MATERIA Y MATERIALES. PROPIEDADES DE LA MATERIA

What is matter? Anything we can see, touch, taste or smell is matter. Everything
on our planet and in the Universe is made up of matter.

Qu es la materia? Todo lo que podemos ver, tocar, gustar u oler, es materia.

Materials are made up of matter, and we use materials to make things.

Los materiales estn compuestos de materia y nosotros usamos los materiales para
hacer cosas.

Properties of matter: rigid / flexible, resistant / fragile, smooth / rough,

waterproof, absorbent.

Propiedades de la materia: rgido / flexible, resistente / frgil, liso / rugoso, resistente al

agua, absorbente.

MATTER CHANGES CAMBIOS DE LA MATERIA

When matter changes shape, size or state it is called a

physical changes. Cuando la materia cambia de forma,
tamao o estado, se dice que ocurren cambios fsicos.

We can change the state of water: podemos cambiar el

estado del agua:
GAS
(VAPOUR)

Physical changes Heat calentar

LIQUID
Cambios fsicos

SOLID
Freezing enfriar (ICE)

We can bend, twist, press and stretch the materials

applying force. When it happens, the material changes
its shape or size. Podemos doblar, arrugar, apretar y estirar
los materiales aplicndoles fuerza. Cuando esto ocurre, el
material cambia su forma o tamao (pero la materia no
cambia).
 Sometimes matter reacts with air, water and other
elements. These reactions cause the matter to change
into different matter. These reactions are called chemical
changes. Algunas veces, la materia reacciona con el aire, el
agua u otros elementos. Estas reacciones causan que la
materia cambie y se transforme en una materia diferente.
Estas reacciones se llaman cambios qumicos.
Chemical changes
Combustion: something burns and become in ash.

Combustin: algunos materiales se queman llegando a
convertirse en ceniza.

Oxidation: the metal reacts with water and air (oxygen)

and changes into different matter: the rust. Oxidacin: el
metal reacciona con el agua (humedad) y el oxgeno,
transformndose en una materia diferente: el xido.

MIXTURES MEZCLAS

- A mixture is something that contains two or more different materials.

- Una mezcla es algo que contiene dos o ms materiales diferentes.
- Almost everything around us is a mixture.
- Casi todo lo que nos rodea son mezclas.
- In some mixtures we can see the different materials (water and oil); in
other it is impossible to see the different materials (water and sugar).
- En algunas mezclas podemos ver los diferentes materiales que la componen
(agua y aceite); en otras, es imposible ver los materiales que la componen
(agua y azcar).

From plants: cotton, wood. Procedente de las plantas:

From animals: feathers, wool. Procedente de animales:
plumas, lana.
From the ground: slate, iron, crude oil. Procedente del
interior de la tierra: pizarra, hierro, petrleo.
