single image and make it the
size that is needed. All of the graphics that I have are going to look very hand done and
cartoonish this is just something I think adds to the style and something I feel is fitting
with the vibe of music that the pixels give off and also the genre is which the music fits
with.

CONSIDERATION OF LIMITATIONS AND ADVANTAGE OF FORMAT

The advantage of the format that I am going to be using is that it allows me to have
around an hour and a half of music. However, with it being a CD this dose mean that
people are only going to be able to listen to the CD where there is a CD player this of
course dose make it limited for when the user is going to be able to listen to the album.
Also people are less likely to buy it because it is an album and not a digital download and
are just trusting on the fact that it needs to be played on a CD player. However although
the CD may be outdated I wanted to include social media to bring the band more up to
date and give the generation that The Pixels are reaching out to a way to keep up to date
with the band.

SCHEDULE & DEADLINES

Here is my ILP this is what I used for the scheduling of this assignment. As you can see
from the screen print below it shows all of the days and sessions I had to complete this
assignment and what it was I needed to do in each session and also what it is that I
actually did in that session. Of course keeping to my deadline is very important as if I
miss a deadline it will have a knock on effect on the rest of my unit and effect how long I

10 | P a g e
PROPOSAL BY IZZY MCKENZIE

have to create all of my graphics. As you can see, the deadline is clearly marked on my
ILP and this is when I will be handing in all of my work.
