error code (3 digits). measurement mode)
Refer to P. 8-13. Refer to P. 7-2.
Check the displays of [ANGLE ERROR] in the factory mode. They are errors of the E600 and E700 range
and, in the range, you can check the details. (*E600 shows that the gate array on the CPU unit is faulty.
Replace the CPU unit.)
In an error code of 3 digits (in the E600/E700 range), the right-end digit shows a trouble place. (Refer to the
following example.)
Example)
E621: CCD integral time_Low error . . . . . . . .The trouble CCD is "1". H1
E622: CCD integral time_Low error . . . . . . . .The trouble CCD is "2". H2
E623: CCD integral time_Low error . . . . . . . .The trouble CCD is "3". V1
After checking the 3-digit error display, carry out the following procedure. (For example, E622 is explained.)
Example)
1. In the factory mode, obtain and check the CCD set values. (If an abnormal value is input, input a normal
value and make sure that the error is canceled.)
2. Remove the cover and connect the tool to the CPU unit. Check the waveform of the CCD which is proba-
bly a problem unit.
3. By observing the waveform, judge that the problem unit is 1 CCD unit, 2 LED unit, 3 Scale (soil or
damage) or 4 CPU unit. Replace (or clean) the unit.
4. In the factory mode, input the set values again and check the operation.
5. Perform inspection.
Are you

Refer to P. 7-2.
When the MEAS key is pressed in the REM mode while the lens barrel is within 6 from zenith or nadir, this
error is displayed. When this error is displayed under this condition, it does not show a trouble. Be careful.
Refer to P. 7-3.
When any part on the D-OSC unit malfunctions, this error is displayed.
NO
Is the error (E66) displayed?
YES
When an abnormal value is input as the instrument constant (L1/L2/L3) in the factory mode, this error is
displayed. Set the instrument constant again and check if the error disappears.
YES
When the chopper does not operate normally, this error is displayed.
If the tool is connected and the chopper IN/OUT operation is normal, the signal sent from the D-OSC unit
may be faulty. Replace the D-OSC unit.
If the chopper does not operate normally, there is a problem around the chopper of the EDM base unit. If dust
is accumulated and so the chopper is caught, remove dust and check the operation again. If the error is not
canceled yet (that is, the chopper does not operate), the chopper malfunctions. Replace the EDM base unit.
Is there an improper NO
contact place?
YES
YES
YES
This is a communication error between the EDM D-OSC unit and the standard CPU unit.
The problem can occur in the PCBs and the signal route between the PCBs.
As referring to the connection diagrams (P. 10-1 and P. 11-2), check contact or disconnection in the route,
namely, cables, connectors, slip ring, brush, etc. If there is no problem, replace each PCB unit. (On the route,
there is also EDM AMP unit. The problem can also be solved by replacing the AMP unit.)
Refer to P. 13-1.
Is adjustment NO
ended normally?
YES
When the vertical angle zero point is adjusted in the adjustment mode (refer to the instruction manual) and the
following troubles have occurred, the errors in the E70 range are displayed.
E71 : Displayed when adjustment is done in a wrong procedure.
E72 : Displayed when the vertical angle zero point is excessively deviated or when the vertical scale is
installed with an error of 5 or more.
E73 : Displayed when the instrument is not correctly leveled or when there is an error in the tilt offset or
tilt installation position adjustment.
If these errors are displayed frequently in the normal mode, the CPU unit may malfunction.

Is there improper contact or
disconnection?
YES
Replace the problem unit. Replace the CPU unit. Repair the external communication
device (hardware or software).
Refer to P. 7-2.
This is a communication error between the external communication device (PC, FC, etc.) and the instrument
(excluding the file transmission). When repair is done for this error, also check the external communication
device being used by the customer.
Refer to the interface manual (option) for the communication between the external device and instrument.
NO
Is the offset within 2' ?
YES
When you try to input offset of 2' or more in tilt offset adjustment of factory mode, this error is displayed.
Check the offset. If it is beyond 2', the tilt installation position is not correct. Adjust the tilt installation
posture.
NO
Is the error displayed?
YES
Refer to P. 7-2.
When there is a trouble in the non-volatile memory on the CPU unit, this error is displayed. Execute ALL
CLR in EEPROM INIT. of factory mode. If the error is not canceled yet, replace the CPU unit.
* When ALL CLR is executed, the set values of the factory mode, parameter setting, normal mode and
adjustment mode are lost.
If the error code (Angle error) is displayed in the assembled product, there is a problem in the CCD unit, LED
unit or scale.
Each of angular measurement system units will be diagnosed as follows.
1 Preparation
In the factory mode, check if the PWM value and PAT value are within standard. If they are not so, it is
necessary to diagnose the unit. (Refer to P. 9-4 for checking PWM/PAT in the factory mode.)
Remove the left cover.
Check the CCD signal waveforms on the angular measurement PCB. (Refer to P. 10-2 of 10-2 Angular
Measurement Digital System Repairs.)
2 When the PWM value is beyond standard
The scale or CCD is soiled. Clean it.
LED light intensity is faulty. The LED unit (in the horizontal side, angular measurement unit) may be
faulty. Replace it.
3 When the PAT value is beyond standard
The clearance may be faulty between the scale and CCD. Replace the CCD unit (for the horizontal
side, angular measurement unit).
4 When waveform is not proper
1) When the waveform is as Fig. 1
If part of the signal pattern is missing, there may be dust on the CCD surface or scale surface. Blow
dust with air or clean the surface.
* If the problem is not solved, there may be damage on the CCD surface or scale surface. Replace the
unit.

(1) Linearity
30MHz is used for the distance measurement frequency of the instrument. The points for measurement are
different from the models of 15MHz.
Although there are several ways to check the linearity, the following is a simple and sure way.
Point
30cm
As referring to the near distance measurement accuracy items shown on JSIMA102, set points for measure-
ment. The following table shows the example of point. The setting error must be 5 cm.
Use steel tape to measure the distance (reference value) of each point.
Accuracy must be 1 mm.
Measurement
Set up the instrument at the 0 m point, and prepare a check sheet as shown below and record the data for
each point. Record the data for 10 measurements at each point.

Measurement
To measure the reference point, use the EDM and average the values from two or three EDMs.
For long distances, the distance will vary slightly (normally by 10 mm) due to the atmospheric conditions.
Therefore, calibrate the unit once a month.
Note : Also take the PPM correction into account.
APPENDIX2-1 Recharging
Fig. 1 shows how ambient temperature at recharging is related to charging efficiency or how it affects the dis-
charge capacity. As seen from the figure, charging at normal temperature is best, and the efficiency decreases
as the temerature rises. It is best, therefore, to always recharge the battery at normal temperature to obtain full
use of battery capacity and enjoy maximum operation per charge. And the service life of your battery will be
shortened if it is frequently overcharged or recharged at high temperature.
(Note: 0.1C charge means that the battery is recharged with 0.1-time current against its capacity.)

APPENDIX2-2 Discharge
Fig. 2 shows the discharge temperature characteristics. Discharge characteristics at high temperature are the
same as those at normal temperature. The battery is likely to have the reduced discharge capacity as well as
lower discharge voltage when discharged at low temperature. And the service life of your battery will be
shortened if it is greatly overcharged.
