INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE
After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and viewing a video on the life cycle of
a butterfly, students will complete a quiz on Quizizz answering at least 4 out of 5 questions
correctly.

and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Indicator: This will be evident when students complete a quiz on Quizizz using iPads or
computers.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, a SMART Board, iPads, computers, paper plates, pasta, glue,
construction paper, scissors and markers will be used in this lesson.
MOTIVATION
The lesson will begin with a read aloud with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar followed by a
video about the life cycle of a butterfly.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. Students will gather around for a read aloud. The teacher will begin reading The Very
Hungry Caterpillar. (Why do you think the caterpillar got a stomachache? What do you
think will happen when the caterpillar breaks out of the cocoon?)
2. After reading the book the class will start a discussion. (What did the caterpillar eat
first? What made the caterpillar feel much better? What did the caterpillar build around
himself? When did the caterpillar come out of the cocoon? Which part comes
3. After a short discussion, the students will watch a video on the life cycle of a butterfly
4. Students will go back to their desk and complete a Quizizz answering 5 questions from
an iPad or computer.

ADAPTATIONS
The student who is an English Language Learner will be provided with a sheet containing visuals
and content specific vocabulary words prior to the lesson.
DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Struggling Students
Students will work on a worksheet to match the life cycles to pictures.
Average Students
Students will work on a fill in the blank worksheet.
Advanced Students
Students will create their own book about the life cycles of a butterfly.
ASSESSMENT
Students will complete a quiz on Quizizz answering at least 4 out of 5 questions correctly.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Following the lesson, students will create a project including the key components of the life
cycle of a butterfly.
Academic Enrichment
Students will work collaboratively to create a big poster to hang up in the classroom representing
the four life cycles of a butterfly.
