Artist to Know
Frida Kahlo, Hispanic/Mexican painter (1907-1954)

Frida Kahlo was well known for her brutally honest self portrait paintings that provided information about her
physical, emotional and psychological state.

Your Self Portrait Project


You will be creating a photo of yourself with various materials, another photo or drawing that you feel contributes
to your definition of self. You will receive the highest amount of points if the photo/drawing is complete and
captures an emotion. If you decide to use an image from the web you MUST:

1. Site your source! This means you need to know the photographers name and include the URL of
where you found the image. This information must be included in the rubric section provided.
2. Only use the photo as 40% or less of your overall design.
3. Not use this final design in any art shows or competitions.
4. Use a good source. Find quality photography instead of clip art/Google image search results.

Technical Requirements
You must use the following tools/techniques in your self-portrait:

- Selection tools to cut out sections of your photo(s)


- At least one facial expression representing an emotion
- Layer Blending
- Collage/Assemblage
- Various materials, elements, and colors
Steps to Take:
1. Make a brainstorming web to explore a few categories of your life. Include lists and sketches.
2. Create 3 thumbnail sketches that merge your face with some of those listed ideas.
3. Take a series of self-portrait photos try different angles so you have some options to work with.
4. Take any other photos or create any other drawings that you want to use in your design.
5. Upload all images to your student space.
6. You will use all of your mad artistic skills to make your two (or more) self-portraits into a cohesive design
that tells the viewer something about yourself.

Self-Portrait Rubric (Gallery Walk)

1) _____________________ 20 Points: Practice


Student must include a chart showing a value scale of the key color in their collage. They must also
have a value scale representing the complementary color to their key color and a skin color
scale. These must all include at least 10 values. Student must also have three sections of collage
practice. This section must include three different types of collage and must be completed neatly.

Student must create a self-portrait collage that is complete and turned in on time.

Student must choose a well thought out composition. This composition should enhance the subject
leaving out distracting and unnecessary objects for the design.

Students choice of collage style must be consistent and enhance their design.

Design must be completed fully and neatly. Students should not have paper showing, all of collage
should be securely attached to the paper, and paper should not be bent.

Applied Design: VTS Self-Portrait Collage Rubric

Objective: Students will observe, report out, and gather emotions represented in images. These images should express
something about the artist, what they value, love, or things they want to do in life. These images are to be organized into a
collage that demonstrates the artists understanding of the design principles of: emphasis, contrast, and repetition.

Criteria:

These images should be highly detailed, brightly colored, with distinct shapes that can be cut away from the background. The
images must be clear and readable so that you can see what the image is, so that you can read it.

Grade standards:

1._____Does the final collage have a strong center of emphasis? 10 pts.

2.._____Did the student reasonably use the design principles? (Other kinds of balance must have teacher approval). 10 pts.

3._____Did the student use repetition of color, shape, line, etc. to unify the parts of the collage? 10 pts.

4._____Does the student have clear contrast in all parts of the collage? 10 pts.

5._____Does the work demonstrate craftsmanship, have neat cutting, neat gluing, all of the parts neatly secured? 10 pts.

6._____Did the student participate in critique and complete critique questions? 10 pts.

7._____How much initiative did the student demonstrate? Did the student use experimentation to try multiple solutions/
compositions before gluing? 10 pts.
