FOLCLORE (Folk-lore)

A palavra folclore vem do ingls folk lore: folk quer dizer povo e lore, estudo, conhecimento. Portanto,
folclore o estudo dos costumes e tradies de um povo. Esse termo foi criado pelo arquelogo ingls
William John Thoms (1803 1885), pesquisador da cultura popular europia. Em 22 de agosto de 1846,
ele publicou um artigo com o ttulo Folk-lore, na revista The Athenaeum, propondo a criao do termo.
O termo folclore indica costumes, cerimnias, crenas, romances, arte popular, artesanato e supersties
