has adopted a master plan for Allegany State Park designed to
protect the natural character of the largest wilderness in
western New York and enhance the traditional recreational

For the son of a Mount Jewett woman, helping secure
our nation’s borders against potential threats meant
enduring 12-hour work days, in desert like conditions
where dust and sandstorms were common and the
thermometer soared above 100 every day.
Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Douglas A. Krietemeyer,
son of Vicki Victory of Division St., Mount Jewett, was
recently part of an engineer support mission, where he
helped construct several miles of all-weather border
road along the U.S. and Mexico border east of the San
Luis Port of Entry, south of Yuma, Ariz.
Krietemeyer is an intelligence analyst assigned to
the 458th Engineer Battalion out of Johnstown, Pa.
“I am here to support the border patrol by building
roads and improving accessibility to various parts of the
Arizona border,” said Krietemeyer, who graduated in
2002 from Kane Area High School, Pa.
These support missions are coordinated by Joint
Task Force North, a Department of Defense
organization headquartered at Fort Bliss, in El Paso,
Texas, and are routinely performed by active duty and
reserve component units and individual military assets
from all four military branches of service. The missions
consist of road construction and improvement, border
perimeter lighting installation, border fence
construction, vehicle barrier construction, and mobility
construction. These are long-term operations, planned
one to two years before they begin and can consist of
multiple phase operations that may take several
months or years to complete.
These types of missions are twofold for
Krietemeyer. They provide an opportunity to gain
valuable and unique training experiences in “real-
world” military construction, mission planning,
deployment, execution, and redeployment. They also
help secure our nation’s borders, by helping the mobility
and safety of the Border Patrol’s agents who are on
patrol 24 hours a day, responding to suspected illegal
activities along the border.
“This mission is important because we are actually
assisting in securing our homeland,” said Krietemeyer.
“We serve overseas helping other nations and to get the
chance to help out at home is an honor. The work we
are doing here helps the border patrol secure our
borders by improving response times and has greatly
decreased the number of illegal crossing in this area.”
Besides providing Krietemeyer with training
opportunities, the missions also teach units how to
work in a joint military and civilian environment,
environments that they will encounter on deployments
to Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The desert climate in Arizona lends firsthand
knowledge to the weather conditions that our unit will
be faced with if we deploy to the Middle East,” said
Krietemeyer, who has been in the military for seven
years.
As our nation continues to support the Global War
on Terror in the continental United States, Krietemeyer
and the others can feel proud that they were able to be
an integral part in helping to secure our nation’s
borders to keep our country safe.

