Summative Assessment Plan

Found Poetry Project

Objectives:

The Found Poetry Summative Assessment will be a comprehensive, three-part

evaluation of students grasps on the units enduring understandings, including the
value of writing, performance, active listening and inhabiting perspectives different
from ones own. The Summative Assessment will be comprised of three parts: an
Alternate Perspective Journal Entry, construction and performance of a Found Poem,
and a student Self-Assessment about progress made during this unit.

Description of Assessment Task:

This project is derived from Chapter 5 of Steineckes Assessment Live! It begins with
students writing an Alternate Perspective Journal Entry from an alternative
perspective relating to themes presented by a text the students are reading.
Students will be able to choose to respond to a variety of visual media and
corresponding prompts, the visual media acting as what Steinecke refers to as a
strong graphic image.

Students will then search for powerful lines and phrases within their own writing,
and collect images and parts of prose for the construction of a Found Poem. I
would want to make sure the image I was showing was related to the text, so that
students could incorporate ideas from the text in their alternative perspective
journal entries as well. Students will be presented with poetry as examples/mentor
texts so that they will get a sense of what a poem feels like in comparison to prose.
Students Found Poems would be presented to the class in a Found Poetry Slam
Performance on the last day of the unit.

Following the Found Poetry Slam Performance, students will then be asked to
complete a unit Self-Assessment in which they respond to prompts about
Perspective that assess student growth towards the enduring understandings of the
unit.

Steps taken by students to complete the Assessment Task:

Students write, edit and revise their Alternate Perspective Journal Entries
Students look for powerful words or phrases from their journals
Students construct a Found Poem using these powerful words and phrases from
their journal entries
Students will read their found poems aloud to the class in a presentation
Students will complete a Self-Assessment reflecting on the progress they have made
during this unit
What students will be graded on:

Student Alternative Perspective Journal Entries will be evaluated on proficiency

with the use of coordinating conjunctions, or FANBOYS, as instructed in the mini-
lesson, as well as consistency of the use of voicemaking sure that the narrative
and the descriptions in the Alternate Perspective Journal are consistently in
character. Students will be given opportunities for revision with instructor feedback.

During the Found Poetry Slam, students will be evaluated both as Readers of
Poetry and as Audience Members. During the unit, we will have practiced reading
with expression during our Think-Alouds, as well as being active listeners who ask
follow-up questions to engage with readings and discussions.

Self-Assessments will be evaluated on the students ability to write and reflect on

their growth during the Unit. These self-assessments will be supplemented by
student writing responses during warm-ups in class, which will document their initial
impressions and the ways in which their methods of thinking have changed
throughout the unit.

Alternate Perspective Journal Entry
Hello writers! For this assignment, you will be asked to write a NARRATIVE
from the point of view of someone different from yourself. You will choose to
respond to one of the three works of art below as well as their accompanying
prompts, both of which will serve as inspiration for your Alternate Perspective
Journal Entry.

PROMPT #1:

Imagine you are accompanying the

woman in the painting on her
journey. You are both leaving home
for the first time, spreading your
wings and ready to fly to a new
home. Describe your experience
flying high above the world, and your
feelings about embarking on a new
adventure.

Mas All del Universo (Beyond the Universe) by Paula Nicho Cumez

PROMPT #2:
Imagine yourself as Chickadee in this scene: out
hunting and checking rabbit snares with your
twin brother, Makoons, just like we read in the
excerpt from Louise Erdrichs story, Chickadee.
Describe your experience with nature in this
scene, and your excitement from the hunt.

______ First person narration

Is my story told from the perspective of one person, using the
pronouns I and me?

______ A beginning, middle and end

Does my story have a sequence of logical events that take place?

______ Strong description and imagery

Does my story have vivid details and descriptions, which are used to
set the scene?

inspired by Guatemalan and Ojibwe art. Dialogue will follow each

Tasty snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Found Poetry Slam

Greetings poets! For this part of the Found Poem project, you will be asked to
perform your original piece for the class. This means reading your Found
Poem with feeling and emotion, delivering your powerful words to your
peers and captivating your audience. You will be evaluated on incorporating
expression into your poem reading, so this means you will have to rehearse!
Practice in front of family, friends, or even a mirror!

You will also be evaluated on being an active listener and audience

member, which we have been practicing since the beginning of the year.
After each poem performance, there will be a dialogue with the poet where
an audience member will ask a question or contribute a positive comment to
the poet. Each audience member will be responsible for contributing once to
dialogue. Make sure you are listening and can come up with a comment or
question for your poet peers!

REMEMBER! Part of being an active Name:

listener and audience member is being Class Period:
respectful of performances. This means
not talking or being distracting while other students are presenting.
Everyone deserves a chance to share the hard work theyve put in all unit
long!
