NEARPOD LESSON PLAN: LETS FIND THE MISSING ADDEND

Objective:
At the end of this lesson students will be able to accurately find the missing addend and explain
how the addition equation helped them solve the subtraction equation.
Standard(s):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.8: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or
subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
Motivation:
Play Addends and the Sum YouTube Clip
Warm-up: Show students slide with soccer balls, and ask: Are the objects in one whole
group. (Use Nearpod Poll). After reviewing results, ask why students thought objects
were in one group, or why not. Clear up any misconceptions. Then ask, how we can
make a whole group of soccer balls?
Introduce Part-Part Whole Strategy
Before the activity, hide three cars around the room (that can easily be found). Go to slide
that introduces the situation I had 5 cars at my desk, but now I only have 2 cars. I
need to find out how many cars are missing.
Write the subtraction sentence 5-2 =?
Think Aloud: Now I have 2 toy cars and some cars are missing. As I write 2 +? = 5
Ask Students: Why do you think I wrote a question mark instead of a number in the
equation. Students should respond with that is the amount we do not know.
Invite three students to find the cars, one at a time. As the cars are found, tally the number
on the board.
Ask Students: How can we check if we found all the cars? What do we know that will
help us find the missing amount?
Pull up Part, Part Whole Mat Slide and Ask Students: If I had 2 cars and we had to find
some more to get 5, how could I draw this on my mat?
 Explain: This question mark, what we dont know, is my missing addend. Remember,
addends are two parts of a whole.
Body of Lesson:
1) Give students 15 counters and a copy of a part, pat whole mat. Tell students that we are
going to use the part, part whole mat to practice finding the missing addend in a
subtraction sentence. We are going to use addition to help us find it!
2) Say: Lets find out what is 15-4?
3) Use Nearpod Tool to ask students: What addition sentence can we use to help us?
Student response: 4 + ? = 15
4) Tell students: We need to show this on our mat, so what is the first thing we do?
Students will say first we put 15 counters on the whole part of our mat. Next, they will
say they need to take 4 from the whole and place them on one part. Then they will say
that the missing addend is 11.
5) You say: So, if you add 4 and 11 you will have 15 counters. If this is true, what is our
missing addend? Students response is 11. Ask students to use their counters and mat to
solve the addition sentence. After they complete it, pull your mat on the screen up and
compare with students Ask students: What is the missing addend?
6) You say: Lets try another one. Lets say the problem is 12-5 = ? What addition
sentence could help us find the missing addend? Have students respond on Nearpod
Tool (Response should be 5 + ? =12
7) Ask students to use their counters and mat to solve the addition sentence. Ask
students: What is the missing addend? Student response should be 7. Say: If 5+7=12,
then what does 12-5 equal? Student response should be 7.
8) Explain to students that with a Partner you are going to solve a subtraction equation
by fining the missing addend in the related addition sentence (Posted on Slideshow)
9) Students will work with their partner to write the subtraction sentence on the
collaboration tool. Students will also write the addition sentence with the missing addend.
Students must justify their answer to their partner explaining how the addition sentence
helped them solve the subtraction sentence.
10) Say to Students: You will do this last problem on your own. (Pass out large index card)
Write the related addition fact that will help you find the missing addend. Please write a
sentence how you found the missing addend in the equation. (These instruction will also
be posted on the slide)

Evaluation of Lesson (Assessment)

This last question will be used to assess if the student met the objective for the lesson. Students
who could find the missing addend and explain how the addition equation helped them solve for
the subtraction equation are considered successful for meeting this lessons objective. Students
who could not explain or use the addition equation will need extra practice with this strategy to
meet the objective.

Part, Part Whole Work Papers (Enough for Each Student to have 1)
15 Counters Per Student
Adaptations & Modifications:
1) Give student an individual checklist of what to do
2) Partner up a student who may need more help, with another student in the class
3) Give extended time to complete missing addend problems
