Lesson Plan

Unit 2: Coming of Age-The Loss of Innocence Length: 90 Minutes Day: 9

Standards: 9.3.1.d-e
o d. Review and revise ideas and development in substantive ways to improve the
depth of ideas and vividness of supporting details
o e. Explain strengths and weaknesses of own writing and the writing of others
using criteria (e.g., checklists, scoring guides)

Learning Target:
o I can evaluate and analyze the writing of my peers and provide helpful feedback. I
can also reflect on the feedback I receive from peers in order to improve my
writing

Success Criteria:
o I will use a peer review checklist to evaluate peer writing based on; structure,
narrative development, and detail/clarity. I will then write a plan for improvement
based on the feedback my peers give me.

Assessments:
o Formative: Peer review worksheets will let students know what they are doing
well and what they need to improve.
The peer review worksheet I created was adapted from a version of Dr.
Pam K. Cokes peer review worksheet

Inquiry Questions:
o How can I improve the structure of my narrative writing?
o How can I improve the narrative development of my writing?
o How can I improve the details and clarity of my narrative writing?
o What feedback is most helpful to peers?
o What is the balance between noting strengths and areas of improvement in peer
reviews?

Differentiation:
o The use of peer review worksheets gives students who are struggling specific
feedback for improvement. It also provides encouragement in areas that are
strong.
This peer review is not focused on formatting or conventions, so students
will be able to focus on the global issues first. This may help prevent
students from being discouraged, because their papers will not be marked
up from spelling and grammar errors. We will visit the more local
revisions later on in the process.

Materials:
o Texts for independent reading
o Writing utensils
o 1st drafts of short stories
o Short story peer review sheet

Procedures:

o 5 Min: Attendance

o 10 Min: Independent reading for pleasure only. (Classroom bookshelf available to

students)

o 45 Min: Short story peer reviewing. (15 Minutes per peer review section)

Students will get in groups of 4 and pass their drafts to the left.

o 10 Min: Peer review feedback reflection (written).

Plan for Improvement: Based on the feedback provided by your peers,

what do you plan on changing about your paper? What will you require to
make those changes effective? What questions do you still have?

o 20 Min: Peer feedback discussion

What areas are we still struggling with?
Which concepts would you like to revisit?
Use papers as examples and modeling
Remind students that 2nd drafts are due on the 28th and final drafts the 29th
