15
8 bottle caps are drill using a power drill or hand drill in the middle with diameter of 5mm. For the axles, 2
steel rods with diameter and length of 270mm is cut with pliers. For the rear wheels, 3 CDs are glued together
with super glue, this is repeated for one more time to make the other wheel. Use duct tape to wrap around the
side of the wheels two times. 2 bottle cap is attached to both sides of the CDs with hot glue. This is repeated to
the other set of CDs. For the front wheels, a 5mm diameter hole is drilled at the center of two jar lid. Then two
bottle cap are hot glued to each side of each of the the jar lids. One steel rod is inserted into the eye hooks to
form the axle. Then insert the axle into the holes made of the bottle caps with the CDs. Then the connection
between the steel rod and holes on the bottle caps are sealed with hot glue. This is repeated with the other sets
of CDs. For the front part, Step 6 is repeated but with the modified jar lids.

3.0 Safety Plan

17
3.0.1 Introduction

There is possibility of an accident may occur when manufacturing of something. So in this case, the accident
will occur when we manufacture our prototype, Mars Rover. A safety plan is prepared so that the designer and
contractor are aware of the hazards. This safety plan will highlight all the hazards that may occur during the
manufacturing of Mars Rover. Accidents are not fully avoidable although safety plan are prepared, so one
needs to be more aware.

3.2 Safety Plan for Stage 1- Design Stage

3.2.1 Cooperation is not given

As this project is a group project, teamwork and cooperation must be given by every member of a team. All
members should be cooperative and the respective work given must be done on time it will cause the other
member to do excessive work and the project cannot be done on time. If non-responsive member occurs in a
team, the other members should discuss with the member about allocating task in meeting or seek for help
from manager to notify and advice the member to have his work done.

3.2.2 Program is not responding/Closing program without saving

Besides, data lost is the likely risk which happens frequently. It is usually caused by closing the program
without saving the work and not responding of the program. Thus, the data and design should be saved once
modification or addition is made in few storages like pen drive and computer as backup.

3.2.3 Insufficient information of design

Furthermore, insufficient information shared in the group might lead to misunderstanding of the whole project.
It is possible to happen as the design is decided by designers, constructors might not understand several part
which will lead the contractors into wrong path. To prevent this risk happens, all members should read
thoroughly the whole design and designers should explain in detail to the contractors.

3.2.4 Residual Risks

Although actions are suggested to be taken in curbing the problems, there might some residual risks like team
member ignore all the advice and leave the work undone, data lost and the backup file is not updated, deviation
of explanation of the project occur. All members should aware to reduce the risk to a lower extend.

3.3 Safety Plan for Stage 3- Construction Stage

3.3.1 Hammering of Nails

During construction of prototype, hammering of nails is an essential process. While hammering, injuries to
fingers or arm may occur. The likelihood of this to happen is unlikely and the severity is minor. To prevent this
from happening, we can use a cardboard to hold the nail by making a hole in the cardboard. The cardboard can
be teared out after the nail is embedded enough.

3.3.2 Drilling of Screws

Secondly, drilling of screws is another key process in construction. Debris may be scattered while drilling and
cuts or serious bleeding may occur. This situation is very possible and the severity is moderate. By using safety
goggles and gloves while drilling, we can prevent debris from injuring our eyes. Other than that, learning the
correct techniques and positioning of drilling is also really important.

3.3.3 Instructions not clearly stated

Not only that, instructions that are poorly written and designed could cause the final product to not be function
able , have many flaws or may not be able to function as intended. This is very likely to happen but the severity
is minor. To stop this from happening, instructions are to be clearly written. Instructions should also be
referred to the photos of the design.

3.4 Safety Plan for Stage 4- Testing Stage

As the prototype must be designed to travel itself for 2 meters, down a slope which not less than 30 degrees
and following this free roll, the prototype will be subject to a vertical drop of 1 meter, there are some hazards
need to be aware.

3.4.1 Prototype with Sharp Edges

During testing the prototype, the prototype with sharp edges may drop to the floor. Due to this, leg will get
injured and cuts or serious bleeding may occur. It is likely to occur and the severity is major. To prevent this
accidents, covered shoes must be wear and stay away from the prototype when testing is ongoing.

3.4.2 Water Bottle Drop Out

Secondly, water bottle may also drop out from the prototype during testing. Leg will also get injured and it
may also cause slippery floor if the water of the bottle flow out. It is possible to happen. To avoid this
accidents, the water bottle must be tie up probably or must be construct well according to the design package.

3.4.3 Prototype Dissembling

There are another hazard that need to be aware about which is prototype may dissembling during testing stage.
This will cause injuries to eye or wounds to body. It is possible to happen during testing. Wear safety glasses
or goggles and safety clothing during testing to avoid this accident to occur.
