SCRIPT

NYK Orion is a container vessel moored at Manila South Pier 3. The said vessel contains highly
flammable and explosive cargo. At 0500H the vessel is now preparing for its departure.

Standing Order: Engine Cadets must check the main engine prior to departure for proper
lubrication and maintenance.

Prior to departure the captain contacts the VTS in the vicinity for assistance.

Captain: VTS Manila, VTS Manila, VTS Manila, this is NYK ORION call sign Three Too Papa
Uniform Sil (3x). How do you read me? Over.

Captain: I need to two tugs to assist my departure. Over.

Captain: Attention accommodation area, Attention accommodation area, this is your captain
speaking we will now commence departure. All crew take your post.

After the announcement the crew took their post

Captain: Forward station and aft station this is the captain. Come in. Over.
3rd Officer: This is forward station standing by for orders. Over.
Captain: Copy that. Over.
2nd Officer: This is Aft station standing by for orders. Over.
Captain: Copy that. Over.
Captain: Aft station please check of the propeller is clear. We commence blowing of engine
shortly. Over.
2nd Officer: Affirmative captain. The propeller is clear you can now blow the engine. Over.
Captain: Copy. 2nd Engineer you can now blow the engine.
2nd Engineer: Copy. Over.

While the engine is being blown, the tugs have arrived.

Captain: Tug Boat on forward how do you read me? Over.


Tug Boat on Forward: I read you four. Over.
Captain: Copy that. Over.
Captain: Tug boat on aft how do you read me? Over.
Tug Boat on Aft: I read you five. Over.
Captain: Copy. Please connect lines on the port bow and port aft. Tugs line. Over.

Captain: Forward station remove the forward head line and the breast line. Over.

After the tugs have successfully pulled the ship form the port.

Captain: Tug boats, stop pulling and secure lines. Over

After that NYK ORION proceeded to its voyage at sea

AT NYK ORION
*The incoming officer arrives in the bridge 15 minutes before his duty and checks the condition
and status of all bridge equipments*
3/M: Good morning sir!
C/M: Good morning to you too.
3/M: Sir, may we do the hand over.
C/M: Of course, as of now the present position of our ship is 14 degrees 56 minutes North and 120
degrees 50 minutes East.
3/M: Okay sir, what is our ETA on our destination?
C/M: The ETA is on 18 September 2016 at 0945H UTC.
3/M: What is our course?
C/M: Our true course is 000 degrees true. The next chart is within 2 hours.
3/M: Copy that sir.
C/M: Both port side and starboard side radars are at 6nm range scale at true motion north-up.
GPS is in operation. Echo sounder is at 20meters range scale. The echo sounder recordings are
reliable. I changed to manual steering at 0700H. Navigational lights are switched off.
3/M: Okay sir, Thank you for the information.
C/M: The log books and record book are completed and signed. The notebook entries will be copied
into the record books after the watch.
Change the paper of the echo sounder. Refill the toner of the echo-sounder.
3/M: Okay sir, noted.

*The 3rd mate took over the watch *
3rd Engineer: Fire! Fire! Fire! There was an explosion and there is a tremendous fire on the Main
engine. Smoke, fumes and fire are present in the site. The main engine was clogged. We are
proceeding to muster station. Over.
OOW: Okay. Inform me after everyone is mustered.
After a few minutes
3rd Engineer: Sir, we are already mustered. We will now prepare for firefighting. We are just
waiting for instructions. Over
After the 3rd Engineer informed the OOW, the OOW informed the Captain about the state of the
ship.
OOW: Captain, the vessel is on fire. The crew are getting ready for firefighting. Waiting for
further instructions, sir. Over
Captain: Okay, what is the condition of the ship? Over
OOW: sir, the ship is experiencing a tremendous fire on the Main engine. Smoke, fumes and fire
are present in the site. Over
Captain: What caused the fire?
OOW: The main engine clogged due to lack of lubrication. Which caused overheat and exploded
Captain: Are there any casualties? Over.
OOW: as of now, there are no casualties sir. Over
Captain: Alright now. Extinguish the fire as soon as possible. Deploy for firefighting. Out

As the captain relays his instructions. The OOW organizes the firefighting team:
OOW: Standby firefighting teams at the forecastle, Chief Officer take charge over.
Chief Officer: Firefighting teams standing by at the forecastle, over.

As the firefighting team assemble in:

Chief Officer: Start firefighting, take team Alfa to site. Follow the route across the starboard side
of the main engine and team Bravo to the port side. Team Alfa create an opening for team Bravo
so that they could take the position after they pass the engine room. Extinguish the fire at the
starboard and cool the part at the port of the main engine. Take additional safety measures and
report all incidents. Over.
2nd Officer: 2nd officer in command of firefighting team Alfa. Carrying out instructions. Over
Chief Engineer: Chief Engineer in command of firefighting team Bravo. Carrying out
instructions. Over

After 30 minutes of firefighting. Team Alfa and Team Bravo was barely holding on to the fire.
The Chief Engineer reported that they require firefighting assistance.
Chief Engineer: Chief, we require firefighting assistance. Over
Chief Officer: Okay, Ill send team Alfa there to help as well. Over
2nd Officer: Negative, we are struggling in our post as well. Call for Mayday chief. Over.
Chief Officer: Okay. I will inform the OOW to call for Mayday. All firefighting team prepare to
retreat. Over.
Chief Engineer: Okay Chief, team Alfa preparing to retreat. Over
2nd Officer: Okay Chief, team Bravo preparing to retreat. Over
3rd Engineer: Fire! Fire! Fire! There was an explosion and there is a tremendous fire on the Main
engine. Smoke, fumes and fire are present in the site. The main engine was clogged. We are
proceeding to muster station. Over.
OOW: Okay. Inform me after everyone is mustered.
After a few minutes
3rd Engineer: Sir, we are already mustered. We will now prepare for firefighting. We are just
waiting for instructions. Over
After the 3rd Engineer informed the OOW, the OOW informed the Captain about the state of the

STI BRONX: Okay we are near in your position. Over.

Minutes have passed, STI BRONX have already approached the position of
NYK ORION for immediate firefighting assistance.

After 30 minutes the fire was completely eliminated when the STI BRONX
worked together with NYK ORION fighting the fire.