BLUEBIRD NESTBOX CAMERA: TAKE TWO
Harrisburg - Following the successful fledging of four
bluebird chicks about two weeks ago, a pair of bluebirds
wasted no time in getting on with a second nest that can be
viewed through a live webcast on the Pennsylvania Game
Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us). The live video
feed from a bluebird nestbox on the grounds of the Game
Commission’s Harrisburg Headquarters can be viewed by
clicking on the “Bluebird Live-Feed” icon under the opening
photo in the center of the homepage.
“It is not uncommon for bluebirds to re-nest after
successfully fledging chicks from a first nest,” said Carl G. Roe,
Game Commission executive director. “We are thrilled to see
that the bluebird pair built a second nest, and already have
begun to lay eggs. Those who continue to check in on this
webcast will be just as pleased to follow along.”
“The best way to get Pennsylvanians - in fact most
Americans - excited about wildlife is to show them what makes
wildlife so irreplaceable and priceless. Last year, we
established a live webcast from this bluebird nesting box to
help us in our efforts to encourage the public to make
backyards friendlier to wildlife. It has been a huge hit, and we
expect that the broadcasting of this year’s continued activities
to be well received.”
Roe noted that the nestbox camera provides the public a
closer look at the entire nesting process of bluebirds. Soon
after the first chicks fledge, the original nesting material was
removed to reduce the chance that any parasites could remain
in the nest box, and to encourage a second nesting effort.
Steps are taken to deter house sparrows - a non-native
species - from using the nestbox by mounting monofilament
fishing line from the roof over the entrance hole, which
compels sparrows to stay away. Bluebird nestboxes placed
close to buildings almost always attract competition from
sparrows, which annually chase native bluebirds from
nestboxes and nesting cavities.
“In the early 1960s, the eastern bluebird was hanging on
for dear life,” said Dan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife
Diversity Section supervisor. “The species was suffering from a
European invasion of house sparrows and European starlings.
Today, it’s not hard to imagine the harm that would come from
releasing starlings and house sparrows in New York City
during the 1800s. But back then, at a time when people were
trying to reverse declining songbird populations, it seemed like
the right thing to do in New York.
“The starling spread quickly across America. Released in
1890 and 1891, starlings were building nests in California by
the 1940s. What our forefathers didn’t expect, in addition to
the rapid range expansion of these alien species, was that they
would almost immediately begin competing with bluebirds and
other beneficial songbirds for cavity nesting sites.”
Bluebirds were enjoying a satisfying existence around
1900. It is when some ornithologists believe Pennsylvania’s
bluebird population was at its largest, because fully two-thirds
of the Commonwealth was farmland. But the runaway
populations of starlings and sparrows would begin to compete
with and ultimately cripple the bluebird’s ability to secure
adequate nesting.
The species’ problems would be further compounded by
farmlands reverting to forestland or being swallowed by
development, the increased use of pesticides, and the
replacement of wooden fence-posts with metal posts.
By 1960, the bottom was ready to fall out, and the Game
Commission and many other conservation agencies and
organizations launched an aggressive campaign to rescue the
species. With the aid of its Howard Nursery, the Game
Commission manufactured inexpensive bluebird nestboxes and
bluebird nestbox kits for the public to place afield. Boy Scouts
and Cub Scouts became involved, as well as 4-H Clubs, schools
and Audubon chapters. Bluebirds became the poster child for
efforts aimed at getting people to do something for wildlife in
their backyards.
“Today, bluebirds are back in a big way, even in the
southeastern counties, where they compete heavily with large
populations of house sparrows,” Brauning said. “It’s fair to say
that our bluebird population is stronger today than it has been
in 50 years. With time and continued assistance from caring
Pennsylvanians, it seems likely bluebirds will continue to
prosper.”

July 30- Gus Macker Deadline! Entry deadlines for teams
interested in this year’s Olean tournament are Fri., July 30 for
applications that are submitted by mail, and Mon., Aug. 2 for
internet entries. The tournament, based on basketball played
in driveways throughout the U.S., will include players who
have no experience to those who have played college and semi-
professional basketball. Primarily based on their age and level
of experience, players will be placed in divisions where they
will be most evenly matched. Depending on the number of
teams placed in a specific division, players and the teams
they’re on will be playing for first-, second- and third trophies.
Also teams that finish last in their divisions could receive
“Toilet bowl” trophies. Tournament dates are August 21, 22.

Summer Reading
The Dog Days are here. It’s hot, Independence Day is well past, and
Labor Day is a long way off. Here are a few books that can alleviate the
summer doldrums:
“Head to Tail Wellness: Western Veterinary Medicine Meets Eastern
Wisdom” by Stacy Fuchino, V.M.D.
Alternative medicine has gotten sidewise looks in the past from vets and
owners alike. It’s fine to go to an acupuncturist yourself, but what good
does it do for a dog or cat? Dr. Stacy Fuchino, who has augmented his
degree in veterinary medicine with studies in Eastern medicine and Feng
Shui, argues that it does a world of good. He presents case studies from
his own practice of pets with chronic illnesses that improved following
treatment with a combination of Western medical treatment and Eastern
practices.
“Cat-echisms: Fundamentals of Feline Faith” by Ellis Weiner & Barbara
Davilman
This is a fine example of the pet-persona genre, which many cat lovers
probably will find endearing. “Cat-echisms,” as the title suggests, bases
its style on the Catholic method of outlining fundamental beliefs and
principles through a question-and-answer series. This is a small book,
short enough to read in one sitting or just to leave on your coffee table.
“Stay” by Allie Larkin
Finally, a bit of fiction to chew on. “Stay” takes a fur-laden twist when
our heroine, Savannah, impulsively buys a puppy off the Internet. (I
won’t go into all the reasons why Internet pet sales are wrong, but the
author does take pains to point out many of them.) If you’ve ever owned

a big dog, you’ll immediately identify with Joe and Savannah’s first day
together. The slobbery wake-up call. The harrying first walk with an
excited canine. The big pile of poo on the carpet. Yes, it’s not your
typical romance novel. But it’s definitely worth a read.
