Project Girl art challenges media norms
Firefly Coffeehouse hosted a pop
up art exhibit last month about the
negative influences of popular media.
Female middle school students pre-
sented their artwork with Project Girl,
an organization created in 2006 by
visual artist Kelly Parks Snider and
videographer Jane Bartell that con-
fronts the destructive messages young
women face from the media, accord-
ing to a news release.
We share parents and educators
concern that our daughters today are
awash in potentially destructive, often
violent and sexually-charged media
communications that shape their
understanding of how they are valued
in todays society, Snider wrote in
the release.

Because of an error in reporting, a story in last weeks Observ-

missed a no vote from Trustee Jenna Jacobson, mistakenly call-
ing it a unanimous vote.
In addition, the total amount of the deal was somewhat mis-
leading. The agreement includes an $800,000 pay-as-you-go

commitment that will be repaid through increased property taxes
over the course of about 10 years, plus 5 percent interest. The
total amount for that grant is projected to be about $1.2 million.
Thanks to Jacobson for pointing these out.

Barb Schultze, president of the
Madison-based OccuPaws Guide
Dog Association, said the process of
training a guide dog is very chal-

months before theyre ready to help
blind people navigating the world
safely.
To ensure their guide dogs have
calm personalities, OccuPaws only
picks specific breeds like standard
poodles, Labradors and Golden
Retrievers from breeders with clear
health histories going back several
generations. The dogs must even give
up some canine habits to become
certified. For example, as long as
they have a harness on, they are not

Pets age: 12 years
How long have you had your pet: She has been our family dog
for 12 years. She lives at my parents house.
What makes your pet special: CoCo is special because she
knows exactly what someone needs and when. When someone
is sick she is always there to snuggle and comfort them. This
past year she was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer and
underwent surgery. During this time we made sure to give her
the comfort and snuggles that she has given us all these years.
Funny or cute story about your pet: CoCo has figured out
which members of our family are the most likely to give in to
her "puppy dog eyes."No matter how many people are at our
family gatherings for the holidays you can always find CoCo
next to the same two people at the dinner table. Normally CoCo
is not allowed to eat any table scraps, but apparently she has
found the two members of our family who have the softest
heart!
