Linear Constant-Coefficient Differential Equations

Solution to Seatwork
Interpretation/Analysis
The performed activity was done at ease. Through the use of MATLAB
it became easy for the students to perform the activity and knowing that the
answers to the differential equations are correct. For the first part of the
activity, it is a must for the user to know the correct auxiliary equation for a
given second order differential equation since it is only the roots of an
auxiliary equation can be solved using the roots command which is needed
to determine the homogeneous solution. The second part deals with finding
the particular solution of the differential equation using different values of
r(t). We manually solved in the beginning and then later on used the
MATLAB commands. In this part, the sym and laplace commands were used
and up to the end of the activity. Using these commands made solving the
equations faster and more accurate than by computing manually. In the fifth
part, the poles and zeroes of the given transfer function was determined.
Using the plot command, the graph for the equation was determined. The
next part involves solving for the inverse laplace transform of some
equations which can be done using partial fractions. Using the residue
command, it will give the pairs of the partial fraction in order for us to get
the right expression then, solving manually we can get the inverse laplace
transform. For the last part, the ilaplace command was used instead of
partial fractions to solve for the inverse laplace. Results show that it was
somehow different compared to the previous part since some of the results
were rounded off or simplified.
Conclusion
Linear Constant-Coefficient Differential Equations can be solved by
direct method through the aid of MATLAB. Results of the activity shows that
it is possible to determine the homogeneous solutions of differential
equations if we know the roots of its auxiliary equation and we know the
cases such as real and distinct or repeating as well as if the roots are
imaginary or a combination of all. It is also proven that one can solve LCCDE
by Laplace Transform Method with the aid of MATLAB since all the results
that I got from using the laplace command are correct. Therefore, using
MATLAB in solving LCCDE is an accurate solver and makes our lives easier
since we dont need to make long manual computation that may lead to
incorrect answers.
