Parent Involvement Plan

Introduction to School and Students:

Madrone Trail is a Waldorf public charter school for grades K-6. The second grade classroom
consists of approximately 25 seven and eight year old students. All students in this class are
native English speakers as is the teacher.

Objective:
Design a questionnaire for students to bring home and use as a tool to interview their parent(s) or
guardian(s) about their cultural backgrounds and traditions. My objective is to receive 80% of
the surveys back from the families.

Rationale:
Cultural diversity is important for all students to understand. By learning about their own cultural
background, children can learn to embrace and gain a deeper understanding of where they come
from. When a child has an understanding of his/her own culture, he/she is better able to
understand and accept the cultures of others.

Implementation Plan:
Write a questionnaire with questions regarding cultural background and traditions.
Distribute the questionnaire to the students and ask that they use it to interview their
parent or guardian at home within the week.
Ask that students return the completed questionnaire to me the following week.

Measurement Tool:

Parent Questionnaire:

1. Please share one of your favorite family traditions.

2. What was your favorite storybook when you were young?

3. Where did you go to elementary school?

4. Please share a favorite memory from elementary school

5. Where did your parents go to school?

6. What languages were spoken in your home when growing up?

Resources Needed:
25-30 copies of the parent questionnaire to distribute to students.

Assessment Objective Met?

No, the objective was not met. The objective was to have at least 80% of the questionnaires
completed and returned. I was not able to send the questionnaires out to the students so I
received 0 completed questionnaires.

Reflection:
I was really looking forward to having this activity completed by the students in the classroom
where I am doing my practicum hours. However, the teacher in the classroom decided that this
activity did not necessarily fit in with the curriculum and would be difficult for the students to
participate in as they are just learning to read and write.
Had this been my classroom and had I received the completed questionnaires, I would have used
the results as an opener into a discussion about culture and diversity. Also, it would have been
really fun for the kids to share their stories with their classmates.
