Teaching Philosophy
What does learning mean to me? I believe that learning is the only thing the mind will never feel
exhaustion, fear or regret in pursuing. The ability to learn is an essential life skill and a choice
that a person makes when they wish to improve themselves. As an educator, I want students to
become engaged and understand the materials they have learned to achieve their goals and to
strive for success academically and professionally. I want students to think critically and apply
theories to not only their education, but also their personal life experiences. I want students to be
optimistic, humble, and respectful when interacting and collaborating with fellow classmates and
individuals. In addition, I want students to become enthusiastic with the educational materials
and concepts they have learned and that opportunities await them at the finish line.
Learning should not be all about studying, but rather it should be engaging and fulfilling for
students. To help a students success academically, I will integrate a variety of teaching methods,
techniques and skills because each student learns differently. For example, I will provide in-class
live demonstrations after the lecture or presentation on a specific subject so that students have a
stronger understanding of the subject. I will provide videos and hand-outs with guidelines, tips
and explanations that help further comprehend the materials. I will also create in-class group
activities so that students learn from one another to further improve their learning. I will develop
and establish learning activities that will make students stay focused and intrigued with the topic,
such as group educational games or individual presentations. Thus, by incorporating variety into
teaching methods in my lesson plans, it will help students become more engaged and successful
in school.
It is important for students to understand the concepts and theories from school they learn and
then apply them into their career or practice. To do so, I will provide weekly quizzes that
emphasize the important key concepts and ideas of that weeks lectures. Students will be keeping
a portfolio that summarizes their learning and growth. The portfolio will highlight their
achievements and goals throughout their educational years. It will help them examine their
learning strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I will establish tutoring and advising hours for
students who are having academic difficulties.
Cultural diversity is essential in school because students all gain perspective with it. It is
important that students learn from one another, but first students must have a level of
understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation. I will teach
students about cultural diversity by providing a lecture and later separate students into small
groups where they can learn from one anothers culture and perspective. In addition, I will
encourage students to volunteer at community centers so they can expose themselves to a diverse
group of people of all ages, such as children, adolescents, adults, and elders. By volunteering,
students will become more aware of cultural diversity not only at school but throughout the
world and it will help them succeed in their career.
I will continue my education as an educator because I wish to provide students with the best
possible education in dental hygiene. To improve, I will collaborate with professors in
developing a better teaching lesson plan that will further enhance students learning and strive to
promote productive student interaction. For example, I will incorporate activities from my
graduate program such as leadership skill presentations that students can utilize to flourish and
grow into wonderful leaders and teammates so that their interactions with their colleagues and
peers prove fruitful in improving themselves professionally and personally. Learning is an
essential skill and, as an educator, it is important to continue to grow and improve my teaching
methods in order to serve future students in their academics and also guide them on how to be
outstanding team players.
